Brilliant film about obsession
30 June 2020
Shakespeare said that "expectation is the root of all heartache". If you go into Zodiac expecting a traditional police procedural or crime film you will be disappointed. But if you go into Zodiac and accept the film on its own terms then you will be rewarded.

This is a haunting examination of obsession that tears at the moral fabric of the main characters. The Zodiac case both nourishes and destroys the characters.

There are brilliant scenes n this film and each could be a masterclass in how to create tension. The scenes with the Zodiac killer are done in such a matter of fact way that they become truly unnerving.

The film may be overlong and at times tangential but its also bod and brilliant and as such well worth your time.

Like watching a dream...

A hauntingly beautiful short film that stays with you. Feels like watching a dream. Strong performances and the final scene is a punch to the gut.

Poetic Doc
30 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this at the Bushwick Film Fest. Strong doc film with beautiful long takes that capture poetic conversations between characters in the most unusual settings. A standout moment happens when one of the lead characters is being called out for his hypocrisy and tear gas hits (its not like in the movies), they slowly begin to realize their eyes are burning and run for shelter and perfume believe it or not (helps counteract the effects of tear gas).

The film takes a complicated topic and streamlines it by focusing on two characters, a Palestinian shop owner and Israeli (ex soldier), as they navigate Hebron (a complicated place to say the least).

The scene when the two characters meet is powerful even though the we can't hear what they are saying. In retrospect I found this more powerful since it allows us to infer what is happening.
