Old School (2003)
First Rate Low Brow Humor
If you're looking for anything more than a bunch of good laughs, then don't bother with this movie. The plot is only a vehicle for moving the characters from one comedy skit to the next as quickly as possible. However, it works because this movie almost always succeeds with these skits in making you laugh.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Who's Stuffing the Ballot Box With Votes of "1"?
This movie is certainly not great and maybe not within shouting distance of good, but it is not one of the worst movies of all time. Mike Myers does a fine job of expressing himself through all that make-up and, after a slow start, the story moves at a good pace. The kids in the theater seemed to enjoy it and the adults I was with didn't hate it.
Mr. Deeds (2002)
What an underated movie
Based on the review I wasn't expecting much, but what a pleasant movie. John Turturro deserved an oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his role as the butler who has a thing about feet. Unfortunately, the academy views roles (and movies) like this as too silly to warrant a nomination. Steve Buschemi, in a minor role as crazy eyes, was absolutely hilarious and Adam Sandler was....well, he was Adam Sandler. Even John McEnroe, who I usually find distasteful, was terrific in a perfect role as himself.
It's a totally silly comedy, but do yourself a favor (when you're in the right mood) and watch Mr. Deeds.
Ice Age (2002)
Not bad but I've seen better
This movie has much to recommend it, like the prehistoric squirrel doing battle with his food at the beginning and end. Ray Romano was a good mammonth and Dennis Leary (sounding a lot like George Clooney) was equally good as a sabre-tooth tiger. Maybe I'm just tired of seeing a band of happy animals going off on adventure. I've seen it done better in The Lion King, Shreck, etc.
K-PAX (2001)
Kevin Spacey carries the movie.
It is hard to imagine this movie being successful with out Spacey. He is at once strange and likeable, which is exactly what this part calls for. I appreciated that the movie didn't oversell the alien angle which kept it credible for me.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Jim Carey Makes This Movie Work
Director Ron Howard had a very difficult task in living up to the hype and the fact that the original animated "Grinch" is a true baby boomer classic. Without Jim Carey the movie would have failed. With him it is uneven, but worth seeing. Carey is the only actor capable of projecting a personality through the heavy (and excellent) Grinch make-up.
