The New Mutants (2020)
Don't understand all the hate for this movie.
I bought and read the books when they first came out. This movie is essentially a faithful adaptation of the first issues of Marvel comics "The New Mutants"... It is a decent standalone film far better than "Dark Phoenix" or "Apocalypse"... Yes there are some problems but it's cool seeing Roberto Costa brought to life, Illyana Rasputin brought to life, Dani Moonstar's spirit bear brought to life. I suggest anyone who hates this film is not a lover of the comic book. Chris Claremont, Bill Senkiewicz and others provided us interesting characters and an interesting story, this film does a fine job and bringing those characters to life on screen for the first time. I'm an X-Men fan from way back in '77. There is nothing so terrible about this film as to rate a one star.
The Boys (2019)
It ain't as good as all that....I mean damn....
I've seen ALL the superhero movies---I've been a comic book fan my whole life...I appreciate what they've done here....and the hard work on display...There are LOTS of CRAZY things going down in this series.......but junk writing is junk writing......and about half of this series is poorly written-----there's a fair bit of gore for the sake of gore, It's obvious........there are attempts at humor which fail miserably----........Karl Urban sounds like a land locked Capt. Jack Sparrow chewing scenery as hard as he can while stupidly waxing poetic about the Spice Girls----It seems like someone got really high and thought "Hmmm, What's funny? what's shocking?---Oh I know add more blood!"--------There are great performances from all of the actors, Shue, Starr, Quaid, and yes, Urban for what it's worth...But as the largest name on the marquee, His character's just annoyingly closed off and one dimensional..... basically bullet proof because of plot armor.....(oh and he can apparently sneak into ANY ROOM at ANY TIME undetected? please...).....The series as a whole plays a little like "Sin City" with it's tropes out front and big dumb ideas...(modern fame, the brainwashing of society, by the government, the Christian right, the corporations...) --- It owes a great deal to "Watchmen" of course........ the story drags on for 8 hours....and It's STILL not over........Sure, a couple things get light shed on them by episode 8.......and yes, Homelander as a character is terrifying in his own way...but there's a whole lotta cringe and not enough "Super"-----Producing comic book hero stories is no longer acceptable as a "cut and paste " affair after the brilliance of the MCU in the last few years.
How Do You Know (2010)
"(pla-) d'oh! I wished I hadn't payed to see this."
Slow, mostly uninspired running around New York wanna be comedy. Unfortunately movie is just not funny. Only one scene in whole movie really well done and romantic at the same time.(the hospital) Expected a much better movie from this team of talent. Every actor is likable, but the script is disjointed and boring. Paul Rudd is cute as ever. Every previous movie by EVERY actor in this film was a better movie than this one. Makes one wonder how this picture and the salaries of the people in this picture, got the green light from the bean counters at the studio. It's a shame to think there are struggling young filmmakers who have to BEG to get well done movies made in Hollywood. Meanwhile Brooks calls in several favors to be able to get this poorly written piece of movie made,(with Jack Nicholson no less) and then actually released(!)in theaters. Terrible.
The Inbetweeners (2008)
Written very close to between "just right" and "genuinely funny"
It reminds me of That 70's Show in that it always thought it was funnier than it really was. Lots of good setups and concepts but not every single thing works.Mind you my only knowledge so far is the 2 episodes I saw last night on BBC America, that is all. I like how the obviously most attractive kid is not the center of the story.(In fact, now that I think about it the four guys and their relationships to each other are a dead ringer for Hyde,Kelso,Fez and Eric, hmph, weird.)Anyway I think it worked best in the side bits and quirky unexplainable things.. there was a bit last night where Jay said hello and a few words in passing to an older guy whom he knew around town and then after was picked on by the other two about how he had a "Friend",,, awww a "friend" they'd say sarcastically with goofy smiles and thumbs up, because the others didn't really know him I guess,it was nothing of course, but that's the kind of unexplainable stupidity 15 yr old boys do to each other.-- It shouldn't have worked because there was no real context, but it did. It had crossed over into the Seinfeld zone of device made from nothing as opposed to some planned out scripted thing. If they continue in that vein and don't grow up too soon, this show could become the new "Young Ones"-(yes I know the Young Ones will never be replaced- It's just for context, put your guns away.)
