Angels and Insects (1995)
Angels and Insects is an Exceedingly Brilliant Movie
Kristin Scott Thomas gives an Oscar worthy performance full of nuances and subtleness in tune with a by gone Victorian era when nothing is out rightly spoken but always hinted at so unlike our lurid confessional age. Thomas can infuse a scene with a multiplicity of meaning through a movement of the wrist or a tilt of a head and trounces Emma Thompson's lauded performance of British reserve in "Remains of the Day". To appreciate this film you need an artist eye, others who dislike it would be better off getting whacked with a sledgehammer!
In my opinion this movie is one of the most intricate, well-made films I've seen in a long while. The acting is tremendous, the imagery is subtle and yet stunning. This film makes one think of the intricacies of human relationships. The pilgrimage of the hero from the brutal Amazon to "civilized" society which he finds to be anything but civilized in spite of the gorgeous trappings of the upper aristocracy. I highly recommended it.
In summary Angels and Insects is not your average period drama, the costumes, design, music and camerawork steer clear of naturalism, highlighting both the modernity of the approach and the notions of humans as creatures to be observed dispassionately. Despite some uneven pacing and variability in performance, this film is a work of Clarity, Ambition and Intelligence.

Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984)
Bloodbath at the House of Death - A Brilliant Portrayal of Comedy and One of the Funniest Spoofs of all time.
Storyline:
Six Scientists arrive at the Creepy Headstone Manor to investigate a strange phenomena which was the site of a mysterious massacre years earlier where 18 guests were killed in one night. It turns out that the house is the place of a satanic cult lead by a sinister monk who plans to kill the scientists who are inhabiting this house of Satan.
Bloodbath at the House of Death is a Camp British Horror starring Horror icon Vincent Price & Comedy legend Kenny Everett. It tells the story of a group of Scientists and Experts in their field who investigate the Mysterious Blood House where 18 people were savagely murdered in one night. To it's credit the film has a lot of imagination, from original death scenes to some fantastic satirical humour! The Film itself is ahead of it's time and Price and Everett are both excellent. The Movie is favoured for the absolute dedication to Kenny's unique style of comedy, where no joke was either too obvious or too tasteless to be included. Vincent Price appears to have a very good time as the 'Sinister Man'. I enjoyed seeing snippets of Kenny in Australia promoting the film, and enjoyed learning the background story of how this magnificent purposefully B Grade Film sadly missed getting the exposure and wide success which it truly deserved. Twenty five years after the limited Cinematic release the world has a second chance to embrace "Bloodbath At The House Of Death" as one of the all time great kitsch Cult Classics.
Kenny Everett was, in my eyes, one of the Funniest and most Original Entertainers this World has ever seen. This film along with 'The adventures of Captain Kremmen' shows but a tiniest portion of the mans talent. 'Bloodbath at the House of Death.' while remaining Very British in some respects, I feel, allows Kenny Everett's sense of humour to be enjoyed World-Wide. In my opinion this really is a must see Film!

Ladybird Ladybird (1994)
Ladybird Ladybird - Probably The Most Powerful & Psychologically Disturbing Film Ever Made.
Based on a true story this Ken Loach docu-drama relates the story of a British woman's fight with Social Services over the care of her children. Maggie has a history of bouncing from one abusive relationship to another. She has four children, from four different fathers, who came to the attention of Social Services when they were injured in a fire. Subsequently, Maggie was found to be an "Unfit Mother" and her Children were removed from her care. She finally meets the man of her dreams, a Paraguayan expatriate, and they start a family together. Unfortunately, Social Services seems unwilling to accept that her life has changed and decide to take away their new-born baby. She and Jorge both together, and separately set about fighting Social Services, Immigration, and other Government Bureaucrats in a desperate battle to reunite their Family again. Chrissy Rock gave an unforgettable performance in this little seen film. I was amazed at the intensity of Crissy Rock's performance and horrified at all the things she had to endure. Vladimir Vega's subtle work as Jorge should be given an equal amount of credit. The emotional honesty in this movie is amazing and I had to pause the VCR a few times because I was emotionally drained. This Movie in my opinion is well written by Rona Munro and Superbly Directed by Ken Loach. It's a Powerful, Humbling and touching Story, and that's why I give this Film a well deserved 10/10.

The Fool (1990)
The Fool - Skull-Duggery, and Confidence Tricksters in Both the Upper and Lower Classes in Victorian London.
The Fool is a Costume Drama and Satire about Financial Skull-Duggery, and Confidence Tricksters in both the Upper and Lower Classes in Victorian London. A working class man impersonates a Lord who is supposedly very rich, and a financial wizard. As such, he is invited to all the best peoples' parties. In fact, he is not, and his wealth and expertise are more in the minds of his associates than in reality. Interestingly, despite the large social gap between the two classes, there are many similarities in what goes on in both within this story. This can be seen as the main character switches back and forth between his charade as a peer, and his real self.
An extraordinary film from Christine Edzard, who also directed Little Dorrit. The film has an atmospheric, almost Dickensian ambience. Jacobi is superb, underplaying his dual roles while clearly establishing two different characters. The supporting cast, especially Cyril Cusack, is also--forgive the repetition--superb. The subtle social satire regarding the haves' attitudes toward the have not's (and vice versa), is clearly relevant today.

Someone Else (2006)
A Movie to take your Boy or Girlfriend to !
There's a saying, when you are in a relationship, it is still OK to, 'look at the scenery.' There is perhaps an irresistible human urge, especially in the male that is genetically programmed to sow his oats as wide as possible, at least to consider how green the grass might be when it is just out of reach. But if that sounds like an apologia to male chauvinism, Someone Else is every girl's dream for the warning shot to make him count his blessings. British romantic comedy with a hard edge.
Dave and Lisa have been in a relationship for nearly three years. Over dinner, their two married friends tease them about tying the knot and Dave is visibly less comfortable than is Lisa. He and Nina have been having an affair and, when pushed, Dave decides to own up to Lisa and tell her he is love with someone else. Although Lisa is furious, Dave is even less prepared for Nina's reaction. She is everything his girlfriend isn't - did he expect any less? What makes Someone Else stand out is the unsettling realism of the characters and a script that sounds spontaneous and natural. Dave's plight is guaranteed to make every man in the audience feel sheepishly uncomfortable, and there are no reassuringly sentimental story lines. The ensemble cast of attractive young 30-somes is frighteningly unlike the stock caricatures of romantic comedy and, as Dave's confidence and charm desert him, the film is a challenging broadside to the male psyche. It marks a debut for director and scriptwriter Col Spector - one that he handles with considerable aplomb. It also manages to take a cynical look at Reiki healing, swinging, and dating agencies - though not without reversing many of our assumptions in the light of later developments. " 'I like any sort of music' . . . " reads David from a girl's dating profile, "she's got one album, 'The Best of Music.' " This beautiful bittersweet comedy is unafraid to tackle taboos and unrelenting in its exposure of men's hidden thoughts. It keeps us on our toes as we are never quite sure of the direction it is going in i.e. The movie has it's quirky moments for example when Neville Bardoliwalla pops up unexpectedly as Freddie Mercury during a photo shoot scene!

The Rainbow (1989)
The Rainbow (1989) - Excellent DH Lawrence Adaptation by Director Ken Russell
A young woman deals in her own personal way with the trials of adolescence and young adulthood in early 1900s England. Ken Russell's loose adaptation of the last part of D.H. Lawrence's "The Rainbow" sees impulsive young Ursula coming of age in pastoral England around the time of the Boer War. At school, she is introduced to lovemaking by a bisexual physical education instructress. While experiencing disillusionment in her first career attempt (teaching), she has an affair with a young Army officer, who wants to marry her. Unable to accept a future of domesticity, she breaks with him, and eventually leaves home in search of her destiny.
This Movie by Ken Russell is based upon the writings of the legendary Victorian era author D.H. Lawrence, but with a Ken Russell twist. The story is about a young woman (Sammi Davis) who wants to live her life but she has to do it during the repressive Victorian age of England. But she meets a mentor (Amanda Donohoe) who shows her the many ways she can escape her button up lifestyle (if only for a few hours at a time). I recommend this Film for Ken Russell fans and those who if like period films.
Overall I did love this film, which in my opinion is a beautifully written and filmed story of a young woman who just wants more than her unsightly industrial town has to offer. She is influenced by a couple of unconventional older people in her life. I thought it was a sensual portrait of bisexuality and creative freedom. This is period drama that has genuine relevance to modern life and modern concerns, and is a great coming-of-age story with a brave and life-inspiring message.

Dirty Weekend (1993)
Dirty Weekend - Excellent Film by Michael Winner
Shortly after Bella moves into her own flat in Brighton, she finds out that she is being spied on and generally harassed by a man living across from her. Finally driven to solving the problem with a hammer, she realises she is then ready for a crusade against other such problem males. Dirty weekend is a very well made film as you would expect from Michael Winner. To sum it up, it is basically a feminist version of Death Wish about a woman who gets pushed around, experiences her own powerlessness and one day decides she's had enough. Needless to say that she then spends a weekend with a gun meeting a lot of creeps. Some of ther performances are great. David McCallum as psyohopathic dentist alone is worth watching the film. As always Winner plays effectively with audience by getting us to actually want her to pull the trigger. Of course, it is all black and white in terms of morals and the likelihood of meeting such an assortment of scumbags in one weekend is not really that big. But all in all the film is extremely well made. What impressed me most was the very effective use of music in the film. I found it remarkable that the French film "Baise Moi" allegedly a feminist masterpiece is a shameless rip off of Dirty Weekend, lifting complete scenes from Winner's film.

The Pope Must Die (1991)
The Pope Must Die - Storyline
According to Stephen Graham and Constance Wu of The Guardian Film Review (1991), The Pope Must Die is a Scintillating well written Comedy escapade by Writers Peter Richardson and Pete Richens. In the Movie a less than qualified and far from perfect Priest is mistakenly named the New Pontiff. As the Pope, he must deal with Vatican Corruption, the Mobsters and the reappearance of an old lover. Paul Bartel turns in one of his best performances on par with Robbie Coltrane. This film is truly hilarious and if you're Catholic and fairly broadminded, it's a scream. Annette Crosbie as the nun, and Ade Edmundson as the deaf Priest are the best performers in my opinion - save for Herbert Lom and Robbie Coltrane who really make this movie come alive. The film has plenty of heart and is a must see.

The Freddie Mercury Tribute: Concert for AIDS Awareness (1992)
Excellent Concert, For Rock Leading Frontman Freddie Mercury RIP
This Concert was everything it lived up to be. The Bands did a Very Good job performing. My personal favorite performance was the one put on by Guns N Roses. The recording showed alot of Archive footage of Freddie Mercury, as well as Queen. From the beginning of their career, to the very end.
The Concert has alot of Great Moments, especially Liz Taylor making her big begging speech to the crowd. This Concert is for everyone, Queen fans, or fans wanting to know about Queen and of course Freddie Mercury. This really is an Excellent Concert to watch, rent, or buy, you won't be disappointed.

We Will Rock You: Queen Live in Concert (1983)
We Will Rock You - Queen Live in Concert (1982 Video)
This is an Arena Concert performed in Montreal in the early 80's. At the time, Queen were riding high on the success of their album The Game; their peak of popularity in North America. The audience is not as responsive as European audiences i.e. Compared with Live at Wembley '86 or Live Killers, nonetheless, their popular anthems get an astounding reaction from the audience and the performance is fantastic because you get some songs performed live that were taken out of the set on later tours. So if you're in it for the music, then this is a truly great show to watch. On the other hand If you want to see a huge concert then I recommend you watch Live at Wembley '86. This version of 'Queen Live' is without a doubt the Greatest Live video by Queen so far, it is certainly one to watch and I highly recommend it.

Imagine: Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender (2012)
"I Am The Great Pretender" ! - Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender is an Emmy / Rose d'Or Award winning 2012 feature-length documentary about Queen singer Freddie Mercury and his attempt to forge a solo career. The documentary premiered on BBC One in edited form as part of the Imagine series, and later the Director's Cut was shown on BBC Four. It gained 3.5 million viewers when aired on BBC One in October 2012 and a further 1.2 million when shown on BBC Four.
Reuniting the Producer, Editor and Director of Photography behind 2011's widely acclaimed Queen: Days of Our Lives BBC documentary, The Great Pretender in similar vein presents a compelling insight into its subject matter, unearthing previously undiscovered or rarely seen footage.
Produced and Directed by Rhys Thomas, a lifelong Queen Fan and expert (to the extent that he famously broke the Mastermind all-time record points score with a specialist subject of Queen), Thomas has this time turned his attention to the Freddie Mercury archive, going back as early as 1976 in search of vintage gems which reveal more than ever before the inside story of Mercury's life and career and the solo projects he worked on outside of Queen.
The extensive archive footage is drawn from rare interviews with Mercury, concerts, video shoots and personal material, much of it being seen for the first time, along with newly filmed contributions from fellow Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, Queen Manager Jim Beach, Soprano Montserrat Caballé, composers David Arnold and Mike Moran, lyricist Tim Rice and many more. From it emerges a portrait of a man who was very different from his flamboyant onstage public persona.
The Great Pretender includes for the first time ever Mercury and Rod Stewart singing their 1984 demo for "Let Me Live", a snippet of the then unreleased Michael Jackson collaboration "There Must Be More To Life Than This", and Mercury with The Royal Ballet in 1979, never seen in full before.

Live Aid (1985)
Queen - The Greatest Live Performance in the History of Rock
Queen's twenty one minute performance, which began at 6:41 PM, has been voted - by more than 60 artists, journalists and music industry executives - the greatest live performance in the history of rock. Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury at times led the crowd in unison refrains, and his sustained note during the a cappella section came to be known as "The Note Heard Round the World". The band's six song set opened with a shortened version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and closed with "We Are the Champions". Mercury and fellow band member Brian May later sang the first song of the three-part Wembley event finale, "Is This the World We Created." At the conclusion of the Wembley performances, Bob Geldof was raised onto the shoulders of the Who's guitarist Pete Townshend and Paul McCartney.
Live Aid eventually raised $127 million in famine relief for African nations, and the publicity it generated encouraged Western nations to make available enough surplus grain to end the immediate hunger crisis in Africa. It's also worth noting that the official Live Aid DVD is the only authorised video release in which proceeds go directly to famine relief, the cause that the concert was originally intended to help.

Freddie Mercury, the Untold Story (2000)
Excellent Documentary and such a Great Insight into the Life Of Freddie Mercury
This is by far one of the best documentaries of Freddie Mercury I have ever seen. It takes you through a detailed account of his life, from his birth in Zanzibar, through his time in boarding school, finding a love for Performing Arts, Art, Music as well as a whole host of things he was interested in. You are taken through his whole life, with comments from his close long-term friends, lovers, family, and band members as well as old school friends and colleagues. The story takes you through the last days and moments of his life. There is plenty of footage of Queen and plenty of Queen tunes played throughout the documentary. It is a great rock documentary dedicated to the one and only Freddie Mercury and I highly recommend it.
Yours Sincerely,

Queen Live at Wembley '86 (1986)
One of my all time Favourite Rock Concerts
One of the world's biggest bands Queen return to the scene of their Live Aid (1985) triumph a year earlier to play all their greatest hits in front of a packed Wembley Stadium. This is from Queen's famous "Magic Tour", which was their biggest ever world tour and also their final tour with the classic line up of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Their final concert with Mercury as frontman was soon after this one, at Knebworth Park. Because of Mercury's declining health (he was diagnosed with AIDS the following year), they were never able to tour again.

10 Rillington Place (1971)
Christie Dunnit !
London, 1949. John Reginald Halliday Christie is an unassuming, middle-aged man who, along with his wife Ethel, lives in the ground-floor flat at 10 Rillington Place. His demeanor masks the fact of being a serial killer. His modus operandi is to act as a person with a medical background, lure unsuspecting women to his apartment on the pretense of curing them of some ailment, knock them unconscious with carbon monoxide gas, gain his sexual release through contact with the unconscious body, then strangle the victim dead before disposing of the body somewhere in the house or outside area. His next intended target is Beryl Evans, a young woman who has just moved into the top flat in the house. Beryl's husband, Tim Evans, is an illiterate man who likes to put on airs. Already with an infant daughter named Geraldine, the Evanses learn they are going to have another baby, which they cannot afford to have, nor can they afford to abort the pregnancy. Based on a series of real-life killings, the story follows John Christie as he cons a pregnant bride (Judy Geeson) and wonders if he might have found a scapegoat in her husband (John Hurt).

Queen: Live in Rio (1986)
Queen - Greatest Rock Band Ever
A truly magnificent concert. Freddie took it further than the rest... he took it over the edge. And of course, I always admired a man who wears tights. I only saw him in concert once and as they say, he was definitely a man who could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. I highly recommend it.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Rock Band Queen / Film: Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

Clockwise (1986)
'A Flawlessly Well Executed British Comedy Classic'.
In this Classic of a movie we see Cleese very much in Basil Fawlty mode, as an aspiring head-teacher for whom things just don't run smooth when it really matters. Clockwise is an absolutely underrated British Comedy Classic in which John Cleese, a man who's a stickler for being on time, struggles to get to an appointment. Set over the course of a single day, it has an extremely simplistic narrative, and yet it's stands out as one of my all time favourite comedies ever. Personally I think John Cleese is a comic genius, and his character here - a riff on Basil from Fawlty Towers is sheer brilliance.
This is one of the finest farces I've ever seen brought to the screen, written naturally enough by theatre farce-meister Michael Frayn. The frenetic energy of John Cleese in his prime really lifts this above the norm, as he hitches a ride with a student, bumps into and kidnaps an ex-girlfriend and winds up naked in a monastery. The climactic scenes at the HMC amount to perhaps the finest pay-off seen in farce. This is, indeed, a historic moment. I rate this Movie 9/10

The Madness of King George (1994)
Superb, Flawless, Exquisitely Crafted Combination of Tragedy and Comedy.
The Madness of King George illustrates just how mad the ruler of England became at some point in time due to an illness doctors knew very little about.
How his illness is treated is at the core of this story, when King George III is assigned a doctor (Ian Holm) to use whatever means are necessary to restore sanity. All the while, court intrigue has everyone in parliament conspiring about appointing a Regent to take over the King's duties. His son, the Prince of Wales (Actor Rupert Everett) is more then willing to replace his father on the throne.
Much of it is played for fine comic effect with many nuances and comic timing in spite of the seriousness of the central character's illness. Actor Nigel Hawthorne recreates his London stage role, playing the part of the mad king to perfection. Helen Mirren is highly satisfactory as his wife who wants nothing more than to see him make a complete recovery and Rupert Graves is fine in one of the more low-key roles as one of the King's supportive aids.
As usual in all of these British historical pieces, the settings, costumes, photography, art direction are all very exquisite. The photography is a marvel at suggesting that only candlelight illuminates many of the scenes so that it's like watching a series of fine paintings come to life. Effective use of Handel's music provides solid support throughout. All in all I highly recommend watching this film which gets a rating of 9 out of 10.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Few storybooks have been more brilliantly brought to life, page for page, chapter for chapter, derring-do for derring-do than this full-coloured recounting of the fabulous deeds of legend's arch-archer, Sir Robin of Locksley. In Errol Flynn, Sir Robin of Sherwood Forest has found his man, a swashbuckler from peaked cap to pointed toe, defiant of his enemies and England's, graciously impudent with his lady love, quick for a fight or a frolic. He moves swiftly when there's need and Guy of Gisbourne rues it.
