The Mummy (1999)
By no means a game changer, but fun nonetheless
The Mummy is a fun movie... there's really not much else I can say about it. If you enjoyed Indiana Jones, then this movie is for you. It has comedy, it has action, it has horror (albeit very mild), and it manages to balance these elements all throughout.
American Horror Story (2011)
Intriguing horror that inevitably lapses into thriller
Overall, AHS is very entertaining. It suffers from some poor choices (why so many camera cuts??), but you can't complain too much when you want to keep watching episodes.
Season 1: Murder House was incredible (8/10). The first few episodes are genuinely creepy. As you begin to understand the characters and how they operate, however, the show fails to deliver on the creep factor as you can predict what will happen. This doesn't necessarily detract from the quality of the show; the story line remains compelling and shocking all throughout the season.
Will update for future seasons.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Great movie almost ruined by the ending.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It kept delivering and delivering, so when the final 20 minutes or so played out, I was just as much on the edge of my seat as the middle of the movie. But it ended up being a sloppy mess of an end.
Aliens??!!
Seriously, aliens?!
This would have been my favorite movies. The antagonist was supposed to be Howard. And then the aliens show up on screen, and suddenly nothing is creepy any more. It lost all intensity.
It still deserves a 6/10 because I did enjoy the majority of the film, and I would recommend this for others - just prepare to be disappointed by the ending.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Great story, great acting, great movie, but.... I just didn't enjoy it.
Gyllenhaal's acting was spot on in this movie. I've only seen one other film with him (Prisoner's) and I was blown away by how completely he adopts the roles. You don't think of him as Gyllenhaal, you think of him as Bloom or Loki.
The movie in general was great as well. Interesting premise, successful execution, etc etc.
But it just didn't set well with me. Maybe it's because it's so bleak and depressing, maybe because I felt like the movie didn't go anywhere. But I didn't come away from Nightcrawler with very many levels of positivity.
Listen, I can handle sad, dark, and depressing films. But they also have to carry a purpose. This movie felt aimless.
It's a movie many will enjoy, but it's not for me.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Overrated sequel that doesn't work.
My family and I decided to watch this movie after enjoying the first, and this one was ***awful***. I've seen a lot of movies recently, and this has been one of the worst.
We spent the entire two hours laughing at it because of how bad it was.
The biggest issue is that this movie is entirely based on stupid self proclaimed "scientists" making stupid decisions so they end up in danger.
Every few minutes another character makes another choice that defies all logic and then it's "here we go again..."
Don't get me started on the action scenes. There was one particular scene where a character was hanging off of a roof with one hand whilst throwing tiles from the roof onto a raptor down below with the other hand. The hell are roof tiles gonna do to a velociraptor? There was another raptor on the roof with her.... Oh, and she made it out alive.
That's because all of the main characters in this film keep surviving against all odds despite the awful decisions they make.
Honestly, you want them to die by the end of the film.
Don't give in to the stupidity of this movie. Don't waste two hours of your life on this rotten excuse for a sequel.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Unoriginal action series that doesn't grab your attention
I like action films. I like films without action. I'm not opinionated either way, so I should like Jack Ryan, right? Wrong.
For some reason, it just never worked for me. The characters aren't engaging and the plot is unsurprising. Mildly entertaining at best. I fell asleep during more than one of the episodes.
