Cranford (2007)
Whacky and Wonderful
I wish I could give this a 20 instead of just 10. This is the best mini series I've seen in a VERY long time. Cranford is a terrific "bonnet and bustle" period piece. You'd be hard pressed to find a better cast. The actors are perfect for the parts they play and do a superb job.(How could you go wrong with Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench and Imelda Staunton?)The scripts are very cleverly written to reflect the idiosyncrasies of the characters. Cranford has everything: Comedy, farce, drama, pathos and a charming bunch of highly eccentric characters. You'll love these people. You'll laugh with them. You'll cheer them on. You'll hope there's a sequel because you can't bear to part with them. Buy this, it's GREAT!
Doctor Finlay (1993)
I really like this series
This is an excellent series. The actors are well cast and do a great job. The scripts are well written, although the episode endings are occasionally unfinished or hard to understand. The one problem I have with the series is that David Rintoul sometimes plays Doctor Finlay as stiffly as he played Mr. Darcy. He really needs to loosen up a bit. I have a question. Does anyone out there know where I can get a copy of the last episode in season four called "Doctor Finlay Snowbound"? I think it may have been broadcast at a later date that year as a special. It's not included in "Doctor Finlay Days Of Grace" which is the last series available for purchase.
Rosemary & Thyme (2003)
More than just your average "who done it" show
This show is addicting. It's got everything you could possibly want: good scripts; drama; adventure; comedy; top notch guest stars; eccentric characters; beautiful locations; and, great acting.
Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris are terrific together. The chemistry between them is wonderful. You can tell that they really like each other. It's obvious that they're friends on and off screen.
They really work well together sleuthing and gardening. They always manage to land on their feet even though they occasionally go off on the wrong track when trying to solve the crimes. They work well with the police and never seem to be told that they're butting in. Their opinions and theories are respected, most of the time.
In one episode, Laura (Pam Ferris) is not only on the trail of a killer she's on the trail of a scrumptious French pastry she'd eaten while on a school trip decades before. Her obsession with finding this pastry is a great comedic subplot to the actual story. They're on the French Riviera trying to restore a garden and solve a murder, and she's questioning practically everyone she meets about these pastries. Priceless.
You've got to buy this series. It's worth every penny. I love it and I think you will too.
Coupling (2000)
Incredible show!
This show makes Friends look like a grade school production. The scripts are 1000 times better. The actors are 1000 times more talented. The show is absolutely hilarious. They use all different types of techniques to get the story across. There's not just one set. It's true to life. Only the Brits can create a show like this. Hollywood's young talent pool isn't anywhere near as talented as this cast is. You've got to see it! Even my husband roars with laughter!
A Woman of Substance (1984)
loved just about every minute of it
I enjoyed this series from beginning to end. Jenny Seagrove was fantastic as the young Emma Harte. Deborah Kerr was magnificent as the older Emma Harte. It was wonderful seeing her again. Liam Neeson was great as Blackie. This is the story of the fictional Emma Harte, a Yorkshire girl who works her way up from lowly domestic servant to the head of her own mega empire. She outsmarts and outdeals some of the biggest tycoons in the world. She finds love and loses love, but never loses her Yorkshire country values. Unfortunately, she's the mother of a bunch of money hungry, backstabbing children who plot against her. Have no fear, she knows how to outsmart them. I won't reveal the ending. You've got to see it for yourself. It was awesome! The only part of this series that I didn't like was Barry Bostwick's portrayal of Emma's Australian boyfriend, Paul McGill. His accent was virtually non-existant. He should've played a Canadian. He was also a bit whimpy for the part. The role needed someone with more presence and strength. His performance was mediocre at best. I highly recommend this series and it's sequel, Hold The Dream. Rent them. You won't regret it.
