The Good Ship Murder (2023)
IT IS VERY GOOD FOR WHAT IT INTENDS TO BE!
One of the biggest problems with reviews is that sometimes people say that something is bad just because they don't like it, like, people who don't like chocolate (yes, they do exist). If you give them the best chocolate in the world they won't like it, because they don't like any kind of chocolate. The same I think happens with shows like this. If a person only likes highly intense dramas and overly complicated mysteries they will no doubt say this a bad show. But if you are like me, who also enjoys, and needs, something to relax your mind and spend an hour in a beautiful setting with a nice uncomplicated, yet quite enjoyable story, then this show is for you. My only complaint is that there are too few episodes in the season. I hope this series gets renewed for many seasons.
Haunted Mansion (2023)
TOO DARK... BUT NOT IN A GOOD WAY
This is yet ANOTHER misfire from Disney. Although the story was bland, that still could have worked if it weren't for some key problems. Let me start with what I think was the movie's biggest problem: LaKeith Stanfield. The man has ZERO comedic talent, and a movie like this requires an actor with a huge sense of comedy. Don't get me wrong, he's a good dramatic actor, but he was completely miscast in this role. Had this movie been a serious adult horror movie, he would have been a fine choice, but that wasn't the case here. I also didn't feel any chemistry between him and Rosario Dawson, who by the way, didn't give her best performance here. Owen Wilson was okay, but this wasn't his best performance either, so the best performances were from Chase Dillon and the ever reliable Danny DeVito. The other major problem is actually not exclusive to this movie, but rather a current Hollywood trend: the overly dark image. I beg you Hollywood, please try to understand, the audience in order to watch the movie, must also be able to SEE it, so please, PLEASE, stop making movies with a bleak picture. I watched this on Disney+ in Dolby Vision and most of the scenes were too dark to see. It's very hard to enjoy these films on TV, even in a properly calibrated TV at night. During the day is impossible. Is this darkness closer to reality? Possibly. Is it pleasant or even comfortable to watch? Hell, no. It's very disturbing, which reduces the capacity of enjoying the film.
Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
THIS MOVIE WAS A DREAM!
At least I hope they explain that at the beginning of Meg 3, if they ever make it. Seriously though, this movie actually seems like a dream, in the sense that one absurd thing happens after the other. Don't get me wrong, unlike many people, I REALLY enjoyed the first film. I thought it was great popcorn fun. This film, however is all over the place. Since it is a Chinese co-production, perhaps it works better for Chinese sensibilities, I don't know. It also had too many Chinese dialogs with very fast subtitles (not everyone reads fast, you know?) Technically it also feels cheaper than the previous film, specially with the CGI. That underwater walk, which by the way was a total ripoff from Underwater (2020), was also poorly made. You could see the actors were not really underwater. One other major problem was the lack of humor, which the first film had in the right measure. They tried, I know they did, but none of it was funny, AT ALL. It was just ridiculous. It should be noted that this was no fault of any of the actors, who in my opinion were all good. Some of the characters were too clichéd, specially some of the villains, but that was the writers and the director's fault. So if by any chance any of the producers of this film is reading this, please, if you decide to make Meg 3, this is what you should do: Hire the director and the writers of the first film and explain that this film was just Meiying's dream, which would be an excellent justification to bring back the beautiful Bingbing Li back.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
DEFINITELY MADE FOR THE GAMER DEMOGRAPHIC
I believe that's the main reason why so many people did not like this movie, or at least not as they did the first one, while others are claiming this is the greatest movie ever made. I kinda liked the first one, but would have liked much more if it had standard animation, the style used was interesting for a few minutes, but got old very fast. This movie is much worse in that regard. Not only the visuals are more intense, but the action is too fast, which is something that gamers are used to, but the rest of us are not. Even some of the captions were so fast that I couldn't read them. I felt so visually tired that when I hit the 1 hour mark I dozed off. The melodrama also didn't help. Movie and TV producers should realize that times have changed in more ways than one. In the past, superhero content was created mainly for kids, because adults in general didn't have much interest in them. Now those kids have grown, and guess what? Most of them still love their superheroes. So this vast amount of people who now have jobs and can afford to purchase even more comics, Blu-rays, action figures, toys, etc. Are being forgotten. Movie producers should realize that and make content for everyone and not just for one single demographic.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2023)
CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN HOW SPOCK EVEN EXISTS IN THIS?
Cause if Earth is isolated from Vulcan, then Sarek and Amanda had never met, therefore no Spock, RIGHT? Last season I thought, "FINALLY, A REAL STAR TREK SHOW!" I felt as when I was a kid watching Star Trek TOS for the first time, but now I'm beginning to worry. The only good thing about this episode was Christina Chong. Imagine if the writers had given her a good script to work with. That scene of her looking at "Kirk" sleeping was the cringiest thing I have ever seen. And by the way, PLEASE no more John Wesley. Nothing against him personally, but casting him as Kirk is akin to casting Woody Allen as Superman.
