The Last House on Dead End Street (1973)
Wow
First of all I just wanted to say the chances of you finding this at your local Blockbuster are slim to none.
Secondly, this is most definetly the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. The plot concerns a totally unlikeable sleazy pimp fresh out of prison that wants to get even with society by making some snuff films.
The footage itself of the snuff films are horrifying. I don't easily get grossed out by a movie, but I had to turn from the screen once during the totally twisted surgery scene.
The film looks like it was way overexposed so don't even try to get a copy that looks perfect, it was simply made that way. This film is hard to recommend, but if you're looking to be totally creeped out, then by all means track this one down.
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
Outstanding Low-Budget early work from Carpenter
This is definitely one of my favorite all-time movies. Every thing about this movie I liked and would recommend it to anyone.
The story is about a strange, suicidal gang of hoodlums that is ambushing a police station to get to the man that killed one of their members. The reason that the member is killed deals with one of the most shocking scenes I've ever seen and won't dare ruin it for you.
Several times I have read reviews attacking the acting in this movie. I found the acting to be quite good myself, especially Austin Stoker as policeman Ethan Bishop and Darwin Joston as the killer on his way to death row that ends up helping Bishop to fend off the maniacal gang.
The dark, claustrophobic atmosphere featured in this film is just perfect. Carpenter builds up suspense, and makes an already taut situation almost unbearably tense.
Also the theme song itself is enough to send chills up your spine. Pretty much the same beat is repeated over and over, but it's effect is incredible.
Another part of this movie that sets it apart from others is the gang itself. The gang doesn't smirk, laugh hysterically, or constantly spew out stupid one-liners as in so many other movies. The gang has no personality, says extremely little, and just lets their presence itself have the maximum impact.
My rating for this film definite 10 out of 10. Would I recommend it? Yes, to anyone who even remotely enjoys this type of film and even to those who don't.
Junior (1985)
Oh boy this was bad.
This is possibly the worst horror movie I have ever viewed. Basically it concerns two women fresh out of prison who meet an old friend. The pimp/friend/whatever starts beating on one of the women. They escape and steal his car and run off to Florida. Here these two wooden actresses find an abandoned marina, and decide to start a business out of it(?!)They encounter some not-too-friendly locals and a corrupt sheriff who harass them, especially Junior, an idiotic local who kills their dog, takes a chainsaw to their house, and does other things to make life miserable for our heroines. That's about it, with a few pointless nude shots. Don't be fooled by the promising cover, this disaster is unbelievably stupid and boring, and was a waste of the dollar I rented it for.
