The Quiet Earth (1985)
Simply exceptional
How would you handle it if you were the last person alive on the earth? This is the question posed by the Quiet Earth, also beyond this how would react knowing that an action or lack of one on your part had wiped out every living person on the face of the earth. Scientist Zack Hobson must deal with this reality when he wakes from his suicide attempt to find himself on the other side of an altered reality, alone. He at first goes quite insane, blaming himself for the accident because it was caused by the malfunction of a project that he was heading up. Later when he discovers two other "survivors" he formulates a plan that will reunite the two separated realities. The ending is one that will keep you thinking long after the credits have rolled.
The Thing (1982)
Top notch horror
The Thing is hands down the best horror film of the past twenty years. The story draws you in to the plight of the research scientists, and you can feel the tension continue to build all the way up to the final climax. This film should be in the library of anyone who values suspense, and/or action movies.
Red Dawn (1984)
Totally underappreciated
1984's Red Dawn is as creepy, and haunting of a social commentary as has ever been made. It should also be considered as the quintessential film for any would-be partisans. It shows the fractures of our society clearly, and what would be the likely result should our country ever be forced into a full scale war again. History not withstanding the characters of the Mayor, a self serving turncoat; Col. Bella, a tried soldier who just wants to return home from what has become a useless fight; and Jed the young, charismatic rebel leader who all to soon feels the true weight of command, are all especially telling. I feel this film has a place in any Americian History class across the country.
