The Batman (2022)
Highly overrated
High production value for a very soulless movie. Love Pattinson, but his Batman missed the mark. Too brooding; too lifeless. He could have done so much more with this role.
They clearly tried to make a Batman crossed with Seven and ended up with a mess.
Paul Dano was not a great Riddler. The plot seemed to be headed somewhere, but ended with a fizz instead of a bang. Gotham turning into a shallow water park was not a very evil plan. There was no attempt to make it look as grim as it should have been.
Batman's "sacrifice" of cutting the wire to save innocent people from electrocution... what was the point? Didn't work for me.
Not sure how others are rating this up there with the Nolan trilogy, but it doesn't hold a candle. Speaking of candles-most of the scenes in this movie were probably lit by a single candle. If you do watch this film, make sure your ambient lighting is nonexistent.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Easily in the top 3 of superhero films
Idris Elba is one of the finest actors of our generation; every scene he touches turns to gold. His hero's journey in this film was one worth taking. While he's a standout, the entire cast is fantastic-including John Cena. As a fan of John Cena, I've been very critical of his previous works; but, this was his foot in the door to big Hollywood roles. He did well.
The humor was excellent, for the most part. As expected, you're going to hear a few forced jokes, but the corny Marvel level of humor is successfully avoided. Some scenes absolutely had me in stitches without a word being spoken-and that's rare..
I'm going to watch this film twice in the same day. I don't recall the last time I did that. It must have been a Christopher Nolan film, and those are meant for re-watching. This film, however, was pure entertainment with heart.
A great watch you will enjoy, if you like R-rated fantasy/superhero/sci-fi films.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Flash takes command of this movie
Simply put: this iteration of Justice League is average, at best, until Flash (played by Ezra Miller) enters the screen.
The comedy, until Flash is introduced, feels forced -- similar to most of the Marvel movies. Luckily, Snyder almost solely uses him for the movie's comedic relief once he's recruited to the Justice League -- though, he's far more than comedic relief.
Miller's charisma absolutely pours onto the screen and keeps you locked in. The only two main characters, other than Flash, who draw me into this movie are Lois Lane and Superman (played by Amy Adams and Henry Cavill, respectively). Amy Adams doesn't get much screen time, but the Snyder Cut would suggest that she has a much larger role to play. The rest of the main cast give lackluster performances. Cyborg (played by Ray Fisher) gives a great performance, but does not quite have the command of attention like the aforementioned performers.
Snyder's version cuts a lot of the garbage from the first movie and adds a hefty amount of backstory. The four-hour duration of the movie is not a deterrent, especially if you haven't seen the first iteration of the film.
It is clear that Snyder's vision for Justice League is far superior to that of Joss Whedon (the writer of the first iteration of this film, who was hired because Snyder experienced a family tragedy and could not continue). Snyder teases with easter eggs throughout the movie and ends it with both an epic ending and pre-credits epilogue that demand sequels.
Far superior than the first, but not perfect -- Zack Snyder's Justice League is a welcome four-hour adventure.
