True Detective (2014)
S1 conceited bs. S4 excellent
I disliked the opening episode of season 1 and the rest of the season remained largely boring for me. The conceited opening with two so-called grizzled male detectives talking crap as 'wisdom' and hero worshipping themselves and talking like old sages as if their existence is so very fascinating, more so than the crime. Utter yawnfest.
Season 4 was fascinating and nuanced. Ignore the haters lol. They got a big shock to get a story that wasn't male centric all of a sudden. Most of the main characters in s4 are female, the story is centered on women's stories and the ending explores female rage. Looks like a lot of people couldn't handle it. Couldn't handle two female main characters who defy the traditional gender roles and come out on top. Apparently this is incredible and unbelievable. It was a great ride. Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for more in season 5. Jodie Foster played a role unlike any ive seen her play before. A pity she won't be in next season but I look forward to what the show runner will bring. Season 4 has drawn me back into this show and I might even give seasons 2 and 3 a watch now.
Three Pines (2022)
Disappointing. Doesn't rise to promised heights. Silly season 1 cliffhanger
I watch a lot of these types of dramas and this was mediocre but beautiful to look at. So much promise but fell flat. The main characters' complexities are never fully realised or integrated into the overall plot, and the small town's people never fully come to life. The murders themselves are difficult to care for because the storytelling is not cohesive in a way that create intrigue. Something key is missing. The writing is the problem. Much false depth thrown in yet overall the stories are shallow and difficult to feel any interest in and don't evoke emotions. I really wanted to like it. I appreciate the overarching storyline about the native American women going missing but the rest of the murders are unmemorable. And the season 1 cliffhanger was unnecessary and dull. After watching such a flat show we don't even get the satisfaction of seeing the culprit get their comeuppance. I wont bother watching season 2. A pity. I don't understand the high ratings for this programme. Watch Happy Valley instead to see how it should be done.
Hotel Portofino (2022)
This is not a whodunnit
I love whodunnits and this is not one, which was greatly disappointing because that was the whole reason I watched the show. The only meagre mystery was in episode 4 and 5 out of 6. Other than that, it is an entirely watchable show. Nothing brilliant. I would have given just 6 stars but added one extra for for fine acting from so many of my favourites. I only wish I had not been misled by the tagline on imdb and even the trailer.
Rules of the Game (2022)
Great drama. Explores highly relevant themes in working life today
Maxine Peake is a wonderful actress, which is what drew me to the show. It explores themes highly relevant to the environments we work in today. A very relevant drama. Ignore the haters and give it a go.
Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Awful acting in lead role spoiled the whole thing
I am a fan of David Suchet's Poirot. I gave this a shot but the awful acting by the actor who plays Poirot in this one spoiled the whole thing and rendered Poirot into a horribly unlikeable character. I couldnt bear to watch more than 15 minutes. Everything else about the show was fine for a film of its era but this awful version of Poirot was intolerable.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Sanctuary (2017)
Superb episode. Brilliant SVU unafraid to tackle difficult topics!
Excellent conclusion to the 2 part series finale. It wraps up the story from the previous espisode and introduces more depth and a new linked storyline, cranking up the tension and showing characters making difficult choices about what is right and what is wrong in an awful situation. This story rings true to life. SVU shows again that it is not afraid to speak truth to power. This show is not afraid to explore complex and difficult topics and highlight some of the atrocities and hate crimes taking place in today's political climate, and give insight in to the subsequent impact on stretched law enforcement and suffering communities.
These 2 episodes had me on the edge of my seat. Difficult watching at times but essential and brave storytelling. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing these 2 episodes to life. Superb acting from everyone. I am a long time fan of this show and SVU just gets better and better. Love this show!
P.s. The seriously skewed rating given for these 2 excellent season finale episodes is nonsense. Don't believe it for a second. The show consistently scores 9/10 rating and then for 2 episodes exploring topics some people don't like it suddenly drops in quality to 5/10? I don't think so. People's political agendas are showing and their hate is clearly getting in the way of their common sense, which ironically enough is exactly what these episodes were exploring.
