The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (2022)
What a beautiful story
There's a lovely, deeply important core philosophy running throughout this animation. A boy and four animals go on a journey together - sharing their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. On the way they learn and grow from spending time with each other.
There's excellent voice acting luscious soundtrack and superb animation, which brings the whole thing together. This is set to be a Christmas classic along with the likes of The Snowman.
The only thing - and it'll be the parent within me - I did spend a bit too much time worrying about the young boy's core temperature!
Joking aside - everyone young and old will enjoy watching this.
Babylon 5: No Surrender, No Retreat (1997)
Excellent storytelling all round.
The main story was compelling. Great action and sets the next phase of the series up. But it was the side story with Londo and G'Kar that really shined through. Having taken a bit of a break, it's great to see these two back, interacting with each other. Londo expressing contrition is a fantastic pay off - the fruit of great story telling and great acting over the previous three plus seasons. These two are the real story of B5.
Babylon 5: Interludes and Examinations (1996)
Pivotal episode
As a first time watcher, this episode feels like the end of something and the start of something else.
The interaction with Kosh and Sheridan is excellent and the conclusion to the story between them is very fitting for a Vorlon!
Londo's arc just gets better and better. The way you're given enough rope to almost have sympathy for him, only to be reminded that underneath he's nothing but a selfish jingoist. Clever stuff.
Good to see Vir's character return to form after that terrible episode that focused on him.
The stim story perhaps dragged on a bit, without much bite. But it wraps itself up well. And it's clearly not the end for the good doctor.
Babylon 5: Sic Transit Vir (1996)
Not quite right
This is nothing against Furst's Vir. I think his character is interesting. But as a Vir focused episode, it doesn't work. The story doesn't play out quite right. And nothing fits together.
The scene where Ivanova and Sheridan pull up Vir and uncover his lies misses any of the right beats. Overall the characters feel off. And the story disjointed.
Underneath all of it is an important story about Vir and how he is different to the other Centari. But it takes quite a bit to get there.
As a first time watcher, this is a low point for season 3.
