A fantastic sequel that was worth the wait
17 December 2022
After 13 years, the 2009 billion-dollar hit Avatar has finally gotten its long-awaited sequel. Sequels can be complicated to make. If a film raises curiosity about what could happen next, it makes sense for a sequel to happen. The ending of Avatar fulfills this standard. While most people have been skeptical about Avatar: The Way of Water's potential success, my viewing of the film convinced me that there are plenty of good reasons why it deserves recognition.

While the tone and genre are the same as in the previous movie, the premise is fresh. Avatar: The Way of Water has a fair balance of old and new elements. Even if the concept is familiar, James Cameron applies new themes to tack onto the story and characters.

Prominent themes in the film include family, emigration, racism, and trust. Like the first film, the sequel shows how destructive war can be. However, this film sparks the conversation about invading another nation and the violent tactics used during an invasion. Another message I liked was how it's good for children to guide their parents rather than always just the other way around. Each generation has its differences regarding values and beliefs, which makes it challenging for Jake and Neytiri to trust their children. Fortunately, they learn to build their trust. Cameron manages to take the characters forward with their journeys, both story-wise and with character arcs. Even with characters that died in the previous film, they are not forgotten in the sequel. I was initially skeptical about Miles Quaritch returning after Neytiri killed him at the end of the first film, but I think The Way of Water did a good job handling his resurrection. Well actually, he doesn't entirely return in this film. His memories have been implanted into the body of a Na'vi, which was an exciting concept. New characters like Jake and Neytiri's children were well-written. Spider was a cool and likable character. It was also interesting to see the film expand on the Avatar universe by introducing the Metkayina clan and displaying the beautiful underwater creatures and lifeforms.

The visual effects and cinematography are just as stunning as they were in the first film; they have the potential to earn Oscar nominations. The underwater sequences were both gazing and astonishing. The film has lots of exciting and satisfying action sequences. There were plenty of moments in the movie that were intense and emotional, which were well-made thanks to James Cameron's excellent direction.

While it's sad that James Horner didn't get to compose this film, his replacement Simon Franglen did a fantastic job. I loved The Weeknd's song in the end credits.

In addition to the characters, the performances are excellent, although I'm mixed about Sigourney Weaver playing Kiri. She's the daughter of the late Dr. Grace Augustine, whom Weaver played in the original film, so it makes sense for her to play the role. But still, Weaver is 73. While they could've kept Weaver's facial recognition for motion capture, a younger voice actress would have been more convincing.

The biggest complaint the film is going to receive is its three-hour runtime. A long runtime can only be forgivable if the film uses that time wisely and provides enough content to keep the audience engaged. I believe Avatar: The Way of Water accomplished that. If the storyline and character arcs are essential, the film must take its time. While the beginning was a little rushed, the rest of the film had a good pace.

Overall, Avatar: The Way of Water makes a good sequel, and it was definitely worth the wait. I look forward to the subsequent sequels to witness the continuing journey of our heroes and villains, as well as the expansion of the Avatar universe. The big screen will be the best way to view this film. You can see it in 3D if you want to capture the extraordinary experience; otherwise, Dolby or IMAX are good alternatives. Either way, you'll have a fun experience with this action-packed sci-fi film with excellent storytelling.

Barbarian (2022)

Need some time to grow on me
2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
My friend and I saw this last night. Neither of us had heard of this film, but we wanted to see a horror movie and we saw that the reviews for this film were great. As soon as the movie began, I realized that I had actually seen the trailer for this movie a few months ago. When I saw the trailer, I actually thought the movie looked interesting.

And so the first half of the movie was actually really good. It was everything I expected the movie to show. Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård gave great performances, the scares were thrilling, and I like how the film reflected on Detroit's housing crisis. It's always great when a horror movie has commentary on social issues. The design of monster is also really terrifying.

Unfortunately the second half of the film was slightly ruined for me. As soon as the first half ended, the film's tone quickly shifted from its dark and eerie atmosphere to a more lighter tone. It makes the film's overall tone feel inconsistent, and I can't decide at this point if this is supposed to be a horror movie or a horror comedy. Justin Long's character AJ may have been funny at times, but that's why he doesn't belong in this movie. He's just a comic relief character, which sadly made the movie less scary for me. I will say that AJ's character could work in a horror movie, but I don't think Barbarian is that movie. His laughable dialogue made it difficult for me to take this horror movie seriously. You could remove AJ from this movie entirely and it'll be just as good if not better.

So the purpose of the monster, known as The Mother, is to treat its prisoners like infants. I will say that this disturbing goal is interesting for a horror movie. The only thing I will say is that the unveiling of this goal seemed kinda rushed, mainly since most of the second half was focused on AJ finding the dungeon.

Fortunately, the ending of the film was satisfying, although it felt too short.

So yeah, while this film seems to be getting strong reviews from audiences and critics, I'm kinda mixed. The inconsistent tone was a problem and some scenes could've been written better. While the film could've been worse, it could've been better as well. Maybe I had too many expectations going into this film. It might grow on me overtime. Perhaps a second watch will do.

A perfect example of missed opportunities
6 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've been hyped all week to see this movie, and I think it's safe to say that my hype has ran its course. Before I explore the flaws, I can definitely assure you there are several good things about the movie.

For starters, the visual effects were great, the cinematography was nice in certain shots, and the actors give good performances. I loved Sam Raimi's direction in this film, especially his use of horror elements in certain scenes. The film does have some good themes about changing the ways we live or living a different timeline, and accepting the reality we are given. Danny Elfman's score is really effective and surprisingly impressive. I lost my head when John Krasinski showed up as Mr. Fantastic, something that started out as a fancast and has finally come true. It was also great to see Patrick Stewart return as Professor X...and then to die, again.

Unfortunately, the good parts about this film are all overshadowed by the weak bits. For one thing, Wanda is given a very questionable characterization. Her evil plan doesn't feel very evil, and it comes off as selfish. I get that she's lost her mind and all, but I guarantee that many other Marvel villains would agree that this plan is weak. While there were some good action scenes, the finale battle felt anticlimactic. The very end of the movie is so confusing and it raises so many questions that we have to wait for another movie to answer. Even though the concept of the movie is about exploring the multiverse, there really aren't that many multiverses explored. The film's runtime feels too short for the multiverse concept, and I definitely feel more could've been added.

Overall, I'd recommend the film to people who need a summer popcorn flick. But if you're coming to see the movie with expectations on the MCU's expansion, don't expect most of them (if not all of them) to come true. For me, this film did not live up to its hype, and is nothing compared to the hype of the previous MCU movie.

I enjoyed it but did not meet all my expectations
5 February 2022
I'm currently starting to get into Harry Potter, something I should've done when I was 8. Despite the popularity of the film's, I made a vow that I would never watch them without reading the books first. So I read the first book and enjoyed its movie adaptation. I didn't finish the second book but watched its adaptation anyway. I recently just finished reading Prisoner of Azkaban, which got me excited to watch the movie as I've heard a lot of people say it's the best one. Having watched it, I did enjoy it, but it's complicated.

First of all, I liked the darker tone that the film series is taking. All the actors give great performances. Ron's character in this film is a big improvement from the last two films. John Williams offered plenty of unique and brand-new material while still maintaining the familiar themes of the previous films. The cinematography and visual effects are major step-ups of those in the last two films. And as expected, the film managed to stay faithful to the book. Well, almost. From the beginning to end, there are several elements from the book that are left out. While the previous films did leave out a few bits, they were very tiny portions and pretty much everything else from the books was in them. I get that elements from books are often left out of adaptations so they don't pad the runtime, but length isn't a concern to me. After all, Chamber of Secrets was nearly three hours. Also, there's a major plothole at the end of the film: What happened to Snape? After Harry attacks him, he's never seen again. The biggest issue I had watching this film was the pacing. The film's pacing is too fast. It makes it look rushed. Even though the film is nearly 2 1/2 hours, it felt like 90 minutes.

Overall, I'm glad I got to see this film at least, although I feel that my opinion on it will differ from others. It's enjoyable, but like the previous two films, it isn't perfect. I wasn't disappointed, but I still felt like something was missing. I suppose the film will eventually grow on me. Maybe a second watch will do it. With that said, I look forward to watching Goblet of Fire, after I've read the book of the same title.

Better than Avengers: Endgame
17 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw Homecoming and Far From Home in theaters, I enjoyed them. However, after seeing Far From Home, I began looking back at how Stan Lee had initially written the character of Peter Parker. I began to notice how unfaithful the MCU was being with the characterization of their Peter Parker, unlike previous portrayals from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Now that's not the fault of Tom Holland, who is a great actor. I just wanted Marvel and Sony to take a different direction. With No Way Home, they finally took that direction and made Spider-Man: No Way Home the best installment in the series.

First of all, I'm impressed with the way Marvel handled the return of the original villains from the previous Spider-Man franchises. The action sequences are some of the most epic ones I've seen in both Spider-Man and Marvel films. I'm proud of this film for putting in more emotional depth than the previous films, and it doesn't sacrifice that emotion, unlike most movies in the MCU. Aunt May's death was the film's most moving and emotional scene. Michael Giacchino's score is fantastic, and it's certainly better than the score he did for Homecoming and Far From Home. I also liked how he blended some of his Spider-Man themes with the score he did for Doctor Strange. The cinematography is the best out of every Spider-Man film (including the Raimi and Webb installments). The film's tone starts light and goes darker as the film progresses, and it manages to blend well together.

Now here comes the big spoilers. First of all, we finally got to see Charlie Cox reprise his role as Daredevil. While I was hoping to see more of him in the film, I was satisfied with what he did. The post-credits scene with Tom Hardy's Venom was excellent; however, it was short-lived as he quickly returned to his universe. But then again, he accidentally leaves behind a piece of Venom, which makes it possible for a Venom storyline in the MCU. And finally, I can confirm that we got the moment we've all been waiting for: the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. It was fun to see the two interact with Tom Holland's Peter, especially the scene where they are creating formulas at Midtown High. But most of all, they get good character development, like when Andrew's Peter saved MJ after failing to save Gwen, and Tobey's Peter stopped Tom's Peter from impaling Norman Osborn, which caused his best friend Harry to become a villain. Let's not forget about Tom Holland's character. After being disappointed with his character in the last two films, Tom's Peter Parker finally gets some of the best character development I've seen in a Marvel movie. Other characters that get good development include MJ, Ned, and even Aunt May. Most importantly, we get the famous Spider-Man motive we all know and remember: With great power comes great responsibility.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is packed with emotion, character, and the most epic moments of the MCU that will have the cinema going berserk and bringing down the house. It made me want to give a second chance to a character I had nearly lost faith in. Marvel succeeded in restoring that faith. The last scene of Peter swinging through New York in his new suit is a very satisfying ending. After losing my confidence in Tom Holland's character, I can say Tom Holland's Peter Parker has finally earned his place in the MCU, and I'm hoping he's able to continue the role with another trilogy. Spider-Man: No Way Home is, without doubt, a movie you do not want to miss on the big screen.

Eternals (2021)

Eternals could be less complicated if it wasn't part of Marvel
5 November 2021
I can understand why critics are treating Eternals a bit too harshly. Eternals is very different from all the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, at the same time, it attempts to maintain the basic structure of its other recent films. The critics expected to see a basic Marvel movie, but they did not meet their full expectations. That makes Eternals difficult to please most Marvel fans. However, I can praise the film for a couple of things. The acting is good and I'm proud of Marvel for having diversity in its cast. The film score is gorgeous and doesn't sound like any other Marvel scores. The cinematography is excellent in many shots; however, a few shots in the movie involved using a green screen, and the cinematography didn't blend well with it. Another problem with the film is that most of the characterization is weak. Kit Harington's character is the most pointless of all characters in the film as he only appears for a few minutes at the beginning of the film and isn't seen again until the end. The post-credits scene showcases some information about his character that will be explored at some point in the MCU, but it felt like something that could've been saved for another movie. Despite being the biggest celebrity in the film, Angelina Jolie also didn't get enough screen time or character development. The screenplay is probably the most flawed screenplay of all MCU movies. It has too much exposition; the characters explain too much information instead of letting the movie show. I get that the film needed some explanations since many people are unfamiliar with the Eternals, but it could've been executed much better. There's also a lot of flashbacks in the film, most parts of which serve as filler. While it does help us learn more about the characters, there were still some bits that could've been cut. In fact, most of this film seems like it tried to cram so much about the Eternals into one movie instead of giving it all to us by dividing it into thirds like most Marvel trilogies. If that doesn't make sense to you, imagine for a minute that Marvel never existed, but suddenly a movie called Avengers: Infinity War comes out. That's exactly what Eternals feels like. I know Tony Stark once said, "Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk," but that does not apply to the process of creating a movie franchise. With that said, Eternals is going to be challenging to build a trilogy upon. The end of this film does tease a sequel, but I can picture this planned series going down the path of the Divergent films. In other words, I find it hard to imagine the sequel(s) maintaining its audience. I would like to see the Eternals as a team appear in future Marvel movies, but if we're giving them their own movies, they'll have to take a different direction to stay consistent.

One of the top 10 best Marvel movies
8 September 2021
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is very different from all previous Marvel movies, which is a good thing. I was a little worried at first that the film might not live up to the success Marvel pushed to give, but the film was actually spectacular and very entertaining. Good story, good acting, excellent character development, the action and choreography are outstanding, some funny moments, beautiful cinematography, and the VFX are a major step-up from previous Marvel films. This film was almost like the Aquaman of the MCU because it was a fun experience seeing it on the screen and presenting fans with something entirely new and unfamiliar. This movie is practically flawless. Can't wait to see Shang-Chi in future Marvel movies.

Every Witch Way: Discovery (2014)
Season 1, Episode 1

WTF is this?
27 May 2021
I'm astonished at how awful this show looks. Having watched this episode, I have no interest in watching the show any further. The pacing is too fast, the acting is god-awful, the writing is terrible and is filled with too many cliches. The characters are given absolutely no time to develop. The show was obviously given a very low budget because the production values look like it was made for a high school film class. The show appears to have no flow because the scenes are all over the place to the point where I don't even understand what is happening in the show. Every Witch Way can be considered as one of the leading factors that lead to Nickelodeon's downfall.

Kids will like it
17 March 2021
I saw this movie when I was 9. As a born-American with British parents, I had watched the cartoon and read some of the books. When I saw this movie, I liked it. Obviously when I look back at this movie now, there's a lot of gross humor which doesn't typically hold up with me as an adult. So this movie might actually be good for kids who are fans of the Horrid Henry franchise, but it might not be fit for everyone else.

Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007 Video Game)

I avoided this game as a kid
3 March 2021
As a kid, I was a fan of Alvin and the Chipmunks. When my parents got my sister and I a Wii for Christmas back in 2008, they got us three separate games with it. They got this game for me to play because I was a fan of the movie at the time so they figured I'd enjoy it. Unfortunately, I didn't have any fun at all with this crappy game. It was so confusing I couldn't last a minute with a song. Not even the tutorial game helped. The graphics are god awful and the songs are annoying as hell. I never played this game again after my second play.

Power Rangers (2017)
3/10
Not the ideally Power Rangers movie any fan would want
3 March 2021
The majority of this Power Rangers movie is just some teen angst drama. Now I have nothing against teen angst being portrayed in film and TV. But we're talking about a Power Rangers movie. This movie tries too hard to be serious and mature. There's humor every once in a while, but it doesn't fit with the serious tone. And while we're on the subject of seriousness, the color palette used in this film is very dull. It's the same washed-out color palette used in Man of Steel and Fantastic Four, which has been used in so many movies, and it's completely outdated.

The script is quite bland with several pop-culture references. Some of the dialogue can be inappropriate for the kids that watch this film.

The acting is okay, but the characters have feeble character development and can be very unlikeable. The most likable characters I can think of are Jason and Billy. Other than that, there's not a lot of characterization for the heroes of this movie. I wouldn't consider them fit to be role models. The Rangers don't have strong chemistry with each other. In the original TV show, they were already friends before becoming the Power Rangers. In this film, since they're only meeting each other for the first time, they fail to build a connection and understand each other. Even Zordon can be seen as unlikeable. In this film, he can sound irritable, whereas Zordon in the original show was more optimistic.

Some aspects in this film are just stolen from The Breakfast Club. I'm not saying that because the film opens with a detention scene. There's way more than that. For starters, the Power Rangers all follow the same character traits as the main characters in The Breakfast Club: The Nerd (Billy), the Jock (Jason), the Outcast (Trini), the Princess (Kimberly), and the Rebel (Zack). The campfire scene where the Power Rangers reveal bits about themselves is similar to The Breakfast Club's circle confession.

One of the BIGGEST issues I have with this film is the mass product placement from Krispy Kreme. My god, it's everywhere between the middle and end of the film. The final battle literally takes place at a local Krispy Kreme.

Speaking of the final battle, it's the ONLY fight scene in this 2-hour movie. If you were expecting this movie to be packed with fighting sequences, get ready to be disappointed.

So yeah, I wasn't entirely pleased with this film. It doesn't have much replay value, and I wouldn't recommend this film to kids. I liked the visual effects and the soundtrack, but yeah, that's about it. This film was just very uninteresting. Hopefully, the next reboot does something much better.

Animal Crossing: City Folk (2008 Video Game)
10/10
This game was a big part of my childhood
3 March 2021
My sister got a Wii for Christmas back in 2008. Before then, I had only played it once at my cousin's apartment. Along with this Wii, my parents bought three separate games, including this game. The other games were Cooking Mama: Cook Off and the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie game (I was a fan of the movie at the time, but the game was straight terrible). Anyway, my sister created her town in the game which I observed and seemed interested in. Some months later I decided to give the game a try. It took me a while to actually understand what I was supposed to do, but as soon as I did, I became obsessed with this game. And to this day, Animal Crossing: City Folk is my favorite Wii game and one of my all-time favorite video games. Playing this game lead me to playing all the other games in the franchise. I used to wake up early in the morning just to play this game. Nowadays, whenever I plug my Wii back into my TV and put this game on, I'm taken back to a simpler and care-free time. I can say the same thing about the GameCube and DS games, but City Folk will always be the game that contributed to those good times.

One of the most underrated Marvel movies
3 March 2021
This movie isn't brought up much when people talk about the MCU. It does a great job for a historical fiction war movie and it stays very faithful to its source material. The score is a major improvement from all the other MCU movies that were out at the time of TFA's release. The performances are great and we get plenty of character development. Steve and Peggy have great chemistry, and Red Skull is a very good villain. The First Avenger deals with themes of sacrifice and sends a positive message that size doesn't define who you are, but rather your attributes.

The perfect Superman movie for all fans of all ages

To this day, this is the most faithful Superman movie that has yet to be surpassed. Its story is very well-written with brilliant performances from Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman. We also get one of John Williams' most iconic scores and one of the most recognizable scores in film history. With plenty of action sequences and emotional moments, this is the perfect Superman movie that anyone whose a fan of Superman, both young and old, will love.

Death Note (I) (2017)
1/10
Far from rewatchable
2 March 2021
I saw the original Death Note anime before I watched this film, and I consider it to be the best anime ever. This live-action film however is an absolute dumpster fire. Now usually a movie adaptation of a Japanese anime doesn't work when the characters are whitewashed. However, since Death Note is set in the real world, I don't mind giving it an American adaptation. But they could've done so much better. This film barely uses any of its original source material. The people that made this film obviously haven't seen the original anime. It looks like they just read a summary of it and just went from there.

In the original Death Note, Light was a genius who commits reasonable murders. In this film, he's the complete opposite. He's an actual dumbass, very unlikable, and has no clear motive behind the murders he commits. Mia is also unlikeable in this film. She and Light have absolutely no chemistry at all unlike Misa and Light in the original anime. Also, can we talk about the rule changes? There are several changes but I'll give you one. In the original Death Note, if you touch the book, you can see the Shinigami. In this film, only Light can see Ryuk and no one else can, even when Mia touches it.

The overall script is plain terrible. The soundtrack doesn't fit with the tone. There is no character development and every character is just one-dimensional. Most of the acting is bad, particularly from Nat Wolff and Margaret Qualley. The only good thing about this film was Willem Dafoe's performance as Ryuk. Aside from that, there's nothing good about this film, and I will never watch it again. If you're new to the Death Note franchise and want to get into it, stay away from this film.

The film has its flaws but I believe it's still worth watching
2 March 2021
Ashton Kutcher isn't exactly the best actor but I don't think he was a bad choice for Steve Jobs. He literally looks like him unlike Michael Fassbender. Josh Gad was also a good choice for Steve Wozniak. I understand this film is known for its historical inaccuracies, but I was still able to watch this film regardless.

A good movie idea ruined by a bland script and stereotypes
8 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of being stuck on ski lift is a good premise for a thriller movie, but it has its flaws. The script is basic and kinda bland. The characters come off as stereotypical, particularly Parker. Parker doesn't break her legs when she jumps off the lift, but Dan does. Parker surviving the jump is what ruined the movie for me. I don't mind an ending where Parker survives, but what we got seems like the writer of the film was struggling to find a way to have her survive. I was hoping to see something more challenging. The ending we got makes Parker look like a Mary Sue. It's like the average horror movie where the white virgin girl is the only survivor. Overall, the thrills were good but the dialogue is too basic and the characters are stereotypical.

A Teacher (2020)

It started good but ended poorly
22 January 2021
The first six episodes are great but the last four are uninteresting and just feel like filler episodes. Claire's character development does okay during the first six episodes but it decreased steadily during the last three. If the show ended at episode 6, I'd give a higher rating. If they really wanted four more episodes, they could've had better plotlines. Maybe they could've shown Claire's trial instead of just skipping over it and showing us what happens afterwards. The ending of the last episode was a terrible way to end a miniseries. Obviously it's not supposed to be a happy ending which is understandable, but they could've executed it in a much better way. Maybe a few more episodes could've done the show justice. Overall I liked the soundtrack and the performances from Kate Mara and Nick Robinson.

Walked out less than 20 minutes in
9 June 2019
My best friend and I saw this film a few days after Christmas back in 2018. We saw the trailer and thought it was gonna be funny. But the film got boring very quickly. The jokes were cheap, bland, and unfunny. I guess my friend felt the same way because within 15 minutes into the film, he turned to me and said, "Do you wanna leave?" I agreed, so we got up and walked out. We tried to get refunds but couldn't. We did however get readmission tickets so we could see a free movie next time we went to the cinema.
