Fallout (2024)
Not great, not terrible
I don't think the series is bad, but I have the same problem with it as I did with "Fallout 4" - yes, it's still Fallout, but somehow it's not my Fallout anymore. Too colorful, too squeaky, too childish. The series unfortunately doesn't make me think about going back to New Vegas.
Maybe my problem is that I didn't like Fallout 4 and have been very critical of the whole franchise ever since, and maybe I'm too old. "Fallout 1", "Fallout 2", "Fallout Tactics: Broterhood of Steel", "Fallout 3" and "Fallout: New Vegas" are games that I remember fondly, but Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 were disasters in my eyes.
This series isn't a disaster, but it's rather mediocre for me.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Musical episodes are the worst
A friend told me about the series and said that it was the best Star Trek series since "DS9". I'm not really a Trekkie and have only seen a few movies but well, I got curious. Anyway, it started off really well and I would certainly have rated the series 8/10, maybe even 9/10. Although, because of "The Expanse", I can't really enjoy sci-fi series anymore, the show was just too good. So, let's say 8/10.
But then came the fairy tale episode and I was shocked. Such episodes tear me out of the immersion and leave a very bad aftertaste. I don't understand why something like that is necessary, it destroys the whole story. Well, anyway, I thought, as long as there's no musical episode, it's all good.
Season 2 came up and guess what? That's right, a musical episode. Before that, even a part-cartoon episode. And then a cliffhanger in The Walking Dead style.
For me, the whole thing was ruined, 6/10 for the effort.
Dark (2017)
After all the Hollywood monotony, finally something of high quality
Since I'm from Austria, I don't usually like German or Austrian tv shows. They have the same problem as Hollywood: they are produced for a huge, uniform audience and usually just put out more of the same.
Boring, underwhelming, etc.
For a long time I put "Dark" in this category, simply because of prejudices I had developed against German shows over the decades.
But "Dark" showed me that there are still series that you have to be fully aware of, otherwise you just don't understand what's happening. Challenging, very well made, with great actors. No uniform Hollywood faces that all end up looking the same: well-trained, good-looking, and even the cleaning lady has a white steel toothpaste smile. Here the actors look normal or good in their own way, but with quirks and flaws, simply much more human.
Great show, absolutely recommendable - but not to watch on the side.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Too much changes compared to the books
I don't care if a character is black, white, gay or whatever and i fully understand if you don't show everything what happend in books, they work differently. But if 40% of the story is changed then that's simply too much. "The Expanse" for example didn't film and show everything as it was in the books, but there was a lot less changes at all and that's why it's a good TV show. This here? It's "okayish" as books but as a TV show it's pretty bad. Too bad.
