The Aviator (2004)
Feels just like a biography...
Dull, flat and long ! What's the point of having a 3 hours movie on this guy if there's nothing new or fun that you can bring on the screen... any curiosity, thoughts, philosophy of life, memories, quotes? No.. scorcese an't got such of those things. Is the strict story of this guy's life enough to make you stick on the couch or that cinema chair ? Is the good but cold and frigid performances of Dicaprio and other's enough to make you rent this never ending film ? NO really, believe me! And well, i'd say dOn't waste your time on watching this, go play outdoors, play scrabble or cook something good! Really, maybe it's pure subjectivity here but for me this film was a pain in the...
The Village (2004)
Interesting thematic but failed to deliver..
First the good. Even if it's far from perfect, this movie have something to offer to a lot of fans. And not only horror and sci-fi ones. First, there no doubt you will find some really good tension scenes during the 105 min of the flick length. And I mean really good and well filmed ! Watch for the one when they enter the caves to protect from the 'creatures'. You'll also find a couple of strong performances from solid actors and also a new actress revelation in Brice Howard. And, thirdly, let's also say that there's an really intriguing and mysterious plot that will keep you up awake for a big part of the movie. A story who revealed to be Shyamalan's metaphoric vision on the September 11th and the USA way of life. And he ain't so far from reality with his flick !
The bad about this film is that it's too long and badly rhymed. Some choices made at the pre or post-production have probably ruined the success of a good but 'light' story about an interesting theme. And that, despite some good masterized scenes like i said earlier who made shyamalan technics shines. I personally think that a short film could have been a small 'chef d'oeuvre' while this big Hollywood production will still, in the end , not being considered to deliver for a lot of watchers. The idea you'll get after walking the cinema doors is that something should have been done in the wrong way... not a great dose of fear nor a good amount of fascination for an epic flick !
King Arthur (2004)
War, and war.. war and no weapons of mass destruction evidences !
Can someone tell me again why and who we started this war ?
This movie, fullfiled whith more gore and free bloody scenes than you might need to figure how wars was long time ago before they invented the nuclear bomb, as leaved me perplexed about 'meaning and consequences' of free and unecessary violence in action movies. And let's say that I usally like action movie. But at the end, I was just worried if all that war I saw has a true sense. All that for what ? For the sense of glory ? For the patriotic membership ? Even if the authors awkwardly tried to convince us of the good meanings of all that, we get the impression of a non-inspired script here. This movie also has a reel amateur feel in the camera movements and light arrangements. Despite the long and persitent appearances of the delighfull Keira Knigthley, you'll probably loose your time with this one. Even the usually strong Clive Owen made a bad impression of himself in that bad tasting flick.
Orange County (2002)
Good actors avoiding the black hole....
Banal story, absurd jokes and lame dialogues. The actors seem occupied avoiding the joke in this poor film but do not succeed in masking the large hole which animates it.
Orange County did not even succeed to fill its role of simple entertainment. Frankly, it is to be avoided...
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Yet Another ''As Expected'' Movie
Action packed but disappointing film
One word : action. Yeah there were some in it but unfortunately that was really lacking of fun and originality. Scenes were badly mixed with others, giving the movie a weak rhythm. Worse ! Some of the sequence have been simply missed, coarsely cut by the director. And, not to forget, some of the 3D backgrounds and animation appears so cheap !
On the story side, Tomb Raider is more a ''collage'' of other movies : a lot of Indiana Jones, a bit of Star War and believe it or not, a lot of The Mummy !!! All along till the end, characters will subtly try to tell us what is the secret of the ''Illimunaty'' and what is about the secret triangles but it also doesn't stick. Script is humour-free and characters were lacking of credibility. Angelina Jolie were shining trhought on some of the scenes but she were simply too much highlitted... Movie was all on her ''breast'' and it seem in the end she can't handle it, maybe due to a lack of personality and support from the script.
Traffic (2000)
Well filmed cross-storie movie
After the judge who's in charge of the government fight for drugs finds that his daughter is addicted to drugs, he reconsider his position, having the enemy inside his lines.
This cross-stories movie that make a small ''portrait'' of the drugs market in the USA does not come with expected performance from all the actors but is well filmed and diverting.
