Heartstopper (2022)
I loved every minute of it
I had been looking for queer stories that are cheesy and romantic and funny. Most queer stories until recently have been making me cry tears of sadness, because the world is so harsh to LGBTQ people. This one, however, made me cry tears of joy.
It does not sugar coat the world we live in, but it believes in a bright future for queer people, and that love is possible and beautiful.
I love this show. The world needs more queer media like this.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
I loved almost everything about this.
I did not pay 30$ in advance to see this, so maybe my expectations were not as high as others. But I was positively surprised by this movie.
First off, the animation is gorgeous, hands down.
Secondly, I like the characters. Some of them are not that developed (honestly, that is normal for a movie), but I find both Raya and Namari to be very relatable and I really like Sisu.
The word-building, while not the most original, was understandable and beautiful.
The plot, while not completely surprising was interesting, and I really enjoyed the message, even if it was not subtle (it is a kid's movie though, so I can forgive that). Same goes for the humour.
What I adored most of all were the emotional moments. They are extremely well done, this movie had me in tears multiple times.
I know people are giving the movie a hard time for being a bit derivative of Avatar the Last Airbender. I am not saying that it isn't. But I still found the characters to be quite different, and while the world looks quite similar, the plot and story not.
In conclusion, this is a great movie, I loved almost every second of it.
Miwosch do kwadratu (2021)
Typical Cinderella Movie
This movie is a very typical Cinderella story. You know what is going to happen, the story will not surprise you. The characters are shallow, the acting is not great. But if you like that Cinderella stuff, you might just find a guilty pleasure in this one.
The Duchess (2008)
Great movie - apart from the framing of Georgina Spencer
This movie is very well done. The acting is superbe, the story is heart wrenching, the costumes are dazzling. I love it. Except that the historical figure of Georgina Spencer is diminished by this movie. Here is what I mean: multiple characters claim, that Georgina has a lot of influence in society, that she has a talent of directing attention towards things that are important to her., and she uses that power to make political changes. Yet, we never really see her doing that. If you make a movie about an influencial figure, show us how she was influencial.
However, the most egregious treatment of the character of Georgina Spencer was the ending. The ending is framed as, if not happy, then not at least not sad. She plays with her children and she gets along with Bess. This pretend happy ending glosses over the terrible things Georgina has to endure for the rest of her life. After all, she stays with the man who raped and abused her. She stays in the loveless marriage, because she was blackmailed by her husband. That is not a happy ending. So don't frame it that way!
