Transformers 4 = Bad sequel too long
8 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Set 5 years after the catastrophic battle of Chicago, Nest has been dissolved & the autobots had been given asylum on Earth. Unbeknownst to the government, a rouge group called cemetery wind are hunting down all the transformers(Autobots/decepticons) for their parts with the help of another robot who is neutral & wants to capture Optimus prime, forcing them all to hide. Later, a inventor finds prime and ultimately decides to help him defeat the bad guys.

In this sequel, Michael Bay has a new cast replace the original cast from the previous 3 movies. This new cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammar, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz.

Now one of the major issues of this film is that it is unnecessarily nearly 3 hours long. Also the new characters of this film are more annoying than any of the previous characters from the previous film. The acting is just plain poor especially from Grammar and Peltz. Michael Bay direction isn't effective. The movie almost has the same problems of that of Revenge of the fallen and is just as worse as that film. Their is unnecessary family drama and boyfriend issues thrown in this film. The action sequences of this film are also boring and hardly memorable. Mark Wahlberg is just merely ok as Cade Yeager though he isn't as great as Shia LeBeouf was in the previous films. The story too just doesn't make any sense & it continues going and going. The dialogue too is very weak in this film.

For the redeeming parts of the film, I think like always, Peter Cullen & other actors voicing the robots are effective like always. Also the dinobots who appear in the final act of the film are also very cool and an interesting addition. Despite this, this is one of the worst movies of 2014.

When sequels tops the original
8 May 2023
Normally, Sequels to decade old film classics aren't really that good. However, top gun: maverick, which is sequel to the 1986 film top gun, is a rare example of when the sequel tops the original. I thought the film would be good only, however it was actually better than I had expected it to be.

Tom cruise reprising his role as Pete Maverick from the original, is excellent in this film and this is got to be one of his best performances in recent years. Miles teller as Bradley, the son of the deceased goose, is a great addition to this film and his relationship with Pete is interesting to see. Jennifer Connelly as Penny(Pete's new love interest) is also delightful to watch though it's confusing why they never mentioned anything about Kelly McGillis's character from the original. Val Kilmer is also wonderful as iceman and the emotional weight is felt when he passes away. Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and others as well are also great additions to the film and give out splendid performances.

The action sequences such as the pilots flying out the jets and then performing the final task are suspenseful. The scenes had splendid cinematography and had some of the crazy angle shots ever in a film. The sound(specifically that of the jets) too is done beautifully and it truly deserved the academy award for best sound. Songs such as hold my hand by Lady Gaga as well as I ain't worried by OneRepublic are wonderfully fit into the film. Even the screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer is done splendidly.

Overall, Top Gun Maverick is a rare example of when a sequel is superior to the original. It's one of the best movies of Tom cruise as well as the best movie of the summer of 2022.

Godzilla (I) (1998)
3/10
Godzilla by name only.
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What was the point of making a Godzilla remake if he wasn't going to be respected. This movie presents Godzilla in so many wrong levels. For example, unlike the Godzilla in the toho trilogies who was so fearless and willing to take on any opposition without any hesitation, this Godzilla(zilla actually) runs away whenever he's confronted and only fights when he's cornered. Also most of the destruction to New York city(the main setting of the film) is not caused by him but by the military who are so unbelievably bad in hitting their targets and instead strike iconic landmarks and buildings instead. This Godzilla also looks more like an iguana. Other problems include how is he able to hide in a major city without being detected, how is he able to reproduce asexually and how is his heat signature colder than the buildings.

Also the acting & directing of the film is also bad. Matthew Broderick plays a boring hero & Mario Pitillo's performance as Audrey is so poor. Why is it raining continuously throughout the film? Clearly this movie has zero respect to the original Godzilla.

For the redeeming highlights, I think Jean Reno plays a quite good character who undertakes a dangerous task to stop the threat and is willing to clean up his country's mess(France was the nation that conducted a nuclear test in the pacific causing zilla to exist in the first place). I also felt zilla's death in the end was very sad and his attempts to revive his young after they perished were heart wrenching.

Overall, this movie could have been fine if it wasn't based on Godzilla. However it's still a bad film that took the god out of zilla with poor acting, lame story and bad direction.

The epic conclusion of the infinity saga but not better than infinity war
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In the last film, the main villain thanos won and fulfilled his main goal of wiping out half of all life in the universe through six infinity stones which resulted in also half of all heroes turning to dust but ironically sparing the original six avengers. He then retires to a far-off planet and gets rid of the stones only to be ambushed and killed by the surviving avengers. And 5 years later, when all hope seemed lost, a surviving hero thought to be among the vanished, plots a new plan and they embark on a mission to undo the villain's work.

Directed once again by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, Avengers endgame is the ultimate conclusion of the original team from the first avengers movie. It brings all heroes together from previous films into an ultimate epic battle against the main villain and his army. In Infinity war, the stakes were getting higher and higher as thanos began to gradually get all the six stones, whereas in endgame, there isn't much for the heroes to lose until thanos from 2014 suddenly arrives just as they finished undoing the snap and ultimately have to battle him again.

Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson as the original six avengers are all phenomenal in this film. They have excellent chemistry and are willing to put aside their old feuds to undo a tragic event that affected the whole universe. Robert and Scarlett particularly as Tony & Nat respectively are so good in portraying their characters that the emotional weight is felt when they sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the universe(Nat sacrificing herself so clint can get the soul stones & Tony using the six stones to erase Thanos & his army). Endgame provides a satisfying conclusion to the characters that helped start the MCU.

Josh Brolin is once again phenomenal as Thanos. In this film, Thanos is different. In infinity war, Thanos is more humanised and doesn't kill unless he has too. He was also merciful and while he makes sure the snap is at random, he does make a few exceptions(Notably Tony and Thor). However in endgame, his personality is similar to that of his comic book counterpart. When he learns about what the heroes are trying to do, he plots a new plan to come into their timeline, destroy them all & then use the stones to destroy the universe and make a new grateful one. Thanos in endgame is far more ruthless and doesn't hold back as he is now willing to eliminate any opposition that stands his way unlike infinity war where he just throws them out of his way.

The visual effects are also stunning in this film and it surely did deserve any Oscar nomination for it though it should have gotten a few more nominations. The action sequences such as the battle of earth are among the greatest battles in cinematic history while quotes such as I am iron man, I am Inevitable and Avengers assemble are some of the greatest quotes in a superhero film.

Now for the main issues, I think Endgame saturation was quite bad. For example, Nebula doesn't have that much screen time, Natasha doesn't get any memorial for her sacrifice & war machine doesn't do that much except for helping the surviving team hunt thanos down, getting the power stone from Morag as well as contributing in the final battle. Even the film doesn't really explain how captain America returned the stones in their physical form.

Overall while endgame was predictable unlike infinity war, it's still one of the greatest superhero films in cinema and satisfying conclusion to the original team that started the MCU.

Jurassic Park (1993)
9/10
A Dino classic
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Jurassic park is a 1993 science fiction film directed by gifted filmmaker Steven Spielberg and starring Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum, Laura dean and late actor Richard Attenborough as well Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazello, BD Wong and Samuel L Jackson based on the novel written by Michael Crayton . The film revolves around a park in a far-off island where successfully cloned dinosaurs roam around. A millionaire(John Hammond played by Richard Attenborough) invites a group of professionals(Alan grant(A paleontologist), Ian Malcolm(A mathematician) and Ellie Sattler) as well as Hammond's grandchildren to tour the park. However, a breakdown of the island's Security system causes the creatures to escape and cause chaos in the island.

What I find the most fascinating about the breakthrough in technology. The special effects are so gorgeous that the dinosaurs such as the Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptors look so real. Sam Neil, Richard Attenborough, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dean play their characters very well. Also Wayne Night plays an effective villain as Dennis Nedry. The music is also very well down and really suits the film very well.

The action sequences are very effective in this film such as the t rex chasing down a jeep, Alan, lex and Tim running through a herd of Gallimimus and ofc the infamous kitchen battle with the raptors in the visitor center before the t rex shows up. But the most beautiful scene is this film is when the main characters encounter the Brachiosaurus.

Although Jurassic Park does have some unrealistic science, it doesn't matter coz it has a great story, a great cast, gorgeous visual effects, excellent music, sound design and direction.

Quite a disappointing sequel but ok
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The lost world Jurassic Park is a sequel to the first Jurassic park film once again directed by Steven Spielberg. Now, the first Jurassic Park was a masterpiece. It had splendid special effects, a good story, likeable characters, good music, good acting and originality. So after the success of the first film, steven persuaded Michael Crichton to write another novel called the lost world.

While much of the chaos in the first film was caused by the bad guys, the main issue in this film the characters(good and bad) are both foolish and reckless. Sarah carries her jacket with the baby t'rex blood despite the fact the tyrannosaurus parents can track it down, Kelly able to subdue a raptor through gymnastics which is dumb, Burke getting spooked by a milk snake leading him to be eaten by the t rex and Ludlow bringing the buck t rex to San Diego causing it to rampage there.

Despite this, just like the first film, the film's visual effects are once again great. Also the way the film explores a t rex's parenting behavior is interesting. It also has some solid action sequences(such as the San Diego rampage by the buck).

Overall, the lost world is many ways inferior to the first film but despite this, it's not a bad sequel and just a good one. I thought it could have been a lot better.

Titanic (1997)
10/10
A cinematic epic
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Titanic is a film brought by crafted film-maker James Cameron and stars gifted actor Leonardo DiCaprio and talented actress Kate Winslet. It's a true masterpiece that stays true to the real tragedy in 1912 even if it involves some fictional elements. While a jack and Rose relationship didn't happen on the real titanic(and would have certainly not happen due to strict class segregation), their relationship is still beautiful and extremely emotional. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are both phenomenal in their performances as Jack and Rose respectively and there couldn't have been any other actor and actress who could have played those characters better than Leo and Kate did. Even Gloria Stuart portrays Old Rose very well.

Billy Zane also plays a great villain as Cal Hockley. As the son of a steel tycoon millionaire, he goes from a gentlemen to a madman when he discovers rose's love for jack and a desperate person who wants to save his own skin and not caring for others the moment he realises the situation is getting serious.

The visual effects are stunning. James Cameron has managed to bring the Iconic Ocean liner the titanic back to life in screen and make it look so real. The effects are futuristic even by 1997 standards. The song My heart will go on by Celine Dion really fits the movie very well. The direction by James is also beautifully crafted and the cinematography is also well done.

The emotional depth is felt as well through jack succumbing to the effects of hypertomia but saving rose in the process to the deaths of over 1500 people in the ship. The rest of the cast do perform their roles well.

While there are a few historical inaccuracies in the film, the movie is still beautifully made.

The franchise has already run its course.
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Alright the final instalment of the Jurassic park franchise. Jurassic world dominion is the third instalment of the Jurassic world trilogy as well as the sixth in the Jurassic park trilogy, directed once again by Colin Trevorrow and once again starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong, Isabella Sermon, Omar Sy & also brings back old actors such as Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum and Laura dean as well as new actors DaWanda wise and Campbell Scott(replacing Cameron Thor).

The movie takes place 4 years after isla Nublar was destroyed, the dinosaurs now roam free in the world & are invasive species. At the same time, a new bigger problem emerges from genetically engineered locusts from a company named biosyn.

Now, while in the trailer the film looks quite exciting, this movie in the whole run is extremely disappointing in many levels. I was hoping they focus more on the dinosaurs roaming free in our world but instead they focus on these locusts. What's with the locusts?. I came here for the dinosaurs not genetically engineered insects. The chemistry between Owen & Claire is flat. Blue, the main dinosaur hero in the trilogy, who was a central character in the first Jurassic world & fallen kingdom, barely has any screen time & is only in the beginning and ending of the film while her daughter beta which she reproduced herself gets some screen time. Even Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum & Laura dean(the three main stars of the original trilogy) can't save the film.

The action sequences like previous films are memorable such as the motorcycle chase in Malta, the scene where the main characters face off against the g rex & lastly when the G rex confronts the therizino & t rex. Also a few scenes are heartwarming such as the ending where dinosaurs start to co- exist with the modern ecosystem & humanity. Once again the visual effects are fine in this film though some certain dinosaurs are only shown in one point of the film which is disappointing.

Overall, dominion is the worst movie in the franchise and it could have been a lot better. The Franchise has indeed run its course.

A beautiful friendship about a boy and his dragon.
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How to train your dragon is about a young Viking named Hiccup whose village is under constant threat by legions of dragons. He is looked down by most people in his village including his father who is the chief. Everyone assumes dragons to be menacing creatures but when hiccup injures and encounters a night fury(a mysterious dragon), he discovers dragons are actually misunderstood and are easy to train. He then tries to find a way to bring peace to his village and dragons.

The story is very entertaining from start to finish and well executed, with decent dialogue and excellent chemistry between the characters. It's about an adolescent boy gradually making his way to adulthood.

The movie contains some awe-inspiring moments such as the flight scenes- one of the most phenomenal achievements of the film.

Jay Baruchel voices hiccup so phenomenally well that it's a combination of both comedy and heroism. Hiccup is a great analysist who can draw and study things very well, as well as being an excellent inventor who tests out his inventions and sees if there's a need for modification. Gerard Butler too voices the loud Viking Stoic the vast, a big masculine being who's the chief and hiccup's dad. Although he can be aggressive at times, he can also sound warm and sorrowful.

Toothless too is beautifully animated. Although a shy and solitary individual in the beginning of the film, his curiosity soon catches up with hiccup and soon the two gradually begin a very close friendship with each other. The other characters as well as dragons are also given personalities and have magnificent body structures and facial expressions.

While how to train your dragon may not be the best animated movie of 2010(that honor goes to toy story 3), it still a very decent animated movie with a great cast, brilliant animation, a good story, splendid visual effects and a fitting score that suits the movie very well.

Elvis (2022)

Austin Butler is just brilliant as Elvis
5 May 2023
Elvis is a biopic about the life of king of rock n roll singer Elvis Presley under the management of colonel tom parker. Directed by prominent filmmaker Baz Luhrmann(Australia, Moulin Rouge & the great Gatsby) and staring Austin Butler as Elvis, Tom hanks as Tom and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla.

First off, I would like to say Austin was an excellent choice to play Elvis. He portrays Elvis so well that it looks like he temporarily brought Elvis back to life. The musical sequences of the film are also done beautifully and the songs are wonderfully recreated (If I can dream, Suspicious minds). The setting is wonderfully made to make it look like 50s Memphis. The costumes are well created as well as the cinematography & Baz's direction. Even Olivia gives a splendid performance as Priscilla.

However, the film does have some few historical inaccuracies & tom hank's performance as the Colonel is polarizing and his accent is quite terrible. Despite this, Elvis is one of the best movies of the summer of 2022 but not as great as Top Gun Maverick was.

The Good Son (1993)
5/10
Evil Kevin McCallister
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Many would be familiar with Macaulay Culkin from home alone. After completing his part in the home alone trilogy, he stared alongside actors Elijah wood, his sister, Wendy Crewson in this film called the good son directed by Joseph Ruben. In stark contrast to his mischievous, good natured & comedic character Kevin Macalister in home alone, in this film, his character named Henry Evans is a psychopathic, cold blooded, heartless kid who takes joy in harming others and sees himself above everyone else.

The film revolves around a young boy named Mark(played by Elijah wood) after losing his mother going to visit his cousin's family in Maine while his dad goes on a business trip overseas. While he initially gets along with his cousin Henry, he soon starts to realise that his cousin is an evil and dangerous kid who plots to kill his family & mark. He then tries to warn everyone about henry's true nature and tries to stop him from committing more harm.

Now the question is why is Henry Evans, who comes from a decent & nice family with good living conditions at home, a psychopath who takes delight in harming others. Is it jealousy(that was the reason he killed his baby brother before the film takes place) or is it is due to the fact he suddenly enjoyed harming others. He also disregards his health by smoking cigarettes.

A few of the scenes in this film don't make any sense. How come nobody in the highway noticed henry & mark at the top with the dummy when they were at full view and seeing henry throwing the dummy at the road causing a pileup. It's not mentioned in the investigation later on. How come henry and mark who are young boys allowed to travel across the whole island without any guardian. How come nobody in the ice rink see henry throwing Connie into the restricted area of the frozen lake. Why don't any of the adults take mark seriously when he warns them about henry. Also why does mark question the choice Susan (played by Wendy Crewson) made at the ending of the film when she finally realizes henry is too dangerous to live and mark was right at the cliff henry lured her too. She finally drops henry and saves mark. This was no easy choice for any parent to make & she would take a lot of time to recover from this ordeal.

I also felt Culkin was too young & innocent at the time to play such an evil character. Despite this, I thought Macaulay played an excellent villain & Elijah played a likeable hero. Still however, this is not one of the best films of Macaulay Culkin & Elijah Wood.

Jurassic World- A quite enjoyable sequel
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Jurassic world is a film directed by Colin Trevorrow & stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Irrfan khan, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson and brings back BD Wong.

It's the fourth instalment in the Jurassic park film franchise and first in the Jurassic world trilogy. Set 22 years after Jurassic park on the same fictional island, a new successful theme park has been operating for years bringing john Hammond's dream into fruition. However, chaos emerges when a hybrid dinosaur escapes it's enclosure and goes on a rampage leading to the park's managers and security to stop it.

Now, for most part, Jurassic world is actually a very enjoyable sequel. Unlike like the last two sequels of Jurassic park which I didn't really enjoy(The lost world was ok while JP3 was trash), this is actually another great addition in the Jurassic park franchise though it is still not as good as the first Jurassic park movie was. The action sequences are breath taking & the new dinosaur(Indominus rex) is formidable villain with an interesting backstory. Chris Pratt who is Owen Grady, a raptor trainer, plays a decent action hero. Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing is sometimes tolerable but a few times dumb and annoying. Nevertheless, she still is effective in playing her character. The musical score is also quite decent and so are the special effects.

One of the few major issues of this film is that many times, the characters are dumb(a problem in most Jurassic sequels) and often take disastrous actions which only makes the chaos much worse(Ex 1) Claire going outside rather than immediately calling the control room in the enclosure, 2) Owen and the two security guards running for the main door when they could just get out through the gate which one of them has access to leading the two security guards to be killed by the I rex except Owen & ofc the most outrageous scene is Claire outrunning a T rex with high heels). But then again, the movie wouldn't have been thrilling if that actually happened.

While Jurassic world may not better than the first movie was, it's still a worthy sequel and a fun action paced monster film.

Do watch it if you like the Jurassic park franchise.

A terrific sci-fi film
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
One thing I have to admire about independence day is it's visual effects which are jaw dropping such as The mothership, the city destroyers, the way the city destroyers just erase iconic landmarks and cities(LA, New York and Washington DC), the aliens themselves as well as their personal battle ships. Also the film contains engaging action sequences such as the first assault against the aliens over the ruins of LA, will smith's character on a jet fighting any enemy alien spacecraft in the grand canyon, the president(Bill pullman) confronting a captured alien and lastly the final assault against the city destroyer between human forces and aliens near area 51 as well as Jeff's character & will's character in a captured alien spacecraft deploying the nuke in the mothership and then escaping it before it destroys the mothership. Even area 51 in the film looks more interesting & has a very interesting history. Even a few of the film's quotes such as today we celebrate our independence day(by the president) & Hello boys, I am back(by Russel case) are memorable.

However, the film contains a mash of elements from other alien invasion movies and American supremacy. Also, sometimes the characters can be quite annoying and the dialogue was quite weak. Despite this, Independence Day proves Roland Emmerich can make a terrific blockbuster.

A massively dull sequel.
5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I get started with this film. This is one of the worst sequels ever in a franchise. There are so many major plot holes in this film. Plot holes that don't make sense. Let's list down 10 major plot holes.

1. The decepticon Barricade somehow surviving the battle of Chicago from Dark of the moon?

2. Cybertron being smaller than smaller than earth when in the third film it was much larger.

3. Why are the dinobots behaving as pets in this film when they were brave warriors in the last film. Also why are there only two left?

4. If earth was Unicorn, why it didn't react to cybertron's presence in the third film?

5. How did Megatron go from Galvatron to Megatron back?

6. In the first film, the autobots mentioned that they learned English through world wide web yet the knights in this film can perfectly speak English in the Arthur era.

7. Why did Bumblebee participate in WW2?

8. Why is Chicago still a ruined city in this film when it was rebuilt in Age of extinction?

9. Where was Quintessa in the third film?

10. How was cade able to stop a robot with a small sword when the robot had a much bigger sword? It makes zero sense.

Also the acting in this film is so horrendous. Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Laura haddock and Josh Duhamel are unconvincing in this film. The direction too is awful. Like the previous sequel, the film is also way too long. The action sequences are boring in this film and the climax too is boring. The only good thing about this film is the voice performances of the actors playing the robots. But that still doesn't save the film. Glad the transformers franchise directed by Bay is over.

Air Force One (1997)

Air Force one flys high
24 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Made in the aftermath of the Cold War, Marshall after ousting the terrorist government of radek makes a new policy promising no negotiation with terrorists, which is put into test once his plane Air Force one is hijacked in air while flying home and has to retake his plane before things go bad.

The film is a nonstop thrill ride with decent action sequences and the cast play their characters really well.

Harrison ford is convincing & phenomenal president who is the action hero who gradually makes his way by taking out the bad guys and retaking his plane.

Gary Oldman is excellent as the films main antagonist who won't hesitate to murder anyone to ensure his demands are met. His character is so ruthless that we don't feel any remorse once he is defeated.

Glenn close also plays an effective vice president who keeps calm throughout the entire situation and refuses to make risky decisions.

The sound of this film is beautiful and jerry goldsmith soundtrack really suits the film well. Wolfgang Peterson also directs the movie well.

However the movie contains many reality flaws and a few bad special effects(such as the plane crash at the end). Also why does Gibbs(the rogue secret agent) betray Marshall and allow the bad guys to take over Air Force one? What was exactly his motivation for doing so?

Despite this, Air Force one is still one of the best die hard rip offs thanks to Gary old man and Harrison ford performances alongside a great cast, excellent direction, sound and decent soundtrack.

Face/Off (1997)

An epic showdown
24 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Face/off is one of the best action movies of the 1990s.

Both Nicolas cage and John Travolta deliver phenomenal performances. It's interesting to see the shift in their characters personalities once the face swap is done, which turns Johns character from a kind and devoted father and agent to a cold hearted and evil man while turning Nic's character from a maniacal and destructive terrorist to a weak and struggling man. John woo also gives excellent direction. The story is great from start to finish about a police agent and terrorist switching faces causing a lot of tension leading to an interesting climax. The sound effects too are mind blowing in the film.

While the film does have a few cheesy moments(like the villains death in the end), it's still one of the best action movies ever and one of the best of Nicolas cage and John Travolta career.

Was a sequel needed?
24 April 2023
The first Independence Day was a great science fiction movie with groundbreaking visual effects and action sequences. Is the sequel however great?

No.

The sequel however doesn't hold up to the original. The new characters are boring with little prominence , some of the old characters are killed off(while another few are missing with little explanation), the action sequences are poor carbon copies of the original and not thrilling, the direction is poor and even the visual effects that made the original great are bad in this sequel.

Overall this movie shouldn't have been made without will smith.
