Shazam! (2019)
Can we get a score of 11 out of 10 here because this movie is not only a masterpiece, but also a life-changer
When i saw this when it came out in Italy (April 8th, 2019) with my father, we had a BLAST watching it!
Everything about Shazam! Is amazing:
Phenomenal acting and chemistry by everyone, Zachary Levi is the perfect casting choice for Billy Batson/Shazam!, nice direction, great visuals, amazing script with a lot of fun moments, great handling of sensitive topics like foster care & family and the list goes on...
This is, hands down, the best movie that the DCEU has put out and easily excited for the sequel in 2023.
About the inspiring part:
Before seeing the movie, i suffered from an awful depression because of my mother's disease which is very hard to diagnose.
I was stuck in a bed for 4 years crying and eating a lot and considering myself a pointless human being not knowing what to do.
After i saw the movie, that night i reflected a lot and actually said to myself "I've had enough! I need to change not only for myself, but for my family!"
I started going to therapy, helping people in need at church, going to the gym losing a lot of weight, aiding my parents with everything, meeting people who had become the best friends I've had in a long time and developing a passion for theater and film.
Probably they're not gonna watch this, but i want to say to all of the cast & crew of Shazam! Thank you so much for creating a fun and thoughtful movie that made me the person who i am today, and I'm forever grateful.
Sincerely
Giuseppe.
Lucy in the Sky (2019)
Not even the talents of Natalie Portman could save this mess
I truly wanted to love this movie, on the exterior it looked amazing, it had a promising plot, amazing actors and the creator of the Fargo tv series Noah Hawley on the director's chair.
What could possibly go wrong?
Interesting plot wasted on total boredom, pretty sure that they got some of the science wrong and despite some amazing acting from Natalie Portman, Ellen Burstyn, Jon Hamm, etc. And good cinematography, they couldn't unfortunately save this forgettable mess.
In short: An Oscar-bait movie that you will forget the day after.
Swept Away (2002)
This movie completely disrespected one of the greatest Italian movies of all time!
This is coming from a guy who 1. Is from Italy and 2. Highly consider the Lina Wertmüller Original to be a masterpiece with superb performances by Mariangela Melato and Giancarlo Giannini and the amazing commentary by the north and the south of Italy.
And, very unfortunately, we arrive at the 2002 version which is, in my opinion, THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
Problems:
1. They completely changed the story by taking away all the political subtext and adding unnecessary and offensive rape scenes that are pointless to the plot
2. Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone's acting is GOD-AWFUL! I've never seen a character this unlikable and unredeemable in a movie ever!
3. They turned Adriano Giannini into an empty shell of his father, no development whatsoever and turning him into a cartoon character
4. They wasted the beautiful isle of Sardinia, very horrible crime!
5. It's an obvious star vehicle for Madonna, since her husband at the time Guy Ritchie wrote and directed this stinker
Final verdict
This "Remake" should have never existed! AT ALL!
Madonna should stick to singing (I love her as a singer, she made songs that are truly amazing. As an actress though... except for Evíta, ABSOLUTELY NO!)
It truly deserved the 5 Razzies it "won"
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
It's not as bad as people make it out to be
I saw WW84 on AppleTV on April and i heard so many negative reviews about it.
After i watched it, i personally think that it's an enjoyable movie.
Sure, it has problems like the plot point of Chris Pine inhabiting an unconscious man (there was no reason to have it in the script) and doesn't reach at all the standards set by the masterpiece of 2017's Wonder Woman.
About the acting, i acknowledge that they're a bit off, there's this School Play feeling about it, and i mean that in the best way possible. Everyone is like "Wow! I'm in a movie! That's so cool!" Especially Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord (He sounded like he was having the time of his life making the movie).
Overall, it's an OK movie with nice and colorful effects (I personally think that the Cheetah effect is actually decent), full of throwback nostalgia of the 80s, some well shot action sequences and watchable chemistry moments (especially Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig).
WW84 is crazy as hell, but it's a one-of-a-kind crazy.
This is one of the those movies that you're gonna get into or you're not.
