A gem - the best teen comedy since Heathers
18 July 2000
I went into this movie with virtually no preconceptions. Fortunately, as it turns out, as I've barely seen a favorable review anywhere, from the major papers to this message board.

This is an almost perfect movie of its type. Wonderfully written, beautifully shot, intelligently directed, well paced. Every frame has an impact, every frame its reason. The satire is perfectly judged, over the top, but balanced with enough weight to give it impact without pandering to the saccharin melodrama of mainstream Hollywood.

I can see John Waters, to which this has been compared, but the humor is tighter. Visually it has a bit of Tim Burton in there, but has a genuine voice of its own within its indie genre conventions. I can only think of it as a parody of the film that most reviewers seem to have seen.

Add a killer soundtrack and you have a gem: the best and darkest teen comedy since Heathers.
