Surf Ninjas (1993)
A funny entertaining ride
This movie is admittedly a guilty pleasure of mine and having first seen this as a child in the 90s, rewatching it in 2022 as an adult clearly shows its plot holes, silliness, and obvious comedic charm. I definitely can see how people wouldn't rate it highly, but in my honest opinion, it still holds up as a comedy that entertains. Who doesn't love martial arts, surfing, and some outrageous scenes that get you laughing. Ernie Reyes Sr and Jr, Rob Schnedier, and Kelly Hu all made this movie that much better. I give it a nostalgic 7/10.
High Fidelity (2000)
Overrated as a rom com when the main character is an annoying narcissist
I really don't understand how Cusacks character ever got in a relationship in the first place, let alone enough to have a top 5 breakups. It's really hard to root for him when he consistently thinks only of himself instead of being a genuine and kind person who would be deserving of forgiveness. The film had its moments, but overall makes me feel like it's very overrated.
Evil: E Is for Elevator (2021)
Such a gripping episode, politics aside
I can see some of the reviews being left in here are by those who wish to never see politics in the shows they view. That is understandable, if not a bit extreme, but in my view, it can be done tastefully and with class as it was in this episode. It fits with the story as opposed to existing in the episode for its own sake.
Politics aside, this episode was a wild ride. The progression with the characters and the use of the Elevator Game as the focus for this week's case was excellent. Not to spoil anything, but it was awesome the way the case was solved and the disappearances of the two youths was explained in a practical sense. I put myself in Ben's position at a certain scene in the episode, and it was a terrifying thought. I believe this show is doing a great job of building a bond between the audience and the characters as I felt invested in the outcomes and wellbeing of each of the main protagonists.
Legends of Tomorrow: The Ex-Factor (2021)
The writing needs saving
This show has its moments where you love it, the fact it doesn't take itself too seriously and you can have funny moments alongside dramatic ones. However, you can also hate it when the writing goes too heavy to onside or the other, and the quality suffers as a result. This episode felt like the movie Idiocracy in TV form. The fight scene early in the episode looked horrible and the villain was boring with little value to the plot. I really hope they fix the writing and make it legitimately interesting to the comic book fans who were here in the beginning.
The Flash: Growing Pains (2021)
Cringe is rising and quality dropping
I loved this show throughout the ups and downs, but the recent episodes leading up to this one have shown that the writing is struggling and the dialogue has gotten more cringy and corny as the scenes go on. I sincerely hope they shift towards what made the original seasons great because this "drama" heavy soap opera is getting difficult to watch. I miss my favorite comic book hero and the excitement the stories used to bring.
Kingdom (2014)
Incredibly Underrated and Wonderfully Demonstrated Performance
This show has captivated me from the first 2 episodes I saw about a year ago. Into its second season, it shows that it still has momentum and enough attention grabbing plots to keep its viewers entertained for years to come. I absolutely love when a series can have a group of characters, all with their unique personalities and issues that come together so well that it makes for the perfect viewing experience...throw in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and you have a recipe for greatness. The cast who have been known to be in medium budget films actually work great for television and show that they can lay it all out on the line if given the proper script and direction. So many elements come into play that every episode shows a progression in the lives of each of the characters and it is fantastic. I sincerely look forward to seeing this series continue and showcase not only the excitement that is the world of Mixed Martial Arts, but also the drama that goes along with the life of a fighter and their inner circle. 9/10
