Black Books (2000–2004)
"I don't want to sell books because people read them and then bring them back, and we start all over again"
12 August 2001
Right now, I'm about to state a fact which may shock you to the depths of your soul, if you had watched any of the six genius episodes of Black Books. Here goes: Black Books was not watched by half the amount of people it should have been seen by, because Channel 4 (can you imagine, Channel 4 of all channels?) didn't give it enough hype. Yes, yes, I know. It is a travesty indeed. Because this is one of the funniest series in quite some time to come out of Britain (but of course, like many of the comedies these days in Britain, it needed an Irishman to get it off the ground - note my nationality, above). It made me laugh, it disgusted me, it made me laugh a lot more, I was repulsed by some horrific displays of delinquency (which made me laugh the most) and then it would end, making me beg for more of the same gruesome stuff next week. It's a great show: make an effort to see it. If anyone knows whether it'll make a comeback with another series I would be grateful to be informed. Just watch it. And laugh. And then wish you knew someone like that (which is both completely unlikely, and yet you MUST know someone that crazy) and go down to your local bookshop and try to heckle the owner into a state of bitter, pessimistic, and very amusing (for yourself) madness. Come to think of it, isn't his name Bernard too?

I may be biased, but in my humble opinion this is great!

Dear sirs,

I may be biased because I absolutely love Reeves and Mortimer (absolute geniuses, and I challenge anyone to contradict me!). This series is thoroughly enjoyable, and am delighted that it will soon be given a second run, and I'm always in stitches by the cameo appearances of Charlie Higson, Hitchcock-style, although not quite as hidden.

I'm not declaring it a perfect series, totally void of all annoyances (because, granted, Bob does look quite uncomfortable, and is evidently itching to start making an idiot of himself), however, it is very well written, even though I'm far too young to even know about the original series. The acting, I'm sure, will be improved upon in the second run, as this was their first proper go at something that needs, well, to be blunt, concentration, but it's all done with good humour and what I believe to be the pinnacle of great digital effects (or at least the pinnacle they could claim on their budget).

If you've never witnessed the first series, make some effort to watch the second, and if you don't have one smile in the entire episode, by all means, prove me wrong.
