William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill (2023)
Such a great surprise!
I have always loved and appreciated William Shatner, and looked forward to this documentary. But both my daughter and I were pleasantly surprised at the format - not quite the regular old documentary one would expect, but better!
Rather, it's an intimate interview with the legend, who is more concerned with the health of our planet, and the legacy we are leaving to our descendants than to a fleeting fame for his roles - none of which beyond Star Trek my daughter knew anything about.
While he is immensely grateful for his career, his outlook on life is quite humbling and deeply introspective, which I feel most celebrities could benefit from. While human and obviously appreciative of his fan-base, he has managed to keep his ego in check and his humor is spot-on!
I thought I knew everything about the man, and yet I learned two things that were a total surprise.
I won't give them away, you'll have to see the film for yourself. But I will say this - at 93, he has it figured out - and I won't give that away either! I am thrilled to have shared this planet with him!
Thanks Bill - and for reference, my 35 year old daughter is a minimal Star Trek Fan, (TOS only), and even less of a Star Wars fan; sci-fi is not her thing. So while she knew very little about you, and only came along to give me company, this film left a lasting impression on her which we are still discussing today! It truly uplifted her!
In closing, if William Shatner humbly suggests that he has not changed the world, I would strongly disagree - as he calls himself simply an entertainer - I can argue that great entertainers are as crucial to our world as are the great scientists and all the rest.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
I'm sad this was cancelled
I read the article about Netflix not liking the many storylines, yet they were setting up some good arcs at the end of Season 2. We'll never see those played out now!
I don't like when Netflix does this right in the middle of a good show. How many other shows out there have a ridiculous amount of storylines and yet keep going? This show had a great cast, good direction, great special effects, and for me, it kept me interested. Thats my benchmark - being entertained by well-done productions.
What else does Netflix want from its shows? Maybe it should ask for the entire storyline and all of its character arcs - through as many seasons as it takes - BEFORE it even agrees to pick it up.
I'm paying more and more all the time to be immersed in other worlds and lives - not to be strung along and then dropped like a bad lover!
Lupin (2021)
Excellent show - a must see!
The trifecta of script, direction and cast is perfectly executed in this wonderful and intriguing show. Omar Sy is captivating but so are all the other players, without whom the dynamics wouldn't be as complex and surprising. (However he does steal every scene!)
Everyone, from the family of Assane Diop to the police, accomplices, enemies, and friends and lovers, is perfectly cast and entirely on their marks.
The locations are beautiful and historically engaging - from the shop interiors to the catacombs underneath Paris to the estates of the wealthy (even if on a set) - it's all lovely.
Perfectly written to keep you on the edge of your seat each and every episode - easy to binge watch. I'm sad just 3 seasons were picked up, but I'm seriously hoping for a 4th and even a 5th. This story line could just keep going.
I enjoy watching foreign films in their native language with English subtitles as I try to pick up a few new words when I can. And the French language is beautiful to hear.
