Finding You (2020)
Expected so much more.
Overstuffed script, nothing really connects. Even the lead actors are too generic to care about. And for a movie set in Ireland, there wasn't much that made me want to get on a plane even after being locked down for well over a year from a pandemic.
Sell This House: San Francisco, CA (2010)
Roger & Tanya come to SF
Irritating homeowners like Edward always strike me so odd. Did you not know what you were signing up for or do you just want to get 15 minutes? This guy has the most obvious dye job is no one to complain about Roger's paint choices. Mus be so rewarding to have it sold by showtime rather than "are expecting an offer any day now" as the show so often ends.
Love Wedding Repeat (2020)
Only because I enjoy Olivia Munn.
This came up as a suggestion on NFlix and I thought I'd try since I enjoy Olivia Munn. And I love Rome. What a waste of both.
Why bother setting this movie in Rome if you're not going to show Rome? And seemingly have no Italian wedding guests worth using other than the groom's family? And did I miss why the wedding crasher is someone with a seat at a table to kick off all the reception hi-jinx? Several usually appealing actors in parts they're not the least bit convincing playing with dreadful dialogue not helping in the least. So much nonsensical stuff going on.
Out There (1997)
Years later, this film still sticks in my head
Over 20 yrs ago at Frameline I saw this 7 minute short and it still plays in my head. I think of it again today because of the tragedy of Notre Dame burning. Such a simple concept, lipsynching to a Disney tune but I loved it and wish it were out there somewhere to share with folks.
Burn the Stage: The Movie (2018)
A movie about a band without a single performance?
Why would you follow "the biggest boy band" on a world tour and yet not film a single song being performed from start to finish? At best we get 20 seconds of songs with the worst sound quality you've ever experienced. And that's not even taking into account the voiceover with the most inane observations ever. The fact that this is currently rated 9.1 stars tells me no one but existing fans have weighed in (and possibly without having seen the movie). Glad I've got that AMC movie club so I didn't even pay $2 to see it. And as for being so popular, why was this "special presentation" in a major US city (with a large Asian population) attended by only about a dozen people? This old man thought he'd go to learn about this band that his nieces probably love. What a waste of time!
Little Italy (2018)
It's no Mystic Pizza
It felt like a retread of Mystic Pizza right down to the "what's in the sauce?!" finish. Director Donald Petrie pays tribute to his earlier self a bit too closely. And Emma is no Julia. Way too full of cliches and failed attempts at humor to recommend.
Boundaries (2018)
Miscast lead but Plummer was fun.
I am a fan of Vera Farmiga usually but this just didn't seem like a fit for her. Never bought her in the frantic role. And I hate contrived road movies...people trapped unnecessarily in a car for a road trip that only occurs for some ridiculous reason. Christopher Plummer, always good, does work in his role. His charm, his age, working with a kid...loved him. The amount of 1 star and 10 star reviews for this is bizarre. It's not that good or that bad. It's about average.
She's Funny That Way (2014)
Hard to believe just how bad this 'comedy' is!
I went in only knowing Aniston and Hahn were starring in it and had switched parts before filming...or some such rumor. My jaw fell as the end credits began rolling and it said Bogdanovich wrote and directed it! Absolutely horrendous! Not funny, not well written, not well directed and not, well, anything. Throughout the film, I just kept thinking "It's like none of these actors have ever attempted comedy before!". And the cast is PACKED with names! I suppose there was thought to be some cache attached to a Bogdanovich project which lured all the stars. There's nothing to spoil so I won't even bother going over the plot of this attempt at farce. Thankful I went during Bargain Matinée time!
Gun Hill Road (2011)
Very different family story!
Super strong directorial debut as well as a standout performance from a fresh young star-to-be. GUN HILL ROAD deals with important and tough issues with impressive impact. Judy Reyes and Esai Morales portray a wonderful set of Latino parents for a troubled teen in New York City played by Harmony Santana. Without giving away any big plot points, this family has a lot on its plate and for the most part they come out on the other end stronger and more together. This film is already the darling of the festival circuit and in a just world, it will end the year with awards and accolades galore. And remember the name HARMONY SANTANA!
Dinner Rush (2000)
I NEVER want to work in a restaurant!
What a fascinating insider view of the NY restaurant scene. I read that the actual eatery used belongs to the director so I know there's a lot of truth there. Great characters all around and a lot of new faces to be on the watch for in the future. Udo, the son and chef, was particularly interesting. Though I didn't have my hunger worked up as much as after BIG NIGHT, it is in the same general category. Fabulous food all around. I want to try that lobster dish!!!
The Mexican (2001)
Acting with your hands again, Brad?
Someone please tie Brad's hands behind his back next time. I think he'll be rendered mute by it though! If it weren't for Brad Pitt, I'd think much higher of this film. As it is, Julia & James are the real reason to see this. I would pay to see Roberts & Gandolfini in something else. That's what I call good old fashioned celluloid chemistry! Sexy without any sex between them. Reteam these two ASAP!
Standing on Fishes (1999)
A PAINFUL 90 Minutes I'll never get back!
What a horrid vanity piece! Went to a sneak preview (in other words it didn't cost me a red cent) and squirmed right from the start. This movie is proof that not everyone can act OR direct (or write). Apparently the stars went to the ACT WITH YOUR HANDS Drama School. And they are awfully proud of their rather average bodies. One hilarious scene had the main character NOT remembering that his grandmother gave him a book of poetry. (Please....what grandmother gives a paperback copy of some little known poet's works to her grandson to whom she is not the least bit close?!) But he did just so happen to recall she had marked a certain poem from which the movie derived its title. Okay....cut them some slack. And the gaffe of seeing the modesty panel in one nude scene when they are discussing moviestar shyness almost seemed to be intentional but after seeing the rest of the movie I would never give this crowd that much credit. I felt bad for Kelsey, Pamela and Jason. How did they get stuck in this pile of doodoo?! And the rubber "private parts"!!! Boy were my sides aching from that over-extended gag! HO HO HO....no wait. I'm lying and trying to search for something positive to say about this movie. Too late. I've already dug its grave. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS FILM!
Big Eden (2000)
A real Festival Find!
YOU MUST HUNT DOWN THIS MOVIE AND SEE IT FOR YOURSELF! I know it already won an audience award at another festival, but after having seen this movie at the San Fran L&G Film Fest on Thursday, I feel safe in saying it will continue to win. When the best feature is awarded on Sunday the 25th of June, BIG EDEN will be the winner. I hope this movie gets wide release. I love it~hear that as Molly Shannon might say it! I want to eventually own this movie. What if Dr Joel on Northern Exposure had been gay....that's the closest I can come to giving you an idea about this movie. The acting is superb, the writing natural and the characters endearing. Cliche as it may be....it will make you laugh/it will make you cry. Even with disruptive projector problems halfway thru the movie, it won people over at my screening. I turned to the guy beside me and said it was already MY favorite in the festival at that point. I was overwhelmed at the ending and was overjoyed that the rest of the theater felt the same way. When was the last 5 minute standing ovation you gave a film and film maker? I felt so incredibly thrilled for that young man. Full house capacity at a huge theater all telling you that you did good work! WOW! Congratulations on a job well done, and that is putting it mildly. You will not be sorry if you see Big Eden! Big Eden is UTOPIA!
