Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)
Nothing less than Sherlock
Another instant classic from Dibakar Banarji. The characters were maybe adapted from someone else's work but he made them come alive. Detective Byomkesh Bakshi has class and style of a perfect conspiracy somewhat like Casino Royale. It had everything from an aspiring Detective, his not so ambitious assistant, an archnemesis and a masterfully worked plot. The camera work, themes and every technical aspect of the film is spectacular but the real strength of the movie lies in its plot. It keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole time. Also the acting in the film is very good especially Neeraj Kabi. DBB definitely raised the bar for Hindi thriller films. Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is an undenied classic. Its a shame people haven't took notice of it still after so many years. Also the unfortunate death for Sushant has put a question mark on the future of Detective Bakshi. I personally would have loved to see more of India's own Sherlock Holmes.
Company (2002)
Drama at its best
Satya was Street smart, gritty and had very defined emotions.
Company is different. It shows you the mob in a very Shakespearean way much like Vishal Bhardwaj's films. It is a cold hearted film with utmost details. Ramu did a fine job. It had no unnecessary songs that most films from that time had which slowed the pace of the films. The drama in company is very gritty. Every sequence leads upto a greater motive. The tension in the film feels real and those things make Company a true classic. Also Vivek was outstanding along with Ajay, and a very clinical Mohanlal.
Kaante (2002)
Remake worth watching
For those of you who haven't seen the original film. This film will be a mighty entertainer. The plot is easy to follow with some very good acting. Some scenes in this film are ao rich in its grit that you forget that they are just actors who are working for a living.
If you're seeing this review you should watch this film. You might get amazed. And those of you who care about remakes being worthless, to your surprise Quentin Tarantino himself has declared this film to be one of the best adaptations of his work.
Black Friday (2004)
Masterpiece!
A true cinematic gold which never received the attention of the general public. Maybe the government was too scared of its impact or the public wasn't ready enough to see such blissful interpretation of the serial Bombay blasts in 1993. The movie is so well directed that for one moment you forget its a work of fiction. It all feels very natural. The direction and editing are the soul of this movie. Anurag Kashyap agin proves his metal. Its a must watch for every Indian.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
Bhagat Singh
Its 2021 and the movie direction feels a bit outdated. Keeping patriotism aside this movie surely does good on many other angles. Like the ideology of Bhagat and his comrades. Their obsession with the Soviet revolution and Socialism is well potrayed. The scenes of bombing nad the murder od Sounders is also well directed. The live angle seems delebrate and unneeded ate up a lot of screen time. The scenes of his hunger strike are very well potrayed. It displays the dedication and willpower of Bhagat and his friends in its true colours.
I would still say that the direction still feels a bit outdated. In some parts the movie just becomes a musical interpretation. The court scenes look a bit cheesy. One thing that is done well is the representation of the Englishmen
All said its a fine piece of filmmaking. A good family watch.
