Down to Earth (2001)
My personal opinion of the movie
I thought the original story line as told in Heaven Can Wait was much better. I generally like Chris Rock, but this movie just wasn't that interesting, nor that funny. It seems as though made for an audience that doesn't have an intellect. I would suggest avoid it if you can, and if you liked this movie, go rent Heaven Can Wait, an excellent movie.
The Family Man (2000)
A nice movie
I didn't just see this movie once, I saw it TWICE. At first I heard mixed reviews of it and was hesitant to see it. As it turns out the movie isn't that bad. One of the first things that came to my mind were "A Christmas Carol" with Scrooge.
I loved the way the movie opened with Nick and Tea (Jack and Kate) saying goodbye at the airport...of course the viewer knows they aren't going to see each other. We are then brought to the future where Jack is the President of a powerful investment house and Kate is a lawyer doing well on her own. The reason I think of scrooge is that Jack has no concept of family, only of work, he makes his staff come in on Christmas and makes them work Christmas eve. Well it just so happens that on Christmas Eve he meets what one might assume is 'an angel' we don't actually know who he is, and the next morning Jack wakes up in the life he would have had if he hadn't gone to London.
This was my favorite part, as it shows that love can be more valuable than money and real success comes at home, from your family, not from your job and position.
Yes it is a feel good movie, and I guess that is why I liked it, it really made me feel good. Nick Cage is better at action, but I liked to see him in this family style movie.
If you're a "family man" this is a beautiful movie to watch with the wife and kids.
Sunset Strip (2000)
Great Story
The movie starts off with this prologue:
"In Hollywood in 1972 upon Sunset, man The Strip was packed every night. Not with tourists, but Us, the people in the backrooms trying to make it. We were all out there looking for something because we knew that LA was a goldmine and that your life could change in 24hrs and thats why we came here."
The movie takes place within a 24hr period, giving insight into the lives of those trying to "make it". For such a short period, the viewer gets an awful lot of character development. One of the many things that makes this movie good is how one can relate to the characters, the realism. The soundtrack is also really well done, it totally sets the mood for each moment and has a tendancy to carry the viewer to where they are supposed to be.
I found the acting to be believable, and was glad to see some faces I recognized for other movies. I would suggest anyone who is looking for a good movie check this out.
