Ripley (2024)
8 episode movie?
9 April 2024
Oh my. This thing just drags on and on. Yes I did see the film 'version' and even that was too much. Hollywood is taking movies, reimagining them as TV series and expecting the viewer to indulge in these dragged out experiences. Yes the black and white charm works well, vintage 60's scenery is captivating, yet the story line offers nothing to grip the viewer. I am 2 episodes in and cannot imagine enduring the remainder of the series. There is just not enough intrigue and substance to draw me to continue. It is not awful but is just not compelling.

Just like a shark on Shark Tank: for those reasons I am out.

Summer House (2017– )
Consumptive Love?
8 April 2024
I cannot help but recall how relationship analysis PsycHacks describes such behaviour. The players in this display of mental illness, self-destruction and manipulation are all apparent. Poor Carl, the enabler, needs to grow up and grow a pair. His impending doom due to the abusive, narcissist Lindsay is all too imminent if he doesn't escape. Kyle used to be so happy until he made the mistake of marriage to a petty, abusive, self-centred woman.

In this world of modern independence, where men do not need women, (and women don't need men, except for economic use), displays a last generation of desperados thinking they need a partner. Most lonely men will fold for anyone. Desperation is not sexy.

Friends take note: you can be a happy independent person, alone and sometimes lonely, until the days you grow old and eventually die. Nurture your real family and friendships. Put your energies into better things. Most marriages fail anyways. Everybody take note of this all-too-common reality, Have fun, grow up, live your life and move on from such toxicity.

French Girl (2024)
French-Canadian Girl
21 March 2024
The term French girl describes a woman originating from France. This story is of a French-Canadian girl, not a French girl. French is also a language, naturally evolved as a dialect does, from the original language from France.

QUOTE from CBC entertainment review:

The premise is simple: Gordon wants to propose to Sophie, but she gets a job offer from her ex-girlfriend Ruby (played by the stunning Vanessa Hudgens) back in Quebec City before he can seal the deal.

That means meeting Sophie's very Québécois family on their farm, while an increasingly unhinged Ruby tries to sabotage their relationship and win Sophie back.

This is the first feature for director pair James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, who also wrote the script.

It's a personal project: Both their fathers fell in love with their French Canadian mothers and moved to Quebec to start families.

Despite being first-time feature directors, the film is incredibly sharp, both in its comedy and its editing.

It hits its beats hard, and there are plenty of very funny moments.

The movie is part culture clash, part ensemble comedy, and owes a lot to Braff's experienced hand in rom-coms. As Gordon, he conjures an early Billy Crystal in his comedic timing and a bit of the bashfulness of a mid-career Grant - high praise in the rom-com world.

Queer Eye (2018– )
devolves into 'what not to wear'.
26 January 2024
Supposedly queer eye for men, the last few episodes are of women subjects. Boring. Plots to emotionally rescue guests are annoying, Jonathan's flamboyancy is simply attention-seeking antics.

From Google The how has lost its way. All six episodes (this is the shortest season yet) lack spark and surprise. There's still plenty of big transformations and revelations, but everything feels like a rehash of what we've seen before. After so many years, maybe it's Queer Eye itself that needs a makeover.

Queer Eye is one of the most heartfelt and honest shows on TV, with actual storylines, and a cast of lovable experts. However, while the show's makeover "heroes" are authentic people whose real lives are shown onscreen, not everything seen on the Netflix reality show is 100% real.

For All Mankind (2019– )
For all mankind?
13 January 2024
Private enterprise dressed up as something bringing value to humans on earth. How dishonest. Just be the private business that you are and be honest about it. You are not the saviour.

Apple Tv review quote... That so many of my friends seem to feel the same way only underlines just how many people I know (and/or follow on social media) long for a world where things had gone differently. The show's focus on a space race between the USA and USSR that never ended posits that such a space race would have led to a world where the dial was turned just a couple of clicks more toward utopianism. Nothing would have changed that much, but the show's alternate history of the late 20th century is, nevertheless, a thrilling look at an Earth that can never be.

If you are super spoiler-averse, skip over just the next paragraph, because the reveal in the series' opening sequence is a doozy, and I know many people may appreciate knowing nothing about it when they started watching.

What is with this trend of producing film and Tv in languages other than English, even without subtitles?

Quote: The Mother Tongues Award

The Mother Tongues Award is a development initiative launched by production companies Ardimages UK and Shudder Films, in association with sales agent Charades and UK distributor Curzon. The team is on the hunt for feature film projects at treatment or script stage, written by UK-based filmmakers, and set mainly in the UK, but in which the story dialogue is in a language other than English.

This can be any non-English language, whether native to the UK (including Welsh, Gaelic, Irish and BSL) or from another country. Typically, applicants will either speak the relevant language(s) themselves or have strong connections to it through their heritage or personal circumstances.

Impossible
4 January 2024
They visually promote the Bill Gates produced frankenfood called IMPOSSIBLE, which is as suspicious as BEYOND MEAT. The bias and use of the term 'plant based' is rampant.

Are they part of the agenda to get humans onto these fake foods? Many researchers are wary and continue to reinforce the consumption of animal protein.

The conclusion was full of foolish believers who assume physical ailments come from animal diets, and believers in the frankenfoods carries on. Brain washing. No evidence is non science.

"Compared to a meat-based burger, Beyond and Impossible contain roughly the same amount of saturated fat and more sodium," she says, both of which, when over-consumed, can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Too much BS
24 December 2023
I thought this was a home reno show. IInstead you get this guy droning on about his personal life, and most of his clients issues too. You barely get any content of the finished product. The rest is boring filler.

Media announcement quote: Amazon Freevee announced today that Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis will return with the first two episodes of its second season on December 6th, exclusively on Freevee in the UK, US and DE. A new episode of the 10-episode season will then be available every Wednesday. With higher stakes and even higher demands, Lewis will balance parenting, dating, and a home renovation of his own, while delivering some of the most challenging and distinctive transformations yet for some of Hollywood's favourite celebrities. The Season Two trailer and screeners are available now.

This season's roster of celebrity clients features Anthony Anderson, Cynthia Bailey, Noah Beck, Kate Bosworth, Reggie Bush, Josh Duhamel, Sara Foster, Regina Hall, Christina Ricci and Gina Rodriguez. The stars seek Lewis' impeccable design style for a plethora of projects, including reimagining an impossible kitchen, tearing a primary suite down to the studs, and creating a family backyard destination. With unexpected turns and drama at every corner, there's no shortage of laughs as Lewis and his team-Megan Weaver, Tyler Meyerkorth, Andrew Coleman, and Shane Douglas-are all-hands-on-deck to deliver every houselift.

Reacher (2022– )
Cheese
20 December 2023
The series is so cheesie that if it had a more humorous slant it could have been a great action-comedy. The gratuitous violence, amateur script, poorly developed, poorly matched characters and predictable plots all lend themselves to this type of entertainment. To have the character(s) take themselves so seriously is beyond hilarious as it is. The creative scene - shooting of the 6'-2" Ritchson as a bigger beast of a man is remarkable cinematography. I also think all these Reacher-praising reviews is a testament to America's delusion and desperate hero worship, despite all the violence it justifies, in this lost world we live in today.

Ritchson was hilarious in Blue Mountain State. Make him more fun like that guy.

Freelance (2023)
Alison Brie at her worst
29 November 2023
The John Cena character is almost believable, but thee Alison brie character just showcases idiocy; more female stereotype lunacy. Roger Ebert said it best: "Freelance" is barely a movie. Sure, it's got a budget ($40 million!), a semblance of a plot, and stars that you'll recognize, but none of it was developed beyond the bare minimum to get released on VOD and in a few theaters. It is a defiantly lazy work, a project that echoes better films when it's doing anything. The most impressive thing about Pierre Morel's film is how it takes two actors as generally likable as John Cena and Alison Brie and makes them such bland avatars for actual people that they fade into the dull background of action-comedy noise this "movie" tries to achieve.

The Hollywood Reporter's Frank Scheck wrote, "To be fair, the film directed by Sam Boyd has its amusing moments, thanks to Curtis' well-honed comic instincts. Essiedu nicely underplays as Bernard, going more for emotion than cheap laughs, and McCarthy is such a warm, engaging presence that you'll search your home for any old-looking bottle that might contain a similarly helpful genie".

Family Law (2021– )
Hateful lead character
7 May 2023
Disrespectful, rude, irresponsible personality of this snarky , nasty person makes her so hateful.

They say you have to love at least one character in a show and there isn't one in this series to align your sympathies with.

Great film footage of Vancouver, Canada locations.

So easy to dismiss this pathetic effort at a series portraying lawyers trying for family law issues. Very cancelable.

From TV Line: Let's be honest: If you tuned in to the premiere of Family Law on The CW on Sunday, it's probably 99.9% because of TV fan faves Jewel Staite and Victor Garber.

Staite is best known for Firefly, but her role/performance on the imported Canadian legal drama is more akin to her character on The L. A. Complex than sweet Kaylee. The actress stars as Abigail Bianchi, a personal injury lawyer, whom we first meet while she's passed out in her car on the side of the road. Abigail shows up late to court, visibly drunk, and pukes all over the place.

Cut to three months later, and Abigail now has to attend AA meetings and can only practice law under the supervision of a senior lawyer. Her own firm bailed on her and no one else will take a chance on her - except for one lawyer: her dad, Harry Svensson (Legends of Tomorrow's Victor Garber). But this isn't a warm and fuzzy father-daughter moment, because Harry has his own conditions for taking on Abigail, who's been estranged from her father for 30 years.

Couples Therapy (2019–2024)
Scripted garbage
1 May 2023
What a bunch of trite crap. The 'contestants' are primed and scripted to embellish this faux reality series.

New York Times filler... The show, premiering Friday at 10 p.m., is a documentary that follows four couples' sessions with Dr. Orna Guralnik over the course of several months. After 40 seconds, I was positive every couple featured on the show should break up. After all nine half-hour episodes, I'm less sure.

"You have to really want the relationship and love your partner in a way that moves you to transcend yourself," Guralnik tells one husband and wife pair. They're both deflated on her couch, positively wrung out by their endless routine of secret-keeping and resentment, of pushing each other away and then being hurt anew by the distance. While Guralnik delicately avoids answering the husband's question directly - Do you think we should give up? - her response deflates them further. They both weaken before our eyes, and it's one of the most intense, complex moments I've ever seen on TV, two people realizing simultaneously "I don't think I love you enough."

Scripted shows have of course given us plenty of insightful, probing therapists and complex, resistant-to-change patients. The power here is the reality of it all, the rawness and ridiculousness of the human condition. On the first episode, one exasperated man proudly proclaims, "I am the easiest person to deal with."

The Diplomat (II) (2023– )
TV movie material at a snail's pace
23 April 2023
Tv movie material at a snail's pace.

The series is bogged down by inter-personal difficulties amongst the characters. There is no innuendo or humour as it moves from one moment of strife to another. It could have been condensed into a TV movie, yet here is another series dragging the story out. I could barely finish the first episode as it drones on aimlessly.

Netflix claims,,, The Diplomat is one of the best politically focused series since Homeland and The Americans. With a phenomenal lead performance from Keri Russell, and smart scripts that perfectly weave in current events, this is a can't-miss series.

Hilarious
25 March 2023
Mel brooks still got it! Ignore all the haters. Tis show is original, well-written and laugh a minute comedy. It is social commentary disguised as a spoof on classic historical moments. Mel Brooks at 95 years old is just as relevant and aware of our world and has spoofed it brilantly.

At 95, the legendary Mel Brooks continues to set the standard for comedy across television, film, and the stage. Now he shares his story for the first time in "a wonderful addition to a seminal career" (San Francisco Chronicle), "infused with nostalgia and his signature hilarity" (Parade).

"I hope fans of comedy will get a kick out of the stories behind my work, and really enjoy taking this remarkable ride with me."-Mel Brooks.

Funny? Really?
4 June 2022
I am enduring the first episode, the watermelon eating segment, So far this is just silly nonsense. There is a big difference between this and truly funny. What is there to really laugh at? Brits make the best comedy but this isn't one of them. But several seasons does make it funny for some people.

A bit tragic really
4 June 2022
Some people don't appreciate what they've got. Despite the other comments this is not about marginalized Asians or any race. Most of the characters portrayed are just low-confident, shallow, and way too sensitive. Many are like this in real life, but this could benefit with at least a couple of well-adjusted individuals to balance things out.
