Blue Beetle (2023)
Went in with bad expectations, was pleasantly surprised
From the trailers, I honestly thought this movie was going to be too cheesy for me.
I'm so glad I went anyways! I was so pleasantly surprised. As a Mexican immigrant in the US, this was so reflective of the experience. I had so much nostalgia at all the references from novelas in my childhood, that warm feeling when you're part of a big family, the casual Spanglish lol
Honestly I felt SO MUCH PRIDE coming out of this movie! I'm loving getting to see Mexican people on the big screen in a whole new way between him, Namor, & America Chavez. I hope we can keep this momentum going!
I've never had so much fun going to the movies!
The Flash (2023)
Disappointing after all the hype
I was very excited about this movie but tbh I left the theater very disappointed
I DID love Sasha Calle's performance and Michael Keaton in this, but Ezra Miller's performance did not deliver. It felt like they'd have preferred to have been doing a stoner comedy than a Flash movie. Barry had none of the geeky charm usually found in the character and was instead obnoxious and whiney.
I'd dig a spin off with just Supergirl and Keaton's Batman as adoptive dad. Actually, I really want a solo flick for Calle's Supergirl because her performances were excellent, and the depth of the character is so rich and has so much to offer, but that ending left me feeling like we're not gonna get the chance to see her again.
Wednesday (2022)
Doesn't live up to the Addams legacy
I was very excited for this show, and while it's visually spectacular, & Jenna Ortega's performance is fantastic, the writing and direction of this show leaves a lot to be desired.
I understand the need to make something new & different from something established & loved, but everything that made the Addams family fantastic was stripped from the show. The relationships that made them so beloved are nowhere to be found. Wednesday had great potential to lead a show, but the writing failed her.
If they do manage to pull a second season, I sincerely hope they restructure the way they tell the next story.
The Midnight Club (2022)
Bit of a bummer
Started off strong and I went in excited: I've loved Flanagan's work on Hill House and Bly Manor. Was psyched for a more diverse cast, and more lgbt rep. But it just didn't do what the other shows did in my opinion.
The only relationship I was really invested in was put to pasture in ep 3, and the characters were difficult to like, unlike how easy it was to love those in the other shows. No blame on the young actors who put out great performances, but the writing and the story just wasn't as strong, though the potential for it was certainly there.
The clues are laid out quite plainly and ways to solve the puzzles more so and yet it took forever to get anywhere. Just, not the best. Hoping Flanagan comes back to the Haunting formula instead.
Werewolf by Night (2022)
Best Disney+ Marvel release yet
The return to old school monster horror we've desperately been lacking! Everything from the way it was shot, the black and white with the red, Laura Donnelly!!! Gael!!! As someone who loves the production aspect of it and has been missing the reliance on practical effects with sfx used to enhance instead of taking over a movie entirely, this was a breath of life into one of my favorite verses.
There was nothing I didn't love about this movie and want a whole lot more! Really hoping they'll be doing a whole series of movies in this style. We could kind of see a hint of this in MoM but in my opinion this worked so much better.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Superhuman Law (2022)
Ep2 Better than the first!
I loved that in this ep it is more about HER and what she's going through dealing with the consequences of Hulking out than making it all about Bruce. Seeing as it's Supposed to be the Jennifer Walters show, it seems appropriate to stop sending the focus to her cousin.
Really enjoyed the 4th wall breaking so Jen could laugh with us about certain jokes, and overall am just really enjoying watching Jen's growth.
My only complaint is that the episodes aren't longer.
Tatiana Maslany is a fantastic and extremely charismatic actress and I'm so glad to have her back on my screen! Her work on Orphan Black is unparalleled and I'm psyched to see her back playing more epic and kick ass women!
A League of Their Own (2022)
Fantastic!
I hadn't watched the movie until I heard this show was coming & it was going to give us great rep and loved the movie more than I expected I would. And this SHOW? I honestly figured it'd be a lot slower but it had me GRIPPED from the first episode, & had me loving these characters from the very beginning.
The writing was excellent & took me on a rollercoaster of ups & downs, of loving characters to being upset at their actions, and then bringing me back to loving them when we got to see more of where they were coming from. Relationships I thought I'd be writing off for the sake of my favorite ships ended up being more complex than other shows would've let them be making me more engaged with their stories.
The season finally had me so happy for all the girls but also desperately hoping we'll get a season 2 because I want to see Max living her dream, I want to see Greta & Carson reunited, I want more Maybelle who cracked me up with her confrontation of Shirley's hang ups in the last two episodes, I want to see Lupe actually developing a mentor/mentee bond with Esti after spending a season pushing her away
I've loved seeing the ladies these characters were based on showering the show with praise, speaking so highly about how these events are very accurate to their experiences of the time. I've loved seen cast members from the OG Movie being so happy that the show gets to give the audience what they were held back from offering up though they wanted to in the 90's.
I've also found it highly amusing to see the ignorant attempting to review bomb this series with critiques that make it clear they knew nothing of women's baseball, of the queer culture in womens sports and how deep it ran even back then, their ignorance about POCs in sports--as they claim it's completely unrealistic to show these black teams "before Jackie Robinson" while completely ignoring the leagues mentioned in the show, those black athletes who were making names for themselves, but that they (the ignorant reviewers) have no knowledge of due to their own biases. I've also gotten a kick out of seeing men commenting about how this show is doing a disservice to women's sports and the original movies, as if they wouldn't have protested the OG movie release simply for being focused on women as well.
Beyond that, I've gotta say I am thrilled by every character, and every storyline in this show. Here's hoping for many more seasons to come. I sincerely hope AmazonPrimeVideo does right by it in future seasons & doesn't pull a TheWilds by having pulled the audience in with wlw poc female led stories only to inject it with white dudes galore in a second season, completely disregarding who the audience showed up for in the first place. Keep the focus on the lgbt & poc ladies in the upcoming seasons pelase!
Supergirl: A Few Good Women (2021)
Poor showing
After the triumphant, emotional return for season six, I had high hopes for this season that 6.02 just dashed with its terrible showing. 601 set up so many new lines of communication between characters & moved pieces to serious conversations to be had in 602...and yet 602 seems to have completely forgotten what happened just one episode before? Lena was ready and had the tech to make the jump after Kara already & her and Brainy teaming up has always been the solution to just about any problem on the show. Alex herself has gone to Lena EVERY SINGLE TIME OVER YEARS that all hope seems lost to pull out a win. Why now was she separated & had no participation in the retrieval of the woman she recently fought so hard to regain in her life? Her and Alex had the deepest loss at Kara's absence, and she was the one to push Alex to speak to Kelly about what happened to her sister. WHERE WAS ANY OF THAT?! WHY DID KELLY AND DANSEN'S REALLY IMPORTANT CONVERSATION JUST NOT OCCUR AT ALL?! I'm astounded time and again at the inconsistency in the quality of writing and showing on this show. And Kara's line to her father about having lost everyone she loved in that cavern when literally the most important people in her life weren't even present in that scenario she describes? Are we just supposed to believe Alex and Eliza mean nothing to her? Jonn? Lena? I don't know. Honestly I'm just so painfully disappointed in what you pulled here. So many of us showed up for this episode because 601 was so good but this was a farce. What a shame.
Supergirl: Rebirth (2021)
SUPERCORP ENDGAME!
THIS EPISODE WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN I COULDVE EVER HOPED AFTER THE STRAIN OF LAST SEASON! Lena's moment with Kara were so weighted and wonderful, you can truly feel her remorse and how she intends to work hard to earn Kara's trust again. Kara assuring her she trusts her despite everything?! That moment where Lena emotionally pleads with Kara not to go on a suicide mission felt so heavy with intent, a love confession & farewell kiss would not have been out of place!
Kara coming into a whole new level of her confidence was so much! And her farewells hurt so much! I'm glad Lena encouraged Alex to talk about all this with Kelly because she knew how hard it was to deal with this alone!
Brainy giving Nia her ring gives me hope that we'll get our big three endgames: Supercorp, Dansen, Brainia happy together in the end!
Cannot wait to see what the rest of this season has in store for us!
Oh, and the William thing felt wholly out of place and as much of an after thought as he was for me to remember adding him. Seriously? Why would a woman he went on ONE lackluster date on take the time to tell him she's going? Get a life dude.
Supergirl: Alex in Wonderland (2020)
Alex Love!
I feel like Alex hasn't gotten enough room to shine over the last two seasons and I was thrilled to get her in a super suit all of her own! (really wish she could keep it). Chyler KILLED it! Utterly heartbreaking but so glad Alex managed to find her way back to her family, and the woman she loves/who loves her so much.
Still not sure what they're trying to do with William as a character. He seems utterly redundant. Everyone else is already doing all these things they've given to him the last two eps and it just feels rather pointless to have him ALSO doing it? Why not focus on the characters you've had for seasons past instead of trying to insert a new dude who doesn't seem to click?
Supergirl: It's a Super Life (2020)
Supercorp Endgame!
LOVED getting to see validation after validation of just HOW IMPORTANT Lena is to Kara and Kara is to Lena! Their worlds fall apart without the other at their side! There were some weak points to force rather positive situations into a negative outcomes which were bummers but over all this episode REALLY cemented how much Kara and Lena, these Luvers, are meant to be! While I loved Kara taking a stand at the end, the moment was ranked with a rather OOC line reminiscent of the mess up of s3 but other than that, a truly excellent ep!
Supergirl: Back from the Future - Part Two (2020)
Where are the main character's stories?
Grateful Kara didn't end up with the blank cardboard slate that is William Dey (Dude has no personality whatsoever), but to also give a synopsis stating Alex and Dansen would be getting some limelight and failing to deliver while your one trans character goes completely MIA, forcing stories to revolve around a character that's left and we've all moved on from instead of the CURRENT angsty storyline between Kara and her best friend... this no longer feels like the show I love.
Supergirl: Back from the Future - Part One (2020)
Meh
I get the nostalgia of wanting Winn back for the cast, but I'll be honest, once he left, I never missed him. But having him back WAS more fun than expected. Won't mind a two to three ep arc of his. I'll admit his presence was made more tolerable by the complete disregard and lack of acknowledgement of a certain toxic manhellish character.
A bit confused as to how Kara's season-long angst about losing Lena was swept aside and things seemed almost happy go-lucky when her world is supposedly falling apart.
Also confused by the continued shoe-horning of William Dey into Supergirl's life when they've barely interacted, and none of it has been particularly amicable.
The preview for next week with William asking Kara out and Kara saying "I haven't felt this way in a long time" seemed extremely out of place and forced since they've had zero heat building between them for over ten episodes now.
The truly ugly part was the rather unfortunate naming of a comic canon wlw character being named Winn's (a cis male's) wife. It feels like a purposeful attack on the queer women who watch the show.
Shameful really.
I probably would've left a more moderate rating had Mr David Harewood (director of this episode) not found it necessary to go on a twitter rampage comparing the rather horrifying helicopter tragedy that took the lives of multiple people to his episode not doing well. When he later claimed that he had no publicist, a lot became clear.
A lot of this show's cast seem to be lacking in the tact department. Perhaps TheCW should invest in some self conduct when engaging in public forums for their actors because this cast (baring maybe three or four individuals) seem incapable of putting their foot in their mouths when interacting with the shows fans.
Supergirl: The Bottle Episode (2020)
Jesse is a GIFT!
Jesse Rath is an excellent performer and I was SUPER glad for him having another opportunity to stretch his acting chops and really shine once more!
And whenever he gets to perform with his sis Meaghan? That magic doubles! Glad they tossed another LGBT crumb by having her have a wife after seeing the most recent episode erased a different wlw character's sexuality:/
Would've been 10/10 but the show seems to be dropping the ball on Kara's fight for Lena that we were promised but 9/10 is still pretty epic!
Supergirl: Event Horizon (2019)
EXCELLENT
THE way to kick off the new season! Diving straight into the conversation. We've been waiting for since season two. Can't wait to watch their story progress but really hope Lena comes back around soon. I love the relationship between Kara and Lena and it would be a shame to turn them into yet another Lex and Clark...that story has been told one too many times. Time to let the ladies show them how it's done and come together!
Supergirl: In Plain Sight (2019)
Not particularly good
The characters felt distinctly OOC and so far the third weakest episode of season five to be honest.
Supergirl: Dangerous Liaisons (2019)
Weak
Honestly the weakest episode this season. All the dialogue sounded like something a twelve year old would write during their first foray into a plot driven fanfic. Weak, transparent, "telling not showing". Truly a disappointing episode
Supergirl: Blurred Lines (2019)
Supercorp is coming!
I know Melissa said it'd be rocky road ice cream but I didn't realize just how sweet the Supercorp moments really would be! I'm praying to Rao Lena stops fighting her obvious feelings towards Kara! It's clear she's warring with herself multiple times in this ep & Hope seems to be the catalyst to the worst of it! The fight for Lena continues!
Dansen was cute but hate that Kelly was sent away so early in their relationship. On the one hand, I love how concerned Alex is for Kelly, but on the other, she seems more stressed and less confident than she'd normally be in this situation.
I didn't really appreciate the turn DreamDox took though. I am very much with Brainy on this and think Nia could have found a better way to ask him to tone it down a little.
I get what happened with Malefic but don't understand how he got so corrupted so quickly but I guess J'onn was right, he was born bad and was just looking for an excuse.
