City by the Sea (2002)
Another De Niro classic
This movie masterpiece is yet another example of why Robert De Niro is the best actor of our generation. You believe in this person, despite the fact that he's not particularly likable. It's a dark film that takes you into the depth of it's angst. It's also a good example of when Hollywood stops manufacturing plastic fluff and uses well developed characterizations to tell a really gripping story. The depth of sadness is palatable and compelling. No glossy sets, no wannabe starlets:- just brilliant acting, excellent casting, sharp direction and a really good script and storyline. This is what a movie should be. Long after other movies are buried and forgotten this gem will still haunt your thoughts. Well worth spending 2 hours on.
Weeds (2005)
One of the funniest situation comedy/dramas ever
The wit runs brilliantly throughout each episode and has to be seen at least twice to hear the lines missed whilst laughing. Great cast, exceptionally well written and an absolute twist on suburban life as we know it. I doubt Ozzie commercial TV will pick it up as the base for the story will definitely not be appreciated by the more modest masses - which is a pity for it gets my vote as the very best show to come along since, say, "Sex & The City". Relationships develop without ever falling into saccharine mode. And the comedy is not predictable. Well done to the writer and well done to whoever had the forethought to see how wonderful this show truly is. A classic!

WiseGirls (2002)
Wow! What a ride!
Stumbled across this gem on cable. Great casting (Marissa & Mariah are excellent) good visual settings & classy style, excellent editing, camera work & sound, well rounded story & well developed characters. Suspense plus as three young waitresses come to very different conclusions about the different roads their lives are taking each of them.
The film's title says what it means. Perhaps being unemployed is better than working in a beautiful but potentially dangerous environment. Imagine "Married To The Mob" without any humour and you'll begin to see where this movie is taking you. Makes me wonder why or who squashed it's cinema release as it went straight to cable. All around one hell of a ride.
The Beast in the Cellar (1971)
I'm trying to get a copy of "The Beast in The Cellar" aka "The Cellar" (UK) 1971
This film has haunted me for 30 years. I'm trying to buy a PAL format VHS or UK or USA DVD copy. This film is excellent. Flora Robson is disturbingly controlling and the ending, if you haven't been told of it, is sad & very moving. And my home is 90 years old- with a cellar.
