Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
Rory has always been this way
It drives me crazy that there are so many reviews that complain that they aren't being true to the original series, namely Rory's character. I just rewatched the entire series so I could rewatch this latest addition, and I got to say, Rory has always been entitled, whiny, and out of touch. Do we root for her? Yes. Do we think she has moments of sweetness? Yes. But she absolutely is the type of woman who ends up where this series ends up. I love that the series lets us revisits all the nostalgia we love but grounds it in real life; hard as we may try, there are some familial patterns we are doomed to repeat unless we intentionally work to avoid them. Lorelei didn't want Rory to end up how she was raised, but Rory ended up being entitled and having many trappings of her grandparents world. She was unable to discern, like her mom, who was a good romantic partner for her. She was committed to an ideal dream instead of being present and grounded in reality. So she, like many viewers apparently, buy into that she's wise (not the same as intelligent) and sweet and immune to consequences or bad decisions, but Rory is ok with adultery and being used, she's emotional, and she feels so entitled to the life she wants that she never makes the space to make it happen. Now, this may all sound negative, but I actually love where it ends up. She is pregnant by her "Christopher", a irresponsible, childish trust fund kid; it derails her dreams and the hopes her mom had for her (much like Lorelei and Emily). She most likely ends up with her "Luke", rough and tumble, not the safe choice, but so meant for her. And he's going to take care of her even if she's made a huge mess. And where Emily ends up at the end. I cried so many tears. All this is to say...the viewers complaining about this series aren't recalling the heart of the original. This revisit is gold.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (2000)
Doesn't stand the test of time
I discovered this late one night on Cartoon Network in 2003. It became my favourite show. Imagine my delight in 2019 to find it on Adult Swim. I wanted to love it again so bad, but it is terribly misogynistic. I tried to grin and bear it, because I love a good laugh and have a pretty strong constitution for the comedy of white dudes...but it was just too much horror in 15 minutes. Take the Native American character or the African tribesman for example....it's just....ice.
Call the Midwife: Christmas Special (2016)
Order wrong on Netflix, what before season 6 ep 1
Definitely watched all of season 6 and then the Xmas special on Netflix as that was the order and was very confused why they had to go back to Africa - realized after part one that it was all out of order!
Extreme Engagement (2019)
Entertaining but shallow.
I decided to watch this because I grew up loving shows like Lonely Planet and I have a soft spot for *good* reality TV. It's entertaining enough to watch as filler if you are doing chores or don't really need to pay attention deeply. It's a lesson in what NOT to do cross culturally...I spent a large chunk of time being embarrassed. I also found the dialogue and plot points a bit to obvious and scripted versus supposed reality TV. However, it is still really interesting to see different cultures and places and how they treat marriage and love.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Entertaining
I started watching this show with skepticism and took a break after episode 1 because I wasn't drawn in right away. I gave it another go and really enjoyed it. It's a bit over the top in terms of gore and occult imagery (think stereotypes), which I enjoy, and I like it more than the Riverdale-counterpart. I agree with other reviewers that it could tone down some of the aggressive storylines about challenging misogyny and homophobia - I am NOT against challenging those things within a show, they just don't do it super gracefully, it's a little on the nose, so much so that I wonder if they have any core staff who are LGBTQA+. It felt a bit like exploitation to draw in a wider audience. That being said, there's quite a bit diversity in the cast. I really enjoy the actress who plays Sabrina.
Get passed the first episode in both seasons, and you'll be alright!
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
Superb acting, shot wonderfully, boring
I can appreciate that the director may have been trying to highlight Bundy's seemingly "normal" appearance and life and his charisma, but the plot fell flat. While they didn't need to get into gore, they basically skipped the severity of the crimes he committed and how he got away with it/moved from place to place. Having seen the Bundy Tapes, I was expecting more, especially since the acting was SO GOOD. Efron's Bundy was on point. Sadly, it was just really boring to watch and it felt rushed. The last 15 minutes was probably the most compelling part of the film.
