Yeh moh sin sang (1990)
Horror, kung fu, comedy.
Directed by Ricky Lau, who made the 'Mr Vampire' movies and 'Spooky Encounters 2' with Sammo Hung. This offers a mix of slasher film, martial arts action and wacky comedy. Be warned - the opening sequence is VERY violent, and the switches in mood from horror to comedy are not always very smooth.
Moon Lee is cute as a button and her roller-skating fight scene with Yuen Wah is awesome. The action scenes are generally good and the knockdown, drag-out finale is fast and furious.
It's a pretty low-budget movie, but it's packed with cameos, including Yuen Wah, Richard Ng, James Tien, Corey Yuen and Tsui Siu Ming.
Dao (1995)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's supposed to be a remake or update of "The One-armed Swordsman", by Chang Cheh. The ham-fisted direction and crappy fight choreography mean that the fight scenes aren't even worth watching. The script tries desperately hard to seem serious, but is full of cliches like, "And I knew then that nothing would ever be the same again..." or "If only I'd known what a heavy price I would have to pay." Ugh! And who is that girl who plays Sing? Someone find her and have her eliminated!! She's awful. If you like Chinese martial arts movies, you'd be better off with Lau Gar Leung. This stinks.
Josie and the Pussycats (2001)
Goofy and hilarious
This is a terrific and funny film that opened here in England without any promotion, which is a shame because it is great. The humour is very sharp, particularly the spoof boy band Du Jour. Tara Reid is wonderful as Melody, the Pussycat's drummer, displaying a deft comic touch. The film satirises the music industry and the concept of "branding", which seems very timely at the moment, when the charts are dominated by record company created acts who are cross marketed ad nauseum.
Emily's Last Date (1996)
Hilarious.
I saw this movie at a couple of different film festivals, including Film Fest New Haven 1996, and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It is amongst the funniest short films I have seen, the writing is extremely witty, and Emily is a delightful heroine. Very strongly recommended.
Eating Out (1994)
Riotously funny.
Very funny, bizarre movie set in a disgustingly filthy diner. I saw this movie when it was screened at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Extremely inventive and wonderfully performed. The cast are uniformly excellent and the set design is outstanding.
