Growing Up Brady (2000)
Hilarious (not in a good way...)
Oh my...this sucker was laughably bad. I grew up with the Bunch on Reruns as did just about everyone else on the planet. Were those kids really that stupid? (I'm afraid the answer was yes...) Were their Parents really thick enough to hook them up with that slimeball manager? Did 'serious thespian' Robert Reed *really* not know what he was getting into with a sitcom directed by Sherwood 'Gilligan's Island' Schwartz? Barry comes off looking like a goffy little doofus (And I'm not sure this was intentional either), and he and Maureen have all the romantic spark of a plate of cold overcooked spaghetti. But, it was fairly true to the facts as I've heard 'em--and is an interesting tale of how a great show can shoot itself in the foot. Watch it just to watch some poor american sod who's way too tall mangle Davy Jones' accent while hitting on Maureen, as Barry glowers in the background. This alone is worth the price of admission!
American Beauty (1999)
Life *is* beautiful.
I really don't have much to add to all of the reviews below. You will laugh. You will cry. You will see characters that look uncomfortably familiar. Even though you know the end of the movie 15 seconds in, the last 15 minutes are the most captivating stretch of film I have ever seen. IMHO--this puppy ranks up there with Citizen Kane and the Godfather. Do not see it if you don't want your assumptions challenged. don't see it if you are intellectually immature. But if you are brave enough--watch this film. It may well change your life.
84 Charing Cross Road (1987)
Beautiful
When I saw Producer: Mel Brooks--I suddenly became very afraid. He's one of my favorite directors--but doing this book??? But then I found out he'd bought the rights as a present for Anne (who adores the book), and I suspect that was where his influence ended. I've read the book and seen the movie, and this movie is a wonderful and faithful adaptation. and no, it's not just for book lovers. go read it, go see it, and your faith in mankind will be just a little greater by the end. this is a well-deserved 10.
P.S. Last time I was in london, 84 Charing cross road was slated to become a touristy pub and grill. the neighborhood association was fighting it, but whether or not they prevailed is an open question. There is a plaque by the door, which the pub and grill people apparently promised to keep up. Hope I didn't spoil your day...
