The Remaining (2014)
Disguised as Horror, But It's Religious Propaganda
'The Remaining' caught me completely off-guard with its heavy-handed religious messaging. It's less of a horror film and more of an unapologetic sermon about the rapture. The movie wastes no time in diving into its preachy narrative, complete with scenes like a plane crash caused by the sudden disappearance of God's 'chosen ones'.
This isn't just a subtle theme; it's the core of the movie, and frankly, it's overbearing. I'm all for creative freedom, but where's the heads-up? We get warnings for violence, nudity, and strong language, so why not for intense religious content? It's only fair to give viewers a chance to decide if they're up for this kind of material.
In short, if you're after a horror flick, you might want to skip this one. 'The Remaining' is more about hammering home a religious point than delivering genuine scares or a compelling story. A bit more horror and a lot less preaching would have been greatly appreciated.
How It Ends (2018)
Would have been a solid 7 if there was an ending...
Nothing against some cliffhangers or open ends, but cut to credits 10 seconds after they narrowly escaped another killer event? You gotta be kidding me...
The movie build tension very well, as you constantly are wondering: "What caused all of this?" "What's up with those Earthquakes?" "Why did the train derail?" "Why did the military plane just crashland into the middle of nowhere?"
None of those get answered and then it just cuts to the credits. Seriously, I thought I hit the skip button or something and rewinded cause I thougt maybe they just died. Wouldn't be a great ending, but an ending after all. Instead we just see them escaping what looks like a massiv pyroclastic flow by a few meters, driving off and then cut to credits...
What the heck is this?
I cannot say it any differently, I feel cheated.
The Open House (2018)
Enjoyable... and then the End...
I have to say I really liked the movie about 85% through it's runtime. It had some really got classic horror stuff without using the supernatural "There's a ghost in my house!" trope. We got a nice backstory, some eyecandy and a weird neighbour, that wasn't really doing anything to further the plot.
Then, finally the villain of the movie steps out of the dark and faces our protagonists... or does he?
The film leads up to this intense moment where the kid finds the friendly stranger he asked to look after them, after all the weird and creepy things happened to them while police was indifferent, with a cut throat at the wheel of his car. Almost immediately and before he has time to react he gets knocked out by the killer, who pours water over him, in an attempt to slow him down I guess. He then goes upstairs, and lays next to the mom in her bed. She first doesn't notice him until she looks at some photos that were taken of her while she was asleep, turns around expecting her son to be there and freaks out when she sees the stranger in the bed.
We then wittness some torture of the tied up mother, son wakes up tries to help her hut ends up being responsible for her demise. Nonetheless he can escape to a creek where the killer catches up to him and kills him.
We then see the killer drive to another open house and that's were the freaking film just ends... We do not get to know who the killer was, why he did what he did, where the connection to the family was, if he did that before and whatever happened to the senile neighbor... Nothing. We got absolutely no freaking resolution of the events whatsoever...
I've rarely been as disappointed in the ending of a horror movie as I was with this... You could oiterally stop watching in the middle and you'd know about the same about what happened and why as if you watched till the end.
What a waste. A joke.
Interceptor (2022)
Nothing special
If you like silly action foicks, this might kill an hour for you. It's nothing to come back to though.
Some plotlines are utterly ridiculous and the fight scenes will make you scream at your screen at times (not in a supportive way).
There's just to much things tgat are too far out to make you accept them and the weird comment of the protagonist towards the bad guy to "stop mansplaning" is just offensive and not waranted. The film tries to portrait a female hero in all the wrong ways. I don't care about the gender of my action heroes, but keep them believable, at least somewhat. I don't wanna see a female main role suceeding simply because she's a female. I want them to grow with their challenges and overcome their own shortcommings to rise to the occasion.
Nothing of that happens here. She just deals with her sexual abuse by a higher up as more of a side note that doesn't really add to her character. At no point was her overcomming the secual abuse relevant to the plot as all of that happened prior to the plot. Her sidekick was instantly supportive of her, she instantly defended herself and the control room vs a gang of physically superior terrorists with no real struggle and thats how it all continues. There are the usuall blowbacks that she and Rahul overcome in the course of the movie time and time again.
Give us a female lead that has to redeem herself, that is relatable. Let us cheer for her while she tries to let go of her flaws in order to save the day. We don't want to see the perfect female star that was mocked by some idiots while she already brought her abuser to a fall. We want to see real humans with real flaws. Flaws that they overcome during the events of the film. Humans that struggle, find new strength by changing their previously held view points that were holding them back. In short: we don't want the caricature of a female hero, we want a female hero.
Back to the drawing board with this one.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
Beautiful...
I'm not sure I ever cried for the end of a show, but this one just has a special place in my heart. The Music, the jokes, the mysteries and the overall massage that you can make a difference in this world even if everything is trying to stop you. If you have friends and family by your side, not even an evil and selfish God is gonna stop you and you will make earth a better place.
Fitting Ending, did not expect it and I'm blown away. Thanks for 15 Years of great entertainment and inspiration.

Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020)
Narration horrible, tonns of pseudoscientific whooo
The first Apple TV+ documentary I didn't finish. The Narration (watched it in German) is hideous, monotone and his pronunciation is overall very weird. Never liked this Narrators style but here it destroys every little piece if credibility the movie has left. It seams stretched at point where we are shown scenes from deep impact or the Last days of the dinosaurs, when at other points the narrator tells us, that what followed was so complicated, that they wont torture us with it.
That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in a documentary. A format dedicated to advance knowledge and share information.
Instead of experts, we are confronted with jazz musicians tht kinda hunt for meteor dust as a hobby. It's filled with religious nonsense much more than it is filled with actual, scientific research and findings.
The topic could have been amazing and I was excited when I saw it, as I'm a big fan of cosmology and meteorites are fascinating to me. Having watched Tiny Worlds and Elephant queen, I expected way more from this and was absolutely crushed by what was shown to me. I would award it 1 Star, wouldn't it be for some brief momenta of actual scientific information and beatiful images from Antarctica.
I wouldn't recommend this to any one with prior knwoledge or interest in the field and would encourage everyone else to take the message in this documentary with a grain of salt. There are other documentaries that do a far better job than this, which is unfortunate.
And please, never have us sit through this narrator again. It's definitely not a skill he has.
