Date Movie (2006)
What was Alyson Hannigan thinking?
When she looked at this script was she actually thinking that this was very funny and a good movie for her followup of American Wedding? Ms. Hannigan is quite a talented actress and handles comedy and drama with equal deftness. In this film, as hard as she works (and she works pretty hard), she cannot save this bomb from destroying your will to go to the movies ever again. Take it from me, folks, the best parts of this movie are the scenes used in the previews.
This movie claims to be from 2 of the writers of Scary Movie, well I think they should have gotten the rest of the writers too; unless they were part of it and all but 2 bailed when they saw this ship sinking. Some of the highlights are: Jennifer Coolidge does a very accurate and funny Barbara Streisand, Tony Cox shows that he is the big man on campus when it comes to comedy, Meera Simhan is beautiful and funny, and Eddie Griffin was a trooper trying to put his best foot forward through a difficult situation. I got the feeling throughout the movie that Mr. Griffin was on auto pilot; not really acting or using his considerable talent but just coasting as if he knew the effort would be wasted.
Wait until the movie comes out on DVD and then get drunk before watching it because that is the only way it will ever be funny. A thorough waste of 83 minutes of my life I can never get back.
Silver City (2004)
Slow at first, but then picks up
This movie is extremely slow and boring at first. As the conspiracy plot builds it gets to be more of a thriller. It would have been a much better film if the film makers had been more concerned with telling a good story and less concerned with thinly veiled left wing conspiracies about big business, environmental pollution, and politics in an effort to take a pot shot at the current U.S. president. Considering how many famous "liberal" names are in this movie, I am surprised it never had a wider release or more success. But, if you liked Farenheit 911 you like this film because it is just as much contrived conspiracy, inaccurate in facts and anti-Bush. The ending is so over the top, tug on your heartstrings that I had to laugh more than be emotionally affected, but being a "dim witted, brainwashed" conservative, maybe I just did not get the message.
The Court Jester (1955)
A Perfect example of Danny Kaye's Work
This film is one of Danny Kaye's finest moments in what was a delightful lifetime of films. It showcases the brilliant wordplay and slapstick that Mr. Kaye had perfected to a science. The film is colorful and the performances are outstanding considering the genre. It is one of the few films that can make people of all generations laugh through its ageless "Robin Hood" adventure story.
Also take note of the beautiful Angela Landsbury (in one of her earliest roles) and Glynnis Johns who add the sparkle to this enjoyable film. Basil Rathbone handles the job of bad guy perfectly and Cecil Parker is excellent in the role of the evil king who is not really so bad.
One of Danny Kaye's best films and a must see for anyone interested in this wonderful actor's career.
