Starfilm (2017)
"My God, it's full of stars" (Dave Bowman, '2001 A Space Odyssey' novelization)
In fact, to watch this Johann Lurf unique artifact is the closest experience a viewer could feel about entering a monolyth. Before the projection (almost) everything is pitch black, you could barely see a huge rectangle in front of you: that's your monolyth/dimensional door to stars, stars, and even more stars.
And it's quite an experience. A strange one, indeed, but if you are in the right mood and are not allergic to the motto "watch and feel"... then "Star" will reward you with a mesmerizing visual reset.
But it's not for everyone, quite a bunch of viewers could get easily bored: forget the word "plot" because there isn't any... Or even better, improve your own plot. It would work, for sure: the stars conjure a miriad of thoughts, and every single one of them works here.
Never in my life I've seen so many stars in this quantity during this amount of time. "Star" hacked my brain for good.
Rare and unique. I recommend it.
Best wishes, starwatchers! (We're all starwatchers, believe me)
Alberto García-Alix. La línea de sombra (2017)
Outstanding documentary
This is not the typical documentary about the life & work of a great photographer. Sure, many aspects of his life are well explained by himself, and also his work is shown in a splendid way, filling the whole screen on a gorgeous, sumptuous black and white.
But don't expect any encyclopedic approach to García-Alix works. Fortunately.
This documentary talks about life in itself. The photographer talks about small joys, great losses, grief... with a huge amount of sincerity, opening his heart in a poignant way. No tricks here, none at all, only a sincere labour of love from the part of the director. This is the kind of stuff good documentaries are made of. This, I believe it.
And despite the fact that almost all the cinema was full (Kursaal Cinema, 65th San Sebastian International Film Festival) being this a collective experience, I feel as a viewer that the documentary was only addressed to me. I'm sure that the same happened to many, many viewers.
Great artifact, a wonderful showroom for García-Alix's great work and also an in-depth view of his life.
There's darkness, of course, but thanks to the light.
Magical Girl (2014)
Fascinating and disturbing multi-layered experience
(No spoilers in this review, but a couple of ideas who try to illustrate why I've liked this film) Well, despite the fact that many scenes on this film are quite disturbing, viewers could enjoy a demanding and appealing work from Carlos Vermut.
And this is the kind of movie who would let you quite astonished for many reasons. One of these is revealed when you check how violent a scene could be not showing any graphic violence at all, thanks to a wonderful script who works very, very well throughout all the film: this is, indeed, a basic part in Magical Girl, a script designed as a precise swiss machinery. It even works great on many parts who requires a little suspension of disbelief from the part of the viewer. But once you're inside, you remain there.
Magical Girl's power reside on the high complex (but also extremely fluid) multi-layered and interconnected scenes. Quite similar as in Pulp Fiction film (by the way... it would be great to know Tarantino's opinion about Magical Girl).
Also, as it happens on real life, you could witness the huge impact that a "butterfly effect" could provoke. This is very well shown on the film, and it would remain long time on many viewers thoughts.
I really want to know what would be next director's projects, I'm sure that he's going to tune his skills, offering us an interesting filmography.
Go watch it, Magical girl is a well crafted artifact. But beware, as it's NOT intended for young audiences, but adult ones.
Oktober November (2013)
Subtle and powerful, cinema at his best
This film is highly enjoyable as long as it requires a minimum amount of attention, in exchange it offers high levels of (very) good cinema, full of thought-provoking lines which grow inside of the viewer long after watching this subtle and powerful work.
No spoilers at all in this review, only a few guidelines to advice you, My Unknown Cinephile: please don't miss this wonderful exposure of human relationships, melted with many questions about life, the kind of ones we always have been asking to ourselves.
Settled in a mesmerizing Austria, with a top-notch, great actors who achieve the task of offering deep and human acting at his best. I mean, I really care about the characters, they're not mere talking heads, which is an absolute relief.
Of course, I like very much sci-fi movies, also fast paced films with light contents, comedies, et cetera... but such moving films as "Oktober November" are indispensable, unmissable. This is about life, about what the heck we're doing with it.
As only good Philosophy achieves, this splendid work of Götz Spielmann serves to ask very good questions, instead of having any answers.
Hard and tender, and always sincere. It shows us that life is often a great variety of gray, not everything is black or white.
Watch it, rent it, buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks a lot for reading this review/feedback. And don't forget to enjoy life, as much as you can. Best wishes!
Sex-Power (1970)
Interesting film, with beautiful Vangelis soundtrack
An experimental film that explores the different aspects of love (don't get confused about the "Sex" word on movie's title). No real plot, but many assembled sequences which creates an strange (and interesting) atmosphere. To really enjoy the film you should get carried away by his evocative images, echoes of a past that will not return (in that sense the film is truly unique). Diametrically opposed to the actual concept of filming, it was also an unusual film in its time, and today is a gem that should be revisited.
Special mention to the beautiful soundtrack, one of the first great works of Vangelis, where is outlined his future sonic palette. Also the presence of the gorgeous Jane Birkin is very enjoyable too: She looks painfully beautiful.
Well, you should abandon any prejudice to enjoy this film, and of course, even doing that, it will still not be appreciated by many. But believe me, actually there are no films like this one who remember us that cinema is much more than a marketing plan. Enjoy Sex-Power. Thank you very much for reading the review.
