Carry on Girls (1973)
Inspiration for Fawlty Towers?
Was the hotel reception scene the inspiration for Fawlty Towers
I stopped on this film when flitting through channels, the scene was of the beauty contest women in the reception of a hotel. It was Fawlty Towers reception. Joan Sims's character was the female Basil on reception and at one point threw something, room keys I think, across the reception.
There was a "retired major type" walking through the crowd in reception. In the dining room, just like Fawlty Towers, there's a lady sitting at a table, but just the one whereas with Fawlty Towers it was always two.
This was released in 1973 and FT first appeared in 1975. Very close.
Man About the House: One More for the Pot (1976)
Robin using a smart phone?
Robin sits at the kitchen table using what looks like, for a moment, a smart phone. He tells Jo what the square root of 123 is. It's the 70s of course and pocket calculators were the thing to amuse yourself with. Ask me a question Robin says to Jo. What's the capital of Nicaragua? It doesn't do geography he says. Give it another 20 or 30 years Robin and that calculator becomes a smart phone with everything at your fingertips.
Downton Abbey: Episode #6.4 (2015)
Next time trailer scene changes slightly
In the next time trailer at the end, Lord Grantham says "Edith has a date" and Lady Edith replies "No I don't" and she says it very demurely, but in the actual scene in Episode #6.5 (2015) she says it slightly differently. Spot the nuance.
Frasier: Dark Side of the Moon (2000)
The Simon character
I watched Frasier for the first time during lockdown, a repeat run, and the only character that spoiled it for me was Daphne's brother Simon, who first appears in this episode. Did he fail his audition for The Simpsons?
Now watching a second repeat run and nothing's changed but I suppose there are viewers who like the character.
Maybe if there's a third repeat run I will get to like him
Update:
and that's a no
and no again
and now I fast forward through any scenes with him in it.
Frasier: The Fight Before Christmas (1999)
Favourite Roz moment
One of my many favourite Roz moments is in this episode when Daphne says to her 'you know what happens when you say no to a guy?' Roz says 'yes sure' but she obviously is not too sure.

This episode sees Vance and Fornell go to London - hilarious
When we first see them in 'London' Fornell is sitting in a stationary black cab and Vance is outside the cab, a few feet from a red telephone box. In the background is Big Ben and we hear it too. A man walks up to Vance and speaks in code and Fornell asks if he's from MI6. The man is wearing a trench coat so he must be MI6. He repeats the code phrase to Vance who provides the correct answer and a package is passed to Vance and trench coat man walks away.
In the background we see white vans, black cabs and red buses
Our next glimpse of London is a pub called the Whip & Carriage and, in case we're in any doubt, the hanging sign outside has London on it, at the top where the brewery's name usually is. As they go into the pub an Old English sheepdog runs out the door (a German Shepherd may have confused American viewers). Fornell describes it as a traditional pub with charming locals
Inside is filled with 'locals'. Are any of them playing dominoes? if not, they missed a trick there. An accordion can be heard - why?
Vance & Fornell tell the landlord they need to speak to his niece and he drives them to the cottage where she is staying. The cottage is "off the grid" and in case you're in any doubt as to it being in the UK there are sheep grazing in the garden. Yes, sheep in the garden. Beyond the garden there are green and British looking fields
Later the sheep prove to be useful guard dogs. We have clever sheep in the UK
The episode is worth watching for the humour provided by the tongue-in-cheek fake UK trip. The humour has to be intentional doesn't it?
