The Job (2001)
The Network TV Idiots Strike Again, but not the way you think.
I hate network TV idiots. The Job is one of the most entertaining TV series ever created, but the idiots pulled it just as it really got going. Denis Leary is hilarious! This series was a great platform for Denis Leary to play the p***ed off guy he does so well (probably 'cause it isn't acting, it's how he really is). The supporting cast was great. I laughed myself sick during every episode. Fortunately for me, I was smart enough to record them, so that I can actually watch them again. The show didn't run long enough to get syndicated release (of course, I'm making an assumption), so if you didn't see it when it ran, you may never get a chance to do so. It's just a shame.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Not perfect, but a great likeness.
Having read the books several times, as I always do before seeing any movie made after a well-known book, I thoroughly enjoyed this representation. The second time I saw it I tried to think of just the movie, without comparing it to the book. Clearly, this a difficult task, because it's not easy to just forget what you know. I think I enjoyed the movie even more the second time, though I can't say for sure that it was for that reason.
As any avid reader will tell you, movies always omit things from the books. However, everyone will see certain details as being more or less significant, and therefore be more or less satisfied with the way the movie turns out.
The omitted portions and details seemed well-chosen, with one exception: I would have liked to see Hermione solve Professor Snape's logic puzzle with the seven bottles. I thought Hagrid should have been even larger than he was, though Robbie Coltrane played the role perfectly. All in all it was a very entertaining movie that did a pretty good job of conveying the story I'd already read.
Training Day (2001)
Solid
I just kept thinking, "How could Jake (Ethan Hawke) even survive so much in one day?" This was an excellent film. Not without its weaknesses, but well-acted and very vivid in its depiction of the undercover narc scene in the LAPD. I don't know how accurate it is, but it makes me wonder about the dirty cops that are out there.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
A brilliant mix of action, acting, & plot!
Yun-Fat Chow is even better in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon than he was in The Replacement Killers and The Corruptor. The special effects were great, though I have seen better. I suppose I can't argue with Gladiator receiving the Best Picture Oscar, but I would have given it to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
