Prince of the City (1981)
Redemption
The scales of the law drop and rise constantly in this outstanding performance by Treat Williams. By far his best interpretation to date.
The difference between "Law On The Books" and "Law In Practice" is shown in Prince Of The City. Daniel Ciello's decision making process is a constant russian roulette, as his destiny is a mistery until the end. Making a deal is the name of the game in this movie and Danny Ciello certainly gets the deal of his lifetime when the government decides to use the testimony of his and his partner's misconduct as collateral toward the entire investigation.
Danny decides to do the right thing by ratting out himself and everyone else. A deep attempt to start again, to redeem himself. The law forgives Danny at the end however, the "unofficial" rules of life will show him the tab he'll have to pick up when, during a training class of rookies, Detective Stern asks "Are you THE Detective Ciello?"
What happened to the Oscar judges twentytwo years ago when this movie came out?
The Accidental Tourist (1988)
Food for thought
This movie is everything but a chickflick. The loss of a son, the break-up with his wife, the different business trips and the "Accidental" encounter with an odd woman are the wheels of an engine that will make Macon Leary's world turn around.
From a muffled lifestyle after the death of his son Ethan, Macon will arrive at a fork in the road, a chance to make changes for himself. Food for thought for those who think of their own lives and hearts as an untouchable fortress. The entire movie flows as a chain reaction.
La scorta (1993)
Armored Life
This is an example of what Italians call an "Armored Life". Judges who are fought by their willingness to bring justice to the people of Italy and the risk of losing their lives or their loved ones. The story of a magistrate who practically spends his daily life with the five men of his escort in the effort to shed light the Mafia's organizational structure and its brain trust.
Two realities: Judge De Francesco, his men and an almost invisible enemy who serves them shocks of adrenaline instead of coffee every morning when they start their day. Amendola and Cecchi skillfully portray a reality still unknown to many and very familiar to many of those who were or are still involved with the fight against organized crime in Italy. Very realistic in each detail.
Largo retorno (1975)
Must see
I've seen this movie overseas in the early 1980's, under its itaian title "A Venezia muore un'estate".
The love scenes are tender yet passionate, accompanied by venetian soloists music. It's the story of a strong, firm link that will keep a husband and a wife together during and after her artificially induced sleep. She gets hybernated due to an illness that had no cure at the time. While dealing with the pain with the help of Irene, a common friend of theirs, David (The husband) remenisces this beautiful story since its beginning: The pictures taken in Venice's Piazza San Marco, making love to her, their numerous walks.
She will wake up after twenty years and her love for him is still the same. Albeit their strong feelings and the fact that they are together again, David has aged and won't have enough time to make up for the years he spent apart from his loved one.
I have been looking for this movie for the longest time without any success. If there is anyone who can point me out to some websites that might have this movie please let me know. Thanks.
