Super Size Me (2004)
What I have learnt
-the size of drinks or food portion keeps getting bigger- lure people (kids with toys, adults with good deals)
-addictive (got hungry easily after that and come back for more fast food)
-most heavily advertised food is consumed the most
-improved mood by healthy eating
-no one eats this food 3 times a day, but it's accumulated.
13 Going on 30 (2004)
Don't be blinded
One message that speaks to me after watching this movie is do not lose yourself in becoming the successful person you want to be. Hold on to your values and be your authentic self. Do not forget your initial intention in the pursuit of success.
The adult female lead really expresses her character well. From the way she acted like a 13-year-old to her explosion of feelings for her friend, Matt. This movie will make you think of the person you want to be and reminds you to always be your true self without conforming to the trends of this world. The trends of this world like fame, popularity and vanity is indeed desirable, but ultimately meaningless as compared to having true relationships.
The Hunger Games (2012)
Normal
I don't find anything special about this movie as wells as Catching Fire apart from its creative imagination. Manipulating the ways to get other killed and enjoying it is a pretty dark thing.
Dark (2017)
Could be confusing but will keep you curious
It's interesting but it doesn't fully keep my curiosity going. I feel like they keep revolving around the same thing. And I don't really get the thing. There are moments which are jaw dropping like when I know Stranger is Noah and when Claudia Tiedermann left her father to die. Definitely need a family tree or even timeline chart.
What I understand about Dark is:
At one moment, there are several timelines. Adam wants the Apocalypse to come and end the world. So he has to make sure that everything unfold as planned. Mikkel has to go missing. Michael has to die. Martha has to die in Jonas' arms.
If Helge is institutionalised in 1953, how does he kill people in 2019? So he came out from the institution by then.
If Ulrich is institutionalised in 1921, I guess it doesn't affect the time because another Ulrich will be reborn to make Mikkel.
Time travel equipment include the killer chair (failed experiment- why do they build the chair just to kill boys?), the clock device, the passageway (it's broken and not secure so Mikkel and Jonas travel to other timelines unknowingly) and and the God particle. Only clock device and God particle allow them to travel exactly to their desired timeline.
Claudia, Noah and Jonas fought against Adam to save their loved ones. But if they know everything will happen as they should due the time cycle, then why bother fighting? Because Claudia said things can be changed little by little. So this gives them hope.
Overall, I am just okay with it. Although understanding the show gives me a headache, there's just something about Dark (is it the popularity or the curiosity to know just what really happens) that makes me wanna keep watching. The ending for Season 2 is lit. Martha appearing after she died and said she is from another world.
El hoyo (2019)
Interesting for different interpretation
The first thing I caught from the movie is we need to be considerate of people who are in lower social position than us so that we all can survive together. When I read the review about this movie, it says the movie is about capitalism. Capitalism is about social and economic order, private ownership and production and consumption via the market. The gruesome scenes of cannibalism and how disillusioned people could become when they fought for basic needs remind me of the hardship that pushes people to go to their extreme. The girl is the message and the only one that ascended, which means only youths can make a change because they are pure. People who have long battled with the system have been corrupted along the way. We really need to share.
Kaguya-hime no monogatari (2013)
The soothing Japanese vibes
Perfect for anyone looking for something calm and chilled to watch. To me, some Japanese anime emits a soothing vibe and this anime combines chillness + Japanese folklore perfectly
It has beautiful graphics with a sad, calming song. It just reminds me to take joy in the simple things in life. Kaguya was happy and content while living in the countryside, I can feel it strongly through the graphic illustration. Playing in the fields, stealing fruits etc. Be grateful for the little things in life.
Lost Girls (2020)
Didn't know such a tragedy could be unresolved
It brings to my attention the serial death of at least 16 sex workers in the Long Island. No suspect. No charges till now. In 2010, Mari Gilbert is very determined to find her daughter and her death cause but the police were incompetent. But what really shocked me was what the movie did not show us. Mari Gilbert was killed by Sarra, her psychotic daughter with multiple 237 stabs and a fire extinguisher in 2016. Like wow. Sarra had a son before Shannon's death and she has been with her mother's boyfriend. Anyway, drugs, mental illness and resentment can really make someone unbelievable.
Breakthrough (2019)
A well-filmed true story to boost your faith
John was impossible to be saved. He was deprived of oxygen for 15 minutes after falling through thin ice. His pulse only recovered when his mom prayed. Many people prayed for him the day before medical equipments were taken off him. He was fully recovered. I don't understand why God chose to save some but not others. But I know that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. I survived the drowning incident. I guess God still wants to accomplish His purpose through me.
Gangcheolbi (2017)
the North and the South
I learnt about the tension between North and South Korea. I didn't expect that North Koreans military would possibly blame their Great Leader for not using the nuclear weapons. The difference between the strong, straightforward North Korean soldier and the South Korean Security Secretary is also interesting especially their friendship. This movie makes me think that division within a team could really cause chaos. Unity. The ruling government is very important to shape the people's mind.
Marriage Story (2019)
Changes how I view divorce
The love between Charlie and Nicole still remained even if they were going through divorce. They still showed acts of husband and wife unconsciously and it's sad to see how two people who still love each other have to divorce due to differing opinions. If only both sides could tolerate more, the marriage which still has love can go on.
Is this how modern marriage is? It just reminds me how important shared common values are in a marriage. As a 20 year old, it never occurred to me that people could divorce because of different goals and opinions and how divorced couples could still have love for each other.
Titanic (1997)
Beautiful love story amidst sinking ship
If there were more lifeboats, more lives could be saved. The number of lifeboats available (20) were only enough for about 50% of the people on board. 2200 people on board but 1500 died. Safety must be placed above aesthetics.
I m touched when Rose was willing to let go of Jack´s corpse which then sank to the bottom of the Atlantic. Remembering Jack telling her to never give up, she swam in the freezing water and blew the whistle. Jack's love gave her strength to live well.
Humans should not be overconfident of their abilities and creations. Titanic was claimed to be an unsinkable ship. 1000 people came to witness its maiden voyage. But it sank anyway.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Don't be fooled by the seemingly boring trailer
Ken Miles was way ahead of the others in the Le Mans car race. When he was ordered to slow down to get a three car photo finish with the other two Ford, he was willing to wait. He did not get champion technically. He was very hardworking but was willing to put aside his personal benefit and accomplishment to make everyone happy. Although he didn't win the race (although he deserved to since he built the car and drove really well) he thanked his friend for giving him a chance to participate in Le Mans.
I don't know how true this story is. Some say Miles slowed down as a protest to Ford, but the film seems to show otherwise. Anyway, it's a really interesting movie.
Move to Heaven (2021)
Interesting plot, but not appealing enough for me to binge-watch
I like how this drama explores different social issues- it makes me more aware of them. From the abandonment of old people, LGBT to problems with overseas adoption, I've gained different perspectives after watching this drama.
Lee Je-hoon's role is sexy, an outwardly cold man who is involved in illegal boxing, but has a soft side (though he likes to deny it). Tang Joon-sang plays his role well too. His acting as a mentally disabled kid seems natural. I enjoy watching the growth of the characters.
However, the pace is sometimes too slow for me. I don't have the urge to keep watching the drama. Maybe the genre is not my type. I even wonder why are there still so many episodes left. So if there are many episodes of this instead of only 10, I might gave up.
The White Tiger (2021)
Eye-opening and really interesting
It was so interesting I didn't wanna take my eyes off the screen. The male lead did a fantastic role in portraying someone from the lower caste through his expressions and conduct. I could feel how aggrieved and helpless he was and he even hated the fact that he was already used to being a servant. The Indian caste system is the prominent theme of this movie- how hard it was for the poor to reach the top. This movie shows how people lose their naivety and original pure intentions and change as they are slowly being 'moulded' by their environment.
Actually I do wonder why did Ashok wanna replace Balram with another driver? This happened right after he rebuked Balram for donating to the poor. This makes no sense to me. Ashok was a good guy who defended Balram and there was no way he would wanna fire Balram just for donating to the poor.
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Mysteriously beautiful
It is mysterious and I can feel the sadness due to choicelessness behind the conduct of a Geisha. I love the blue eyes and how beautiful the Japanese culture is through the depiction of women wearing kimonos and dancing. There was hardly a dull moment while watching this movie and I would not wanna skip any parts of it.
However, I would appreciate it if the pronunciation and the subtitles are clearer, as I can only understand the whole story after reading the plot.
Shaonian de ni (2019)
Educational- Effects of Bullying being highlighted
Finally understood why Qianxi received so much recognition after acting in this movie. His gaze and the tense in-between silence. Wow. Zhou Dong Yu's acting skills are so good as many of her lines are spoken through facial expressions, which made it difficult.
As I do not live in China, I have always thought that students in China studied tirelessly for the National College Entrance Examination in China. This movie simply reinforces my thought as I watch how pressured the students are and how 'big' this exam is in China. For example, there was even a mini opening session before the start of the exam in front of the school.
This movie sheds light on the consequences of bullying-such as revenge which might be murder. Alongside is some interesting bittersweet romance between the male and female lead.
Dou Luo Da Lu (2021)
Strong team spirit
When I first started watching the trailer I didn't think I would enjoy watching this fantasy drama with mystical special effects. It is not the same kind of special effects as the other Chinese ancient dramas. But the more I watched Douluo Continent, the better it got, the special effects were superb and the characters set up were quite thorough. Tang San and Xiao Wu are a bit lacking in terms of their relationship development because they've always been steadily sweet. In contrast, I found the couple of Dai Mu Bai and Zhu Zhu Qing to be very interesting.
My favourite part of the show is the seven team members-the feeling of fighting alongside your companions is just superb. I didn't feel that any actor was particularly good in this drama, but because everyone played their roles well, I thought it was quite good. This drama doesn't really go for the romance line but that team spirit is really lit! Looking forward to season 2!
You Fei (2020)
A must watch for Chinese romantic martial arts drama lovers
Zhao Li Ying's acting is very natural and I love her fighting scenes! Very cool.
I am a fan of Wang Yibo. At first, I was worried that the cold-hearted guy would not do well as Xie Yun. Although Yibo's acting is not as natural as Li Ying's, and some of his 'naughty moments' feel a little forced to me, I truly felt that he was spot on a lot of the time. Love how he teased Ah Fei.
If you like watching romantic martial arts dramas, you can't go wrong with Legend of Fei. It is cool, sweet and has many funny lines!
Chen qing ling (2019)
I wanna have a friend like that too
I never expected myself to love this drama so much. I have always thought that I would prefer romance over friendship drama, but The Untamed changed my perception. The strong and intense friendship between Wei Wu Xian and Lang Wang Ji is something quite impactful and makes me wonder if I could have a friend like that too. A friend who is capable, ready to help and go through hardships with me, even in the face of death.
I often laugh at the occasional funny elements of this series and I like how abundantly unique each character is protrayed. I love the strong family tie between Wei Wu Xian, Jiang Chen and Shijie. Jiang Chen always ends up caring for Wei Wu Xian no matter how angry he was at him; that's cute. I also like how close Wei Wu Xian and Shijie were- he kept wanting to be pampered by her.
This series accompanied through my sadness of not getting what I want even though I worked really hard for it. It keeps me distracted and engaged and I looked forward to end of each day because I get to watch 3 episodes of it.
Thank you to all the actors and actresses and the production team for making such an amazing drama!
Itaewon Keullasseu (2020)
A bit unrealistic
This drama revolves around Park Saeroyi, a guy who believes that he can do anything he wants and tries to beat Jangga Co. all the while sticking to his values of integrity. It made me question if there is anyone like him who falls and rises to work towards the same goal although it's pretty impossible to be achieved. I came to a conclusion that not everyone is as lucky as him. Anyway, it's good that Yi Seo and Saeroyi ended up together. Yi Seo worked so hard to make him successful and happy.
I feel touched to see Yi Seo giving Geun Soo a hug when he asked for a handshake during their farewell. He was very very faithful to her but she couldn't accept his feelings. I also feel sorry for Oh Soo Ah. I like her character in this drama because i can relate to it. She is an orphan so she has to work harder to live a comfortable life. She studied hard, received financial aid from Jangga Co. and worked for them. "I am an employee of Jangga Co. and I will always work for Jangga Co."She is a successful manager and I like how successful she is after working her way up. She is pretty and capable. I want to be that kind of woman. She waited over 10 years for Park Saeroyi but he fell for someone else instead. I like how she doesn't harbour ill feelings towards Yi Seo and wished the couple a happy life. After being the whistle blower, she did well in running her own pub and hired an attractive chef, something which comforts me.
The Social Dilemma (2020)
Awareness
Glad that Netflix decided to have open conversations about how social media is manipulating our minds and actions to gain profits. As the team behind all these apps work to engage users more in these platforms by using data to predict our behaviors, some actually feel guilty of it because of the consequences of social media addiction and propagation. This documentary made me more aware of using social media so that I can exercise more control over my usage. I myself experienced the feeling of comparison, loneliness and emptiness as I scroll mindlessly through the pages. I cannot wait to go travel again and make real connections with people or perhaps even pick up a new skill. Social media should be used as a powerful tool for us to improve ourselves and to make this world a better place!
