Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Yes but no but yes but no but yeah...
So much promise, too much stupidity,
Perhaps the movie was trying to entertain the younger generation. But, if it was, the director should have remembered, that the originals did that perfectly without the cheese.
The scary and ominous bits were great, the nostalgia was there, the action worked, the big bad was cool but the idea of a fire master was pure junk.
I dig the new Ghostbusters movies and I hope we get more, but please, steer away from the cheese!!!
If this had been serious with a few comic lines/moments scattered like frosting it would have been great. But, it focused too much on trying to be comedy.
So... yeah, but no. Thanks for another Ghostbusters film, because I love the franchise, but this could have been a heap better.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
Entertaining but eye rolling in parts
I found the movie entertained throughout, and surely that's the main objective if film. However, there were moments where the dramatic bits just jarred a little. It crossed that line where dramatic turns to cheese just a few too many times.
However, when the movie ended, it left me yearning for more of the DV universe we love to hate and knowing that there was no more coming left me in it's current state left me empty.
I do find the trend of defeating an overarching BIG bad in one hit at the big reveal a little of an anti climax. It kinda under delivers on the big threat.
But, I enjoyed the character development, the humour and the redemption arches. Writing could have been better and I found some of the special effects, although beautiful to be a bit silly.
Fallout (2024)
YES! YES! YES! AND YES AGAIN!
Brilliant series. Binged all 8 episodes, and I'm still hungry for more.
I loved the characters, the intrigue, the storyline, the sets, the action, the special effects, the actors, the script, the twists.
I loved the ending, the beginning and everything that happened in the middle.
I loved the soundtrack, the paradoxical music and the paradoxical societies.
I loved the level of gore, the humour found in it and the shock value when it was needed.
I loved the creatures, the monsters and the back stories. I loved how fleshed out everyone's character was.
I loved that 8 episodes flashed past, even though it accounted for hours of my life.
I loved the fight for survival even down to the small things like thirst, hunger and betrayal.
I loved the progression from innocence through to adulthood.
I feel completely satisfied with season 1, and season 2 cannot come fast enough. Amazing television. Bravo!!! I'm tempted to give my telly a standing ovation.
I now have two favourite game to TV adaptations. This and The Last of Us.
Damsel (2024)
A thoroughly entertaining movie
I found the film thoroughly entertaining. Yeah, it didn't dig into real life, societal dilemmas, delve into politics or try to cleverly unveil a deep moral of the story trying to change humanity's viewpoint on any current poignant news story... but not every movie has to.
The acting was great, the visuals good enough to believe and the characters likeable and hated. In my opinion, it did what few movies manage in the current day and that is to entertain and to allow the mind escape from the real world.
Although, the twists and turns were predictable, they were still satisfying leaving the viewer feeling sated and comforted by the end, all loose ends tied and all wrongs righted.
I would happily watch sequel after sequel if they happen.
The Lost City (2022)
Entertainment at its best!
Loved it! This is a great movie for the Gen x and the early Millennial generation. It's fun, well acted with an exciting storyline and some tongue in cheek moments.
It reminds me of movies made before the critics demanded a social justice message, back when entertainment was just entertainment.
I loved the cast, Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum worked so well together. They were sexy, intelligent, funny, and it really felt like there was chemistry between them.
The action scenes were fun, yet suited a younger audience. The ending was gripping, fulfilling and had a lovely romantic overtone.
I don't understand why this seems to have been rated so low. Yeah, it doesn't have an LGBT element, yeah, it doesn't address real life struggles, but... it doesn't have to.
Both sexes are held in high regard, both male and female have equally heroic parts to play. In my eyes, this movie was just as good as Romancing the Stone or Indiana Jones.
I would have given this 8/10 but I'm giving it 10/10 because I truly believe this movie has been hard done by by the critics... you don't get to the top 10 Netflix list unless you're popular with the public, and what's the point of a critics score unless it's to mirror what the public wants.
The ENTIRE point of a critic, is to give the public a leading edge on what's good... but if the critics are out of touch with what the public want, perhaps it's time we bin them as the gods who choose what should go onto the pedestals of greatness.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Brilliant Sci-fi action
I cannot fathom why this is being rated so badly. I found it really refreshing to have a Star War esque, movie with a few adult themes rarely seen in main stream science fiction.
Characters were all likeable and I can't wait to see where they take this next. As far as a "setting the scene" movie goes, it was brilliant! Visually epic, action packed, acting was good, storyline, although embryonic was intriguing.
I feel like this has been rated badly just because people have a bee in their bonnets with Zack Synder.
I think my only complaint would be that the ending of the movie kinda sneaked up out of nowhere. But, it still ended satisfactorily.
All in all, a whole heap better than most of the recent Star Wars movies. I really hope the negative reception on here doesn't jeopardise future movies.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Ahhhh, that's better a marvel movie that felt like Marvel
Brilliant, finally a movie that starts pulling together the confusing threads that have been laid over the past 8 years.
Just the right level of humour, action, character building. All in all, loved it.
The big bad was developed so much better than Gor the God butcherer. It wasn't all over the place like Multiverse of madness and it wasn't one long bad joke like Love and Thunder.
It felt like a marvel movie should be after so many years of being starved of them. Loved all the characters, loved the plot, loved the action, loved the clever references to other productions. YES!! Feel like my excitement for the MCU has been rekindled!
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Thoroughly entertained
I don't believe this deserves the low ratings it's been given. Loved the references to other fairytales. Thought the twists were clever and worked well. Acting was what you'd expect from a 12 rated movie of this genre. CGI was well executed and wasn't over the top. That was a very entertaining 2 hours.
Storyline works well in its job to deliver a meaningful message without being obvious. Really refreshing to get two strong Female leads without making stupid caricatures of the Male parts. Even the obvious gender stereotypes breakdown though the movie adding to the message of gender equality in a clever, "not in your face" fashion.
The world in which the story is set is rich and has so much more potential to explore and finally, I very much hope they make a sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Fun but a but of a mess
Well, it entertained but it was a bit of a chaotic mess. I know we've had these characters on our screens for years, but some character building wouldn't have gone amiss seeing as we're seeing a brand new side to some of them.
I guess if the aim was to convey "madness" through 2 hours of chaos, then it hits the nail on the head. Didn't seem to have a beginning, a middle and an end... just a middle and an end.
Morbius (2022)
It was alright.
Not brilliant like Venon 1, but still watchable. The 2nd end credit scene was a little cringeworthy.
Was Matt Smith playing homage to Lost Boys when he was calling "Michael" in the underground scene? Kinda felt that way.
I didn't develop a connection to any of the characters though, which is a shame. Best, lifelong friends pitted against each other, after a the struggles they both went through should have triggered an emotive response and I felt nothing.
But, it kept me entertained throughout and I wasnt bored at all, so 7/10 from me.
Villain (2020)
Disappointing crime never prospers
Great acting, great storyline (until the end)
The snitch twist makes no sense.
The takeaway from this isn't "crime never prospers" but instead "the policing system is flawed"
The murder at the end just adds to the disappointment and adds nothing.
Only reason I've given this a reasonable rating is for the acting. The storyline is trying to be too clever for it's own good.
