By Jeeves (2001)
More a case of "B(u)y Something Else".....
It stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's main problem is that Jeeves and Wooster are probably the most quintessentially English characters in English literature, and Wooster is here played by an American!
What makes it even more unfortunate is his accent, which is worse than Dick Van Dyke's in `Maori Pawpins'. [sic] His accent crossed the Atlantic more times than Concorde, as he seemed unsure whether he was an Etonian or a Bostonian.
Come on! I mean to say, Gwyneth Paltrow managed an excellent English accent in both `Sliding Doors' and `Shakespeare In Love'.........why, oh why, couldn't John Scherer for just one lousy scene??????!!!!!!
Tomorrow La Scala! (2002)
Patchy but intriguing
I must admit that my reasons for watching this film were rather suspect. It was partly because I have enjoyed seeing Jessica Stevenson in "Spaced", partly that fact it was on BBC2 (my favourite channel!) and partly because I absolutely adore Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd".
The synopsis above sums it all up pretty well without any spoilers, so I won't rehash the plot.
This is a strange film. It raises all kinds of issues regarding the rehabilitation of long term prisoners, but unfortunately it isn't consistent. There is a sense of the director pulling back from some of the issues she is addressing whilst being rather too gung-ho on others, which makes for kind of a bumpy ride. However, it did make me reconsider how I felt about long term prisoners so it obviously did something right.
There is also something rather sweet about the way the prisoners and their visitors come to realise that people are simply people when you get down to basics, and I found the penultimate scene very moving.
Jeffrey (1995)
I just adore this film
I first saw this film on TV, and was gobsmacked (a British expression!) at Patrick Stewart's performance- this is totally unlike anything else I have seen him in.
However, I soon discovered that there many more superb performances in Jeffrey... from the smallest roles (usually played by bigger names than you'd expect!) to the main roles entrusted to Stephen Weber & Michael Weiss. I managed to have a marvelous time just star spotting!
I found this so hilariously funny in some scenes, and yet full of pathos in others that I ended up laughing & crying at the same time. In the end I just had to buy it, so I can watch it as often as I want. Be broadminded, and give this film a go... it won't disappoint.
