American Gods (2017)
Addictive, different and amazing series
I was completely hooked when I started watching and had to watch all the episodes before watching anything else. This series is completely a world unto itself. The acting and characters are amazing. There are truly beautiful and magical scenes you will not forget. I cannot claim to fully understand it, but it's got its own internal logic and narrative that propels the story forward. (I had read the book). Would love to see a fourth season. Kudos to those who made this series. It is a unique contribution to the entertainment world.
This Is 40 (2012)
Phenomenal movie
Great complexity of emotion, humor, and wonderment. A really great movie with fantastic acting. I was very dubious about this movie, having heard it did not do well. It vastly exceeded my expectations. The relationship between the two leads is complex and fascinating. Albert Brooks as the father in law is superb. The kids are hilarious. This movie truly resonated with me -- family life can be hard, but it's also very rewarding. This movie will stay with me.
On the Road (2012)
Enjoyed the film. Great performances.
I really liked this movie. I thought the style was miraculous, the acting superb and inspiring. I thought several times: how does one even make a movie like this? How do the actors find the characters they are portraying? It's all so subtle. To me, this movie captured the confusion of youth and the quest for experience.
I noticed the movie completely avoided Dean's hand injury, which is prominent in the book. I guess that was too hard to portray. That hand was a comic element in the book, and I suppose, it is true, that humor is mostly absent from the film. This film has pathos, not humor.
My hats off to the two male leads. They deserve all the kudos in the world, which I think they did not get. That's a tough part about acting. In many respects: this movie is profound, and these actors portrayed that. They will never be sufficiently repaid for what they have accomplished.
