The Orville: Gently Falling Rain (2022)
Reviewing as I watch
Don't expect much at this point, but here goes...
First scene pre-open: terrible speech poorly delivered.
Annie in Spaaaaace! Ok, almost funny. Ya take whatever funny you can at this point.
No capitalism? Straight from Trek!
Yay. Always happy to see Ted Danson.
Holodeck scene. Oh wait, I can't call it that cos that's a Trek term.
Filler scenes....
Y'know what? Why go on? I used to love this show. Back when it was an affectionate send-up of Star Trek tropes, it didn't matter if it was sometimes silly or cheesy. That wasn't the point. It was about the fun. Now it's all serious. And since it inherits SO much of it's structure from Trek, now it's basically just a mediocre non-canonical Star Trek series.
If it's going to try and be a serious show now, it really has to focus on what makes it unique and apart from Trek. And the writers need to step up accordingly.
Sword of Trust (2019)
I miss Lynn Shelton so much...
A lovely small scale film with a satisfying payoff. Exactly the sort of film she excelled at. And dammit I still can't believe she's gone. She'll never make all the wonderful films she could have made over the next forty years, and I feel that loss terribly.
The Orville: Mortality Paradox (2022)
Seth forgot about the funny
Everything is pretty and shiny now, but the show has lost what made it good. It was a great affectionate send-up of the genre. Now it's just another mediocre example of the genre. This whole season has been a disappointment.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Three Thoughts
1. After being riveted by a brief shot of Michelle Yeoh watching laundry tumble in the dryer, I now believe I actually would watch her do literally anything.
2. I cannot imagine what possessed Jamie Lee Curtis to take on this film, but I am soooo glad she did!
3. This film is crazy, crazy fun!
Reminiscence (2021)
A Perfectly Adequate Film
I honestly don't understand the hate heaped on this film here. It's a perfectly adequate way to spend 90 minutes. There are Star Wars films that aren't as well realized as this. Granted, those are appropriately considered the worst of the Star Wars films, but still...
My biggest objection would be the voiceovers. Generally speaking, if your film actually needs voiceovers, then you should reconsider how you're editing it.
So final judgment, not great, but not nearly as bad as most of the reviews here would have you think. Nice way to spend 90 minutes, but you won't remember it a month from now.
Tenet (2020)
Brilliant but challenging
I've often said that any film attempting to deal with time travel in any sensible way would be extremely confusing. In this regard, Tenet is a very challenging watch. But it's also so masterfully conceived and executed that although I may be occasionally confused, in still in awe of it.
