Date Movie (2006)

Tried watching for nostalgia; didn't go well
13 August 2023
I understand what you are in for with a spoof movie and that's usually corny jokes and lame jabs. However, this film can't even begin to reach the heights of entertainment. Of course watching a 2006 movie in 2023 is going to be somewhat problematic because of the fat-shaming and sexism, but I completely put that aside. Even without the gay, fat, and period jokes, it's just a bad movie. It tries to make fun of contemporary romance comedies but it's too heavy handed. It's clear the writers were trying to focus on how to make every like a joke instead of trying to tell a story. I'm a millennial and I enjoy watching movies from my childhood, but this is one I definitely wish I had skipped.

Hilariously Inappropriate Film.
2 August 2023
After reading so many bad reviews, I knew I had to step in and defend this really funny movie. Luckily, the trailer sets the film up exactly so you know what you are in for. Is the protagonist making some questionable choices? Yes, absolutely! But it is a comedy film and not a self-help life lesson. The trick is to not take the film seriously. The main character can also be somewhat of an antihero, as well. The story line in the beginning moves fast, but it's because all of the laughs and gags occur during the main party scene where most of the events take place. I thought the acting was great and the choice of actors worked really well. If you don't think about the morals of the movie too hard, you will find yourself cackling and laughing at the hilarious predicaments that the main character finds herself in. No spoilers, but I also love that the film stayed true to its storyline with an ending that was satisfying and not cliché romcom. This is not Bridget Jones, and it didn't deserve to have a Bridget Jones-style ending. It was definitely a thumbs up on my stream list, and a good laugh on an otherwise slow weeknight.

I don't understand the bad reviews.
25 March 2023
Although it's not the best horror movie in the world, I enjoyed it and I don't understand why it's getting so much hate. I will agree that the spent a lot of time on the build up and that the ending happened fairly quickly but I honestly didn't mind that. I don't give away any spoilers but sufficed to say, it's a satisfying ending. It's not one of those horror movies with an ending that feels incomplete or hangs in the air. I thought the acting was good and the sets were absolutely beautiful. I also appreciated that it was an hour and 40 mins. So many filmmakers think all movies have to be 2 hours now and this was clearly an example of a movie that did not. I won't be rewatching it, but I still felt like it was a good use of my time.

What is everyone seeing that I'm missing?!

There was so much hype around this show and I just don't get it. I knew there'd be a problem after the first episode when there was no hook- nothing happened to get me interested I spent pretty much the first 5 episodes waiting for something to happen. I just don't see the point of this show. I'm at a loss. If you want to watch a show about a bunch of white people on vacation doing vacation things, this show is for you. Jennifer Coolidge was good in it as well but not jaw dropping because her character was pretty one note. And all the characters are pretty much unlikeable. After it was over, I apologized to my boyfriend for suggesting it.

M Night Shamalan-esque without the twist.

I'd have to say this movie really set up a cool story that had a lot of room to gallop but in the end, didn't end up going anywhere. Like a lot of horror/psychological genre films, the ending was not satisfying, and it left me with more questions than answers. I'd recommend skipping it. It wasn't horrible; it was just pointless.

What is this?

What is this and why did Blumhouse put their name on it? This film got some good interviews from participants but was pieced together with all the skill of an undergrad. I think the filmmaker waited too late to state his intention for this movie. It came across as some sort of weird and uncomfortable stalker film. A love letter to Martin Skrelli. I had to use the fast- forward through several awkward scenes.

It was alright.

Warning: Spoilers
The acting was great and the setup and premise is really engaging. However, the makeup was pretty terrible. It was very obvious from episode 1 that they will be playing with age as obviously young actors are made to look older. There was a particular character that they aged so much it was almost comical. However, overall it's not a bad series. I did fast forward sometimes because they went really heavy on the religious sermons and it got a little slow. If I wanted to go to church, I'll go to church. But aside from that, ok series.

Not what you think it's going to be.

This disappointment leaves so much to be desired. The trailer was misleading. It really sets the movie up to be something it ends up not being. Instead it becomes a strong political and social statement. There was some good potential here but the story just didn't pan out. I can't tell you what it's about without spoiling it but I can guarantee that what you're signing up for, is not what you're going to get. Keep looking.

This movie was sponsored by... everyone.

The movie itself was not that great but my boyfriend and I got a huge kick out of seeing all the product placement. Labels were out and clearly visible. It kind of turned into a game trying to spot the next product. The movie itself was predictable and campy. What else can I say about a movie with a Kardashian in the cast? Although the movie seemed to be geared towards a younger audience, there is a brief conversation about sex and one of the characters drops the F bomb. It was a swing and a miss but I didn't really know how they were going to try to pull off the same premise in 2021 anyway. Watch if you're bored but don't expect an amazing experience.

It's kind of a bad QI with a more structured theme.
29 June 2020
I love British panel shows but this one was a bit of a mess. Sue is a fantastic host but I can't help but think this is almost an exact copy of QI with a different theme and too many panel guests. A lot is going on and and I'm confused as to whether or not I'm watching an informational show or a comedy show, and I think tipping the scales into comedy makes it a bit scattered. Also as an American, it's a bit boring because I don't know who any of the people are that they are discussing trivia about.
