Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Predictable
Lots of hype around this movie, but why ? So the world is going to end and 4 people who met on a message board think they are somehow the four horseman of the apocalypse ? The writing and acting is terrible. I mean for one the apocalyptic events are a little weak and not very convincing it's the "wrath of god". The "four horseman of the apocalypse" don't do a very good job of explaining why they are there, they just look like a bunch of nut jobs who went down too many internet rabbit holes. Daddy Eric and Andrews back story is full of tropes and stereotypes that fail to provide any emotional connection with the main characters. In the end the they just randomly decide to believe these people and find no issues in killing each other ? It's poorly written, poorly acted and lacking in substance.
The Harbinger (2022)
A movie about COVID...
I was hoping for a good horror, instead I was presented with a rehash of the COVID pandemic. The movie cinematically looked good, the acting was decent (at least between the two main characters). The storyline was awful. The focus on COVID overshadowed the horror elements of the movie and after living through the pandemic for several years felt like a subject that we are all tired of hearing about. The story failed to explain the origins of the harbinger and didn't do a good job explaining its motivation or the purpose of the dreams. The demonologist felt like a last minute add in to provide some background, but it was poorly executed and a bit "goofy". Bottom line, don't waste your money on this movie, unless you want to watch folks talking about COVID, masking, quarantines and social distancing.
Monster (2022)
Dark Comedy ???
There are so many parallels between the way Dahmer is portrayed in this series and Napoleon Dynamite. Yes this series is about a notorious serial killer and yet I couldn't help but my find self laughing at times because I felt the show was less serious and more "Dark Comedy". One can't help but to draw parallels to both Napoleon Dynamite's character and Stepbrothers - thanks to his father portrayed by Richard Jenkins. The interactions between Dahmer and his grandmother were comical at times, as were his interactions with other people. Yes, it's a story about one of the most well know serial killers of all time, but this wasn't the type of series that had you walking away with concern for Dahmer's victims as it was more about his persona and quirky mannerisms.
Black Bird (2022)
Good Cast, Slow Pace
Greg, and Ray are great actors, Taran however seems like he is trying to hard to be an American Gangster. Dialog between James and and the serial killer seems dry at times and unnecessary. Jame's shift from a soulless career criminal to a person who now cries in his cell and cares for others feels artificial. The show has a great cast, but the storyline feels choppy at times and there are scenes that feel like they were added for filler. I enjoy crime dramas, but this felt low budget series, thankful Ray And Greg give it a boost with their fantastic acting.
Lightyear (2022)
Feels less Pixar...
I absolutely love the Toy Story franchise and was excited that they decided to expand on it with the new Lightyear movie. The issue is the movie while visually good looking lacks the essence of what makes a Pixar movie magical. The storyline is boring, predictable. The voice acting is decent, not not at the same level as the Toy Story movies which had a certain "feel" to them in which the voices seamlessly matched the characters. The storyline along with the subpar voice acting makes for a less then stellar movie that had me a and my children bored at times and not as engaged. This is no Encanto. To me this is the one Pixar movie to skip. Let's hope Disney and Pixar can return to their roots and expand on what was a fantastic blossoming franchise.
Locke & Key (2020)
The first season was great, second not so much
The first season had a good script full of wonder and mystery. The second season feels like a cheaply made CW teen drama. It seems like every character has lost some sparkle the first season provided. I am not sure what changed direction wise, but my wife and I could barely make it through season 2 falling asleep through most episodes.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A decent watch
It wasn't one of the better movies I watched in 2021, but a decent watch none the less. The movie seems to touch in a number of political subjects: How we focus on stupid celebrities in our society instead of important people. How our media outlets focus on click bait articles and ignore important subjects and how social media is shaping our viewpoints. Some folks might see this movie as anti-right, but I felt this movie could be seen very much as anti-left considering a majority of our media and our big tech companies are big left wing conglomerates.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Good watch, but poor writing...
The show is "fun" to watch, but the storyline is all over the place and it seems as though the writers didn't know where to take it. Take Riley Flynn, what was his role in this series ? He seems like a central character who quickly becomes obsolete without adding any value to the story. The characters all seem to have a general lack of direction: Take the sheriff whose only purpose was to present a Muslim awareness PSA - instead they could have built onto his character and added value. There is long drawn out scenes which seem like filler with no added value to the storyline. The AA meetings drag on without purpose, and Riley Flynn's conversations with Erin Green often seem void of any emotional connection between the characters just dry awkward moments. To me the show is a fun watch, but the story has no general direction, it seems like a bad cut and paste job with lots of filler added to complete the series.
Madres (2021)
Bait and Switch
Was supposed to be a horror movie, instead turns out the entire movie is political. Once Rachel Maddow shows up at the end it lost all credibility. I am disappointed in the bait and switch. Hollywood is again loosing its touch in that people do not desire embdeed political messages or hidden agendas, we just want to be entertained ! This is why more and more I find enjoyment from movies overseas where the focus is entertainment, not brainwashing the audience !
Karen (2021)
A hard watch
It's a movie that proves it's point quite clearly: racisim in the 21st century is a fairly tail created by Hollywood and our media to divide us. The movie itself was a hard watch. Poorly acted and scripted to the degree there was more laughs than drama injected into the poorly defined narrative. Anyone who lives in today's suburbia knows that people of all colors get along quite well. The Karens of the world do in fact exist, but they come in all shades of color and ages.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
Stupid with a capital S
I don't understand how they can label this as a comedy. It's not even remotely funny.
