Challengers (2024)
Back and forth, in a trance... 10/10
This movie absolutely FLOORED me. The direction, the script, the music, the "acting" (I put quotations there because it felt like real life, the acting was perfect). The way the camera moves was CONSTANTLY fresh. One stop-motion-esque scene in particular --- but PLEASE, just go experience it for yourself. It's better than anything this year and will be bound to become an all time classic. There's nothing even remotely similar to this movie. The all-time most impressive thing about this movie is how at the start of the movie there is little attachment to the characters and then it reveals more and more layers until literally you are at the edge of your seat all the way up to the finish line. Layers and layers until, yes, a true CLIMAX. I don't write reviews, but this movie just grabbed me and excited me about film again. I'm home, sitting on my bed, and my heart is still pounding strong. This makes me want to create something. This is ART. 10/10.
Thanksgiving (2023)
Boom!
Wowww! What an UNFORGETTABLE theater experience! My friends and I all went and didn't mean to be so loud but, man! How could we not be? It's been a while since I've seen such an awesome slasher movie. Eli Roth killed it! The movie took a bunch of unexpected turns and never forgot that the audience was there to be entertained and have fun. That's the thing. So many movies these days try to spoonfeed me too many messages and, in the end, forget to give me an entertaining time. "Thanksgiving" is 100% for entertainment. It's a wild roller-coaster ride from start to finish and, honestly, I'm REALLY hoping for a sequel... maybe call it "Next Thanksgiving" or "Thankskilling"?? Thank you Eli!
Bones and All (2022)
My first written review
Why am I writing this? Because this film needs more love and recognition. This is a near-perfect film that goes from one unforgettable sequence to the next. Finally, as an audience, we get blessed with a breath of fresh air, something completely original and impossible to take your eyes off of. As a filmmaker and film student, these days it's incredibly rare to come by a film like this gem. I'm usually searching through the past 100 years vault of cinema for treasures to scratch that "good movie" itch. For 2022 films, this and "Three Thousand Years of Longing" definitely did that.
Here, we have a genre mish-mash with absolutely unforgettable characters that all feel fleshed out and real, even with short scenes. The story goes on at a perfect pace, and lingers far after the credits role. It's beauty is found in each perfectly coordinated shot and intimate touch. Everything feels very personal and well thought out.
This is the type of movie that will gain a HUGE following in the decades to come, just like all the great films. They are always underappreciated when released and later discovered for the gems that they are. For all the true cinema lovers that search out the enormous catalog of films to discover something rich, you will surely find it here.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Pure escapism
That first hour may be a little bit too much story and characters, but once we arrive at the water, there is no film of this year that can compare to the thrills that come our way. It's been a very long time that I've been in a movie theater with an audience that gives a roaring applause, not just once, but 3 times during a movie. Some know-it-all critics look too much at characters and story, while they miss out on the experience. Let yourself enjoy the journey! Many critics had negative reviews of 2001: A Space Odyssey when it came out too. Sometimes its not about the story, but the experience, and for that, I give this movie a 10/10.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
What's the point?
If only there were better writers hired to match the expensive visual quality. I don't care if a movie is filmed with a camcorder, as long as it has a good story. Its too bad the focus was only on visuals here. Maybe Tolkien's world should be left alone. It's pretty obvious that the writers on this project don't even come close to matching Tolkien's style, and many times it doesn't even feel like Middle Earth. Don't waste your time with this one, except if you are a visual effects designer. Maybe the next episodes will get better and better, but I don't have any excitement for what's to come as of now.
Ohayô (1959)
A 90-minute movie that feels way too long
I loved certain parts of this film, mainly the two boys taking a vow of silence, but in my opinion other parts involving the adults were just so unnecessary and boring. If they would've just made it a short film involving the 2 boys, my score would be much higher. I tried to show this movie to my roommates, telling them that I heard many great things, but by the end, 2 of them were asleep. The cinematography was beautiful and the overall atmosphere of the movie is lighthearted and fun, but unfortunately there were too many unneeded scenes that make it a boring watch.
