Run Rabbit Run (2023)
Dark and disappointing
This film was dark in every sense of the word - not least so much was filmed in the shadows, I almost tried to increase the brightness of my screen, thinking it was a fault with my device. And SLOW SLOW SLOW, I don't mind a story taking a while to develop but this got on my nerves. I didn't feel anything for any of the characters, except frustration. Sarah Snook's descent into madness was pretty gruelling to watch, she's a fine actor, but really the film could've told its story in half the time. I watched till the bitter end but don't really know why! I expected her to end up in a psych unit instead of just screaming from the window. And, yes, we get it - she was sorry.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Over-hyped!
Don't know how it won so many Oscars, the production and PR team must've gone into overdrive to promote this total mess of a film! The storyline is a mish-mash of every thought that every deranged person might have had in the last zillion years. It's too rushed, everyone shouts all the time. However, I shouldn't really write a review of the whole film as I didn't last the whole film. I thought having Jamie Lee Curtis might help, but oh no her character just added t9 the chaos. I suppose the best performance was when Ke Huy Quan received his Academy Award, at least he tried to make sense of it all. I only watched the film because of him.
The Reunion (2022)
Just pay attention to the reviews!
Well I thought those reviews couldn't possibly be right so I'd give it a go. I have to give the producers 10/10 for their audacity in bringing this load of garbage to the general public. How the stellar cast they assembled actually got through the whole series without giving up is anyone's guess. There was a sort of "I am Spartacus, no I am Spartacus" vibe as one by one the characters said "I killed her, no I killed her". And the coincidences that just so happened as the series went on! That's six hours of my life I'll never get back so next time I'll pay attention to the reviews. I give it an extra star for the stunning scenery.
Une mère parfaite (2021)
So what next?
SPOILERS
This was a well written drama with many twists and turns, but I couldn't believe it ended after the 4th episode with so many loose ends?
How come Anya gets away with it? Won't she be eternally scarred?
How can the defence lawyer perjure himself and get away with it?
What about Anna's friend who knows the truth?
Is a second series planned? I had to check IMDB that there were only four episodes.
AlRawabi School for Girls (2021)
An eye-opener!
For me, an older woman from the West who doesn't know much about the Middle East other than what we are fed in MSM, this was a real eye-opener. The themes are universal - bullying and revenge for bullying - but it was seeing how these young girls who are clearly rich and relatively emancipated are still bound by family honour and the patriarchy that I found powerful. Too much happens to write more, but I found it spell-binding. The acting was a bit wooden in parts and some of the characters (the spoilt bullying leader of the pack, the headmistress) were caricatures. And the subtitles were somewhat lacking in parts - that may have been Netflix rather than the production team.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Shallow, superficial, but addictive!
I'm far too old to be watching this series, it's for bright young things who are influenced by fashion, the number of Instagram followers someone has, and who's screwing who. But it's an escape from the ghastliness of a pandemic and all other world ills. The shots of Paris are fantastic - even though the script is glib and full of cliches, and everyone wears a different outfit every day - but I just couldn't stop watching it.
