Haunted: Cult of Torture (2019)
Plain Truth
I gave this episode a 10/10 just because I wish more people knew the story of WCG and Herbert Armstrong's wide-reaching legacy of abuse. Everything James Swift says in this episode is the plain truth.
The re-enactments do miss the mark though. The minister is depicted as this sinister, dark-spirited dude, and the churchgoers are depicted as a crowd of total whackos. The truth is that Armstrong's church grew rapidly because the environment was welcoming. It was a culture that expected everyone, especially the ministry, to act like they were happy people without any problems. New members would want to be just like everyone at church, so they'd fake it 'til they made it. I think, deep down, everyone knew they weren't perfect and didn't fit in, but opening your mind to that possibility would be opening your mind to demon possession.
Like the other reviewer said, the horrors that went on at WCG could be a whole series to itself. I'm in my thirties and still dealing with the anger I have about that cult, and I didn't get it nearly as bad as Swift got it. It's too bad the afterlife isn't real because Herb deserves a special room in hell.
