Badge of Faith (2015)
It made want to become an athiest
I could never get emotionally involved with the story. The main character's acting was wooden and unemotional. There were a few contrived laughs that I found to be not so funny.
Best Night Ever (2013)
Enjoyable and Fun
I am aware that I am giving this movie a positive review when almost everyone else has given it negative reviews. Rarely do I differ from what everyone else's opinion is, particularly blatantly, particularly in a positive way.
Basically the story is about four young women traveling to Las Vegas where one will get married. It is about their exploits along the way. I found it to be very involving with many humorous, surprising and interesting twists and turns. The action is pretty much non stop with no boring moments. It kept my attention and enjoyment all the time. I am easily bored by movies so this was surprising since I had read the many negative reviews here before watching it.
I found it not to be anywhere near as poorly well made as others seemed to indicate. That's not to say it was well made, just not near as bad as others claimed. Yes, as some others state, most of the scenes are with a hand held camera. I found it over all a very entertaining movie well worth watching.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Good News - Bad News
The good news in Bill Murray does a great job of acting in this as do the other actors. It is also overall well made. The bad news it's r--e--a--l--l--y boring. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen and kept waiting until the end credits were rolling. I thought that it might be pretty good since it good a fairly high rating by the other IBD reviewers, but not so. In a few cases I just disagree with everyone else. This is one of those cases. All that I can figure out is that the good reviews were given just because it was well made and Sofia Coppola (Francis Ford's daughter) directed it. This one of the most unpleasant surprises that I have experienced in watching movies.
John Carter (2012)
The Best I've Seen This Year
This is the first movie that I've reviewed that I've given that good of a review to. I've noticed that some other reviewers have compared this favorably to Avatar. I can see the similarity - an abundance of special effects, weird creatures and alien settings in most scenes. The movie is stunning to look at from a special effects perspective also the 3D is the best that I've seen ever. Usually I look at the 3D as being something wasted, but not so here. I also got involved in the characters and the story is good too. I am easily bored in movies but not so this time. Anybody that enjoys action and special effects movies will surely like this as will many others too.
Warrior (2011)
Average at Best
This is the typical fight film formula, the underdog fighter comes from the bottom of the heap to make it big. Other reviewers have compared it favorably to two other famous fight films, Rocky and Million Dollar Baby. Those movies had exciting fights, involvement in the characters, and entertaining plots. Unfortunately Warrior has none of these. Most of the fights are really short, usually lasting a few seconds and the climactic fight is not real exciting (but not bad). I couldn't really get too involved with the characters and in fact could care less about them. There's not that much of a plot line and what there is is not that involving.
I'm not saying that this movie is a total zero, it's just not that great. If you want to see better fight movies then rent Rocky or Million Dollar Baby.
I am aware that many others are giving much more positive reviews of this movie than I am giving it. Rarely do I differ that much with the reviews that others give. I can only describe things as I see them. I can not see how people could leave the theater crying unless it is from being upset after having paid money to see this.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Chick flick
This movie isn't terrible, just not that good.
I've never seen this before, but maybe it's happened. A movie musical where all the actors are singing 30 year old pop songs. This is a good idea in that Abba had some truly great songs. This means that the movie musical has mostly great songs in it as opposed to most musicals that have only one or two good songs in them. On the negative side I can't help but compare the singing in the movie to the actual singing by Abba. The singing actors come out a really bad 2nd. The writers of this movie where able to come up with a movie musical doing little or no music writing. If you were to take out the songs I think that this movie would have very little going for it.
It's hard for me to see how most adult males could really enjoy this movie. All of the central characters are female and a light romantic comedy. I find some chick flicks enjoyable, but not this one.
My girlfriend bought the sound track CD to this, was disappointed, then bought the Best of Abba CD by Abba. If you want to buy a CD buy the one by Abba, not the one from the movie.
