Mencuri Raden Saleh (2022)
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO INDONESIAN FILM GENRE!
Exceeds my expectation!
The story telling (which I consider usually lacking in most Indonesian films) is very good even with the twists and turns. Very good pacing that makes 2,5 hours gone in a flash.
Great characters introduction and development to make the audience invested in them. No character is wasted. The casts clearly put themselves into their characters to give such great performance.
Great cinematography, action choreography and editing that enhance and emphasize the scenes and story. No scene is wasted or draggy.
And I also love the backstory of the painting itself and the philosophy that becomes the theme of the film.
Mencuri Raden Saleh is the best Indonesian film in 2022 so far.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
A VISUAL MASTERPIECE TO COVER POOR WRITING
The 6/10 review that I gave is solely to appreciate the cinematography and CGI of episode 5 which is truly breathtaking especially when compared to the latest epic battle in episode 3. We FINALLY get to see Daenarys on Drogon bringing fire and blood to Kings' Landing. It is what we have been waiting for since the rise of Dany's in Essos right? Well you got to see the real might of a dragon in this episode, all those dragon action scenes in previous seasons were just appetisers.
While it may satisfy some fans who are watching just for the battles, we, the fans who have been following GoT almost a decade ago are disappointed and angered at how bad the scriptwriting for this episode (and the entire season as a matter of fact). The stories are illogical, inconsistent with the character development of past seasons and basically does not make sense.
This episode main theme is Dany's descent into madness which is contradictory to the character build up of Dany.
Dany is known as a survivor. She survived a bullied childhood. She survived her first venture into the outside world (marrying Khal Drogo and embracing the Dothraki life). She survived losing her husband and child. She survived bertrayals. She survived poverty and being powerless. All this we (the audience) witnessed across 8 years. She should be hardened survivor by season 8, full of life experience and suddenly she is supposed to go mad seconds after claiming victory?
And not to mention the butchered ending of Jaime's great redemption story arc which goes from being redeemed back to whatever it is ....
And Arya's story arc - as a very competent assassin to avenge all the enemies in her list, we must believe that she will just forget everything and runs away?
The stupidity of once very sneaky and smart Varys is another let down. He has been downgraded from master of puppet to poor traitor who got caught easily.
Probably the only story arc done right is the Cleganebowl. That is how it is supposed to end.
So overall, this season's writing has been the worst and a disappointment.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
So Who Is The Prince(ss) Who Was Promised?
While I appreciate the efforts of 55 days of shooting in the cold, I don't appreciate the result.
This episode killed so many stories that have been built before:
- So who is the prince(ss) who was promised?
- Why building up how hard Dany got her armies if they were going to be wiped out in seconds? Just to give us audience a SHOCK value? Yes we are shocked. More because of how stupid battle strategy is. We will be okay if the entire army is wiped out under a more believable and logical plot.
- What is the role of Bran? He is made into a useless cripple who warged for no purpose at all.
- What is the purpose of the Night King to wage war against humankind while they have been dormant for thousands of years? just to find 3-eyed-raven? Sorry, do not buy it.
- What Sam, Tyrion and Varys with their vast knowledge were thinking when it was decided for those who could not fight to hide in the crypt full of dead bodies? Did all of them miss the ONE STRENGTH that the Night King and White Walkers are capable of: Rising the dead?
- Why make Jon who is the champion for waging war against the Undead to become such a loser by not be the one killing the Night King?
I can go on and on and on... I do not give a lower star because I am still giving credit to the production effort even though it is literally too dark to see what's going on. I do not buy the excuse that it is called The Long Night. The Lord of The Ring's Battle of Helms Deep is dark but you can still see what's going on.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
A Sad Ending To What Could Have Been The Greatest TV Show Ever
I love Game of Thrones ever since I read the books and I have always thought that D&D and HBO did a fantastic job adapting it to TV series. They are able to capture the essence, the fantasy, the intrigues, the complex characters that made GoT so fascinating. That is.. until they ran out of the source.
Still even without the source they still manage to come up with decent continuation and maintain each player's characters until season 6-7 with Dany's character starting to deviate, but it can still be tolerated since she is now a powerful leader and naturally her characters will evolve.
However I am DEVASTATED with what has so far happened with Season 8. D&D seems to throw logic out the window destroying the story that has been built up and with it assassinating the characters build up that has been built across the first 5 episodes.
D&D and HBO should know about fandom, we dissect each parts, remember every details, search for supporting facts from books and interviews, and obsessed about theories in forums and discussions. So please do not underestimate our intelligence by creating stupid, shortcut story with gaping plot holes.
Season 8 completely destroyed some of the characters, creating utter disbelief amongst us fans. For me they are already dead and I mourn for this injustice to them.
I feel sorry for GRRM for what D&D has done to his masterpiece. What can be claimed as the greatest TV shows ever and be remembered for years to come is now down to Hollywood cliche with shock value that is just that - to shock us.
