God Forbid (2022)
The sound mixing!!?
Seriously guys, who in gods green earth did the sound mixing for this? They need to be fired and never allowed to work on a film again. The documentary starts with the subject giving an interview with rap blasting in the background at the same volume! It's insanely hard to hear what someone is saying with lyrical rap music playing over it.
I thought that the intro would be the end of it, but unfortunately this continues throughout the entire documentary. It's an ok story, but the aggressively loud "background" music is just way too distracting. Do yourself a favour, watch it on mute and read the subtitles.
Keep Breathing (2022)
Play it on mute
The cinematography is beautiful.. Everything else sucks. Really frustrating for anyone that knows anything about survival as everything was very unrealistic yet predictable at the same time.
When We Were Bullies (2021)
Painful to watch..
And not the good kind of painful where crazy stuff that's hard to watch happens. The intensely boring kind of painful. The director should have listened to the old lady and not made the film (you'll understand if you watch it).
Boiling Point (2021)
The single-shot feature that nobody asked for
When a crew pulls off a great single-shot scene, it can be very effective. I'm talking about the likes of Children of Men, Birdman, and others that I can't think of right now. It looks cool and is impressive to film nerds like myself. But to do a WHOLE FEATURE?! It just seems so unnecessary. I mean, why? Is there anybody out there watching movies and saying "this would be much better if it were one unedited shot"? For me, it's the opposite as this movie needs editing. It's not a total waste of time, but could have been much more.
Candyman (2021)
Refreshing take on a classic
Man, everything Jordan Peele touches turns to gold. While I agree that it could have been more violent as most of the kills were off camera, I thought it was a clever, well-thought film. I'll be looking forward to more from Nia Dacosta.
Old (2021)
Offensively Bad
It's not very often that I see a film that's so bad that it makes me angry. As a lover of all things cinema, "Old" genuinely upsets me. The reason it's so upsetting is that it could have easily been a mediocre film if a little bit of effort went into it. If this was made by a 19-year-old film student, I'd say "well, it sucks, but that's understandable", but Shyamalan knows better. It's so clearly a cash grab and no self-respecting filmmaker would ever attach his/her name to.
There's an old adage in writing that goes "show, don't tell". They don't do that in "old". The dialog is SOOO contrived. There are so many extended scenes of the cast standing around explaining the plot to each other. Basically, Shyamalan thinks that the viewer is so dumb that he has to baby feed the story to you throughout the film. On top of that, the audio sucks, the cinematography sucks, and the acting sucks. Basically, this film has no redeeming qualities. If everything sucked just a little bit more, it would fall into the "so bad it's good" category, but unfortunately it can't even do that right.
Do yourself a favor and pass on this one.
Paranoid Park (2007)
A whole Lotta nothing
I feel like people like this movie because they think they're supposed to since it's directed by the great Gus Van Sant. For me, it was a swing and a miss. So many long, drawn out shots of nothing that are typically used to build suspense. It worked in Elephant, it doesn't work here. Apparently the script is only 30 pages, which is about a third of what a typical 90 minute film is. I'd pass on this one unless you're a huge VAn Sant fan.
Nomadland (2020)
Not great.. And yes, I get it
It's not that I'm too simple-minded to appreciate artsy films, because I love me a slow burn. But this just wasn't the great film that people made it out to be. The story certainly could have used a little edge, the pacing was painful, and they made some very odd decisions with the cinematography. Not a bad movie, but certainly not a best picture.
11:14 (2003)
Awesome Hidden Gem!
I pride myself on my ability to recommend films that people have never heard of, and this is one of my go-to's. It blows my mind that it's more popular. I think it may have something to do with the hard-to-remember title, but who knows? It's got a Pulp Fiction feel to it with a charming indie-film tone with a few jaw-dropping scenes. Just watch it, you won't be disappointed.
Too Old to Die Young (2019)
Not for everyone
I'm always down for some art house viewing, but I feel that some of the artsy techniques used are a little overdone. By that I mean the agonizing long pauses in dialog, the expressionless acting, the sci-fi drone music, etc. It's worth a watch though, just manage your expectations.
Quarry (2016)
Why was this canceled?!
I don't know what rock I was living under when this came out, but I just wantched it and I'm blown away by how amazing it is. It's incredible in every aspect. The only reason I can think of as to why is was canceled is that is may be a little dark for some executives. At least they left us with one great season.
The North Water (2021)
Pleasant surprise
I can't believe I've never heard of this show until now! It has all the ingredients of a hit series; all-star cast, AMC, the rugged wild, seriel killer.. Just an amazing, creepy show. Can't wait for the last 2 episodes.
The White Lotus (2021)
Brilliant so far
This is currently my favorite show that's running (honestly though, it doesn't have much competition). The music is phenomenal and I hope the composer wins an award. It's not everybody's brand of comedy, but just because something isn't lol funny doesn't mean it's not funny. Although we're at episode 3 and nothing of huge significance has happened yet, I'm 100% invested in the characters and can't wait to watch it every week.
Disjointed (2017)
BRING THIS SHOW BACK!!
This show was cut TRAGICALLY short! I feel like it was just starting to find it's rhythm and the different character stories were really starting to develop. I binged the entire series when it was first released on Netflix and had a good laugh. Since then, it has become my background noise show and I appreciate it more every time I watch it. It's absolutely brilliant! And for all those whining about the laugh track / live audience, you just don't get it. It's a throwback to the days of simpler television. PLEASE MAKE MORE!
Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
Didn't age well...
I am by no means part of the "woke mob" nor would I ever give a bad review because I took offense to something in a film. Thay being said, Linklater's "dazed and confused" writing style just didn't age well. I'm a huge Dazed and Confused fan, I thought Boyhood was ambitious yet quite dull, and now this. This awful, sorry excuse for a frat house film. It had no point, horrible acting, weak writing, and absolutely no redeeming qualities. Granted, I didn't finish it, so I guess it's possible that there's a huge plot twist and the film gets better in the last 20 minutes, but that's a long shot. Save yourself the time and pass on this one..
